Hello all - I'm hoping to find some assistance in tracking down an error. I am seeing "er 30" which google tells me is a "communications error." Unlike others, I can rarely get the assist or throttle to work at all. Sometimes if I turn on the system, quickly increase the assist a few levels, and wait after the er30 shows up, it will work until I interrupt the pedals and then no more.

I suspect either the battery or the crank sensor to be at fault.

Is it possible the battery could be causing this error? I am using a 48V20Ah Allcell lithium battery. Perhaps damaged BMS?

Apart from that, how can I check the crank sensor to see if it is functioning properly? It was working intermittently prior to getting this message 100% of the time, so maybe it finally failed totally.

This error refers to communication between the display and the controller. The battery almost certainly is not the problem. Probably not the crank sensor either, although who knows, you may have encountered something new here. But I'd focus on the display-controller connection. Start by checking all the connectors and making sure there are no bent pins or other obvious visual problems. If you have a continuity tester, check continuity in the cable. I don't have a pinout handy but just make sure that for every pin on the display side, there's a corresponding pin on the controller side. Try bending the cable near the connector as you do this to help detect intermittent connections.

What do you mean, "interrupt the pedals"? You start pedaling, it's working, then after you stop pedaling, it no longer works?

Exactly. It will only work once, but once anything changes (the pedals stop, the throttle is pressed, the assist level is changed) it will not work again until it is power cycled.

Well, that makes it sound less like a connection problem, and more like something is screwed up in the controller. I'd contact your vendor about a replacement - try to get it done under warranty, but you might have to suck it up and pay for it (~$100).

Pardon my inexperience, but the controller is the same thing as the LCD display, right? Would this be a suitable replacement? http://www.greenbikekit.com/bafang-8fun-motor-bbs-01-lcd-display.html

The controller is in the motor housing itself, so this should be a suitable replacement: http://em3ev.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=46&product_id=188

Looks like we're on the same boat. -> http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58898&p=962161#p962161
Have you found a viable solution to your problems?

Have you replaced the LCD display? Or the controller?
Did it help?

Hey, did you ever figure resolve your issue? I was having intermittent error 30s after about 5-10 miles of riding. PAS and throttle would work as expected until that point. Oddly, charging the battery seemed to temporarily resolve the issue a few times even though error 30 is not related to the battery. Maybe that moved the wires enough to get a better connection.
Howeber, now I can't get rid of the error no matter how many times I charge or disconnect and reconnect wires. Paul from em3ev suggested separating the communication wire from the power wire as it may have been creating some interference, but that didn't work either.

Any thoughts?
