Best Self-Defense for a Lady on an eBike?

There's a lot of news recently about women assaulted while jogging which seems to carry similar concern as the OP. A couple joggers murdered out here on the east coast and that recent story developing about the mom apparently kidnapped for 3 weeks in northern CA?

An eBike can probably outrun a threatening situation but it would depend on many factors.

Damn it sucks women are so preyed upon in our society...

Doesn't matter what the gender is; a couple weeks back, just walking from the store, Raine was assaulted with a broken beer bottle thrown from a car at his head, which aside from the split skin and concussion, the new fear every time a car goes by, or people laugh loudly anywhere nearby, etc., adds to all the other stresses already there. :(

The ER people blamed him for the attack, and there was no point in calling the police (as they won't do anything but blame him, too, and harrass him for being a victim; as in previous cases, like with my mugging over a decade ago).

My short wife has been assaulted 3 times that I know about. I tried to get her to carry her house keys sticking out between her fingers, as she walks about. She could easily put out an eye if not other damage, but, having her shoulder disconnected was not serious enough for her to think about fighting back.

One night before we were married, we were walking to her son's house, when we passed by a bar. A guy was hanging in the doorway and fell in behind us as we passed. 2 blocks further, I took a left turn and waited for him. As he turned the corner and saw me ready to take him out, he left in the other direction very quickly.

Wife couldn't imagine why I pushed her to turn that corner. She never pays attention. I bought her a 25000v stun gun, but, she doesn't want to hurt anyone. :roll: Just flashing it and pressing the button will throw a nice blue spark/arc. :twisted: :twisted:

You live in California, people in California have given up their basic civil rights, the civil rights of Americans. That is a serious problem for Californians, but it is the choice of Californians.

Have your local law enforcement remove the questionable and homeless people from the trail and from your area and from your state. If this is not possible under California law, then simply vote out your politicians and vote in smarter people, people who will restore your basic civil rights.

Do not pay any attention to negative comments from Canadians, with respect to self protection. Canadians know the value of their own lives, and know it is lower than the rights of criminals. Canada does not have a bill of rights.

Mike, the US census numbers on crime are pretty interesting.
Per most recent census, violent crime rates per 100,000 people:
California = 473
Texas = 491
Property crime rate per 100,000 people:
California = 2728
Texas = 4017

I wish there were a simple answer to removing thuggery from the streets of US, but I don't think there is. Clearly neither California nor Texas has figured out the right answer yet.

Don't know about crime rates in Canada but I've heard they may be lower than most of US.

California is considered to have a high incidence of "Dark Figure" crime. (I believe that is even a proper term.) If a woman is raped but doesn't report it, while there's an unspecified ratio of false rape complaints, you have unreported crime both in the real rapes and in the false reports, but you never know the real story. I had a bike stolen I did not report because there was no point, other things are occasionally taken from my yard. The real story is a dark figure. Not only are we joking 'Its halfway to Mexico by now, even the illegals are not reporting when they're victims of other illegals.

Other things I don't report include the NOT an old girlfriend that tries to run me down from time to time, because they'll act like I'm some crank trying to get back at her, that I deserve to have her doing this as though I did something rather than her being a borderline personality trying to blame me because she made herself miserable, etc. I think in a small town it would be more effective to report it because they'd go talk to the woman. Here nothing would happen until I was under the car. A much larger percentage of Texans live in small towns than Californians.

Law enforcement is minimally effective. Mainly because they willfully remain in the dark.

Oh, has anyone mentioned what an effective self defense weapon a bike itself is? When I was in grade school I fought off a doberman that outweighed me by hitting it with the bike it knocked me off of.

We don't?

Also:

Historically, the violent crime rate in Canada is far lower than that of the U.S. and this continues to be the case. For example, in 2000 the United States' rate for robberies was 65 percent higher, its rate for aggravated assault was more than double, and its murder rate was triple that of Canada. However, the rate of some property crime types is lower in the U.S. than in Canada. For example, in 2006, the rates of vehicle theft were 22% higher in Canada than in the US

You guys don't seem to be doing a very good job keeping each other safe at all. All those prisons and guns, you shouldn't have to worry about anything right?

We do have the greatest higher education system for predators in the world. Bust em for a bit of weed, or a burglary, and send em to predator college. All good if the prison corp makes a profit.

