BBS-FW: Open Source Firmware for BBSHD/BBS02 Controller

I have a BBS02 500w made in 2018 - there is a warning about instability for older BBS02 so a few quick questions:

-could i revert back to stock FW if it doesn't work/is not stable?
-are the default settings going to be better than the stock FW or do I need to fiddle with them using the config flie?
-anyone using an older BBS02 and have no stability issues?

1) No, the original Bafang fw is read protected, you cannot revert back. There are some BBS02 fw's kicking around on the net but I've yet to find one that works satisfactorily, most seem to have jerky throttle issues, etc.

2) I doubt that it will be ideal straight out of the box, you'll almost certainly need to tinker with the config to get things exactly as you want. Not hard to do, definitely worth getting familiar with this.

3) I've flashed a couple of older BBS02's with Daniel's fw, one worked just fine, the other was unable to detect battery voltage and always operated in LVC mode. More info on this further back in the thread. In the end I replaced the controller, this worked fine and gave me a shift sensor i/p which the old controller didn't have, but obviously there's a cost factor to this.

I'm always wary of saying 'definitely yes', but a new controller worked just fine for me and I haven't read of anybody having trouble flashing the o/s fw on a new controller. You'll be unlucky to actually need one but plenty still available on Aliexpress.

Just be sure to get the right type, the very early versions (pre 2015) had a slightly different controller case design and won't fit the later version BBS02 motors. Also be sure you order a UART controller, the latest Canbus controllers won't work with the o/s fw.
 
Hey yall, does anyone know if setting "sport mode" to headlight turns off the power to the headlight connector? I don't seem to be getting any power to it and I'm not sure if it's the firmware or if it's broken? Or if there's a setting I've overlooked.
I might switch to another means of activating it, my display dims when the headlight is on and it's not so great in the daytime.

Theres a setting to set what you want it to do... I've set mines to be always on regardless of the headlight setting on the display (which does the sport mode switching)
 
In the Config Tool.... Global Speed Limit Options... I'm trying to understand what this does and how the different settings (Disable, Enabled, Standard Levels) work. And does this then tie in with the following setting... Global Speed Limit (%).

Q1: is this FW working on 48V 1000W C769-51-501 (30A) controller ?
Q2: is the street legal configured and the off street toggled by enabling the light ?
Q3: is the throttle disabled on street legal and enabled on off street ?
 
A quick update: I flashed the controller with the firmware update posted by Tomblarom in this thread BBSHD Voltage Problem Firmware Update & Instructions and then edited the settings using the Luna Config Tool. Setting to 30A worked; the screen showed higher amps (30 vs. 28.5 with BBS-FW) and higher wattage (1550-1650, vs. 1400-1450 with BBS-FW) - subtle but noticeable on the hill near me that I tested on. So, it seems it is possible to push my controller & battery beyond 28.5A, and that the issue isn't the screen inaccurately reporting what the motor is drawing.

Best of both worlds for me would be be increased amps but with the BBS-FW programmer - the ability to switch between standard/sport is particularly useful. What's strange when flashing the BBS-FW is that everything else works; I can switch from standard to sport and can notice the difference in performance on the throttle, but it doesn't seem to register the increased amps (or increased voltage draw for the battery).

I noticed that the version and settings for the STC for the firmware update in the link above are slightly different to what's suggested for flashing the BBS-FW. The file in Tomblarom's link uses version 6.86 rather than 6.88, 18.432MHz rather than 20, and instructs to untick 'enable long power-on-reset latency'. I'm wondering whether flashing the BBS-FW using this version of the STC and these settings might overcome whatever issue is preventing the increased amps from registering with the BBS-FW? That way, I could increase the amps and use the BBS-FW programming tool.

The only thing that makes me slightly nervous is whether using alternative settings to those included in the instructions for flashing the BBS-FW carries any risk of bricking the controller?
Didn't notice any difference in hill climbing speed on 16% hills at 33A using samsung 50g 14s8p battery with 34 miliohm internal resistance with 130kg system weight except for change in the sound signature of bbshd motor. I guess to increase climbing speed safely either higher voltage or lower weight is necessary. Might go back to 28A since the change in motor noise signature introduces too much uncertainty for no benefit unlike what other users report.
 
Edit: Fixed by raising stop delay back up to 200ms.

Edit 2: Throttle became very jerky when I set 0 pedal assist + light button to activate sports mode on 0 assist mode. (0 assist sport mode was throttle all at 100%).
Throttle works perfectly on any normal modes when set to override cadence etc.


Hello all,
Ive successfully flashed the firmware but have a strange issue. None of the pedal assist kick in until around 9-10 mph no matter what level pedal assist or speed settings. Pedal delay is set to the lowest at 15 degrees of I remember rightly.
I've been advised by a couple of people re re-flash again, has anyone heard of anything like this happening?