How you get a decent person to run for office beats me.

I can't believe a Canadian/US feud is in the works, WTF? Keep it on subject, the OP requested some ideas, moving to Canada is apparently not one of them, with all due respect to our northern brothers and sisters. Maybe I'm just sick of political discussion.

On a lighter note... how cyclists can respond to being hassled by jerks isn't a brand new issue.
"Back at the turn of the century, the bicycle was one of the hottest non-horse-powered modes of transportation available. It was also affecting all aspects of city-living, including dealing with crime. Thankfully, in 1901, Pearson's Magazine ran an illustrated feature on how to use your bike to fend off attackers." Includes several useful techniques for both sexes, including "Ride boldly up to your assailant’s side, leap bravely from your machine full upon him." :lol:

She's in more trouble riding her bike down by Newport Beach pier and running into some drunk meth head down there then on the River Trail.

California has spent the past several years taking up a whole new plan: Letting them all go. . . .

Wear jacket having bare wires running along one's lower forearms and wrists (where an assailant might grab during a scuffle) energized by a cattle prod.

Yep as stated, a bunch of men not knowing how to keep a woman safe. Well, I probably fall into that category as well, but here is my take on this thread....

First and foremost, if it is bad along that trail, don't use it. Go a different direction.
Get her to shop with a friend. Women in general don't take isolation well. During the hunter/gatherer days of mankind, the women folk were rarely isolated. They were always around other women during day time activities. They have the same needs today and for protection they should travel in pairs or groups.

I used to practice a lot of judo back in the day and won my share of contests. My favorite moves would be to jump or climb on a mans chest and stand him on his head. It is a move that even the small women in my dojo could do.
There is nothing quite like the dull-gong-like sound when the top of a mans head slams onto the cement sidewalk.

If you find her a good judo instructor that understands this, then take the opertunity to study with that instructor until your wife is comfortable with the techniques.

Yawara List.jpg

She will probably what you with her so you should learn the techniques as well. You can practice together.

Also ask about Dakikubi Jime - Flying headlock throw.
And how to use her legs to scissor a mans ribs and break them if the situation is dire and he has her on the ground with her legs spread.

A Yawara stick as a keychain is useful. Not for punching with it as women just don't have knockout power like a man does, but they can be used for pressure point work. Like the pressure point on the inside of your earlobe. If you want get a man to stand to attention use a Yawara stick or something similar and grab their earlobe in a way that you are pressing it to the nerve on the inside of the ear lobe. You will get him to jump.

All these things can be done by a small woman.

:D

Your woman just looks too good maybe the approach is Degreaser up and make it look a little more homeless don't take so many baths no perfume ditch the makeup inappropriate Aroma could just scare him off. A perfume like Fifi lepew

The SAW and RPG launcher are good deterrents, but honestly, how often would you really get to use them? Not exactly legal in California either.

I seem to run across some really sketchy looking homeless characters pretty often, especially on the wooded trails. A 3000W motor is my defense. I can outrun any of them.

In Calgary, AB they have a bylaw team called Encampment where they break the camps up and try to find an alternative, I had typed treatment but they just give em #'s to call, leave it up to the bums poragative. Here we basically literally warehouse them either in the Foothills industrial park, an old electrical building at Crowchild/Memorial Drive, or downtown (Salvation Army, D.I.) but there are always the type of bum that does their own thing, stealth camping in city parks, I talk to one bum who sleeps in a shed behind a mini strip mall, I've been trying to find him lately to give him my old backpack (since last time I saw him he had a laptop type bag) and some nice leather gloves I found on transit. He maybe dead or moved onto warmer weather in BC. Never had any issue's with any homeless people, its usually the cracked up junkies like one dude near Justins new place at Oppenheimer park.

For the ladies, that picture of the encampment would scare many off. You just gotta carry yourself like you are in charge even if you are scared, and find solace in your mace, gps panic button, I doubt a whistle would do much help, but I've seen them in Vancouvers downtowns sketchy area, and as for a weapon I think an easily accessed large U-Lock would work but you gotta know how to use it one correct blow a kneecap or the head would suffice. Better is a legal carry of a firearm.

ME
Just need some lunch & beer money. I got a 7000 watt 20ah and I sharpen my tire pump on one end. Just give me a call. 6'4" 235lb. ugly with cellphone and gps.
