Bicycle Recommendation

Think that a good doctor would measure and not ask patient what is his height? Will measure guy's height and distance from broom handle below his balls to floor.
Pedal Bicycle Guy shrunk or lied when he got driver license. 5 foot, 9.5 inches tall. 30 inches from balls to floor. Measurements taken with no shoes.

That is the step thru/ladies version. There is a step over version that would be better for a heavyweight.

Color? Seeing no words? Look at the picture stupid.

Won't take long for Pedal Bicycle Guy to get his pants caught in the chain. I put a rubber band on my pants.

Starting to get pissed at the bike situation

I was browsing Google searching for advice on affordable fixies

There's your problem. You you were feeling profoundly, slobberingly retarded; you threw yourself into a nest of random slobbering retards, and you got some on you. No surprise there.

Fixed gearing is a drivetrain, not a bike. If you want a good fixed gear bike, cheap, then get a good cheap used bike with horizontal dropouts and add a fixed gear rear wheel. That approach can land you an actually OK fix for the price of a sucker-born-every-minute crapheap from a nameless eBay seller. Or go ahead and continue hunting online for "affordable fixies" and continue to get retard slobber on you.

All the bikesdirect.com fixies I have worked on (Mercier, Windsor, Vilano, etc.) have sucked. All the no-name eBay fixies I have worked on, and the State bikes, Republic bikes, what have you, have sucked even more-- which is remarkable. And though they require more care and diligence than real bicycles, they inevitably get less. I can't tell you how many times I've had a cheap me-too fix in my shop that was missing two or more chainring bolts out of five. Heck, most of them never even get lubricant or air until they stop going.

It was at least five years ago when I noticed that fixies had already jumped the shark so badly that there were high schoolers and balding fortysomething dudes coming in asking for them, usually not knowing what fixed gearing meant. In my neck of the woods, most of the chump market for fixed gears has moved on to something else (be it more functional bicycles, hardtail chopper motorcycles, or beards so long that they preclude riding anything with an open chain drive), leaving committed hipsters and bike polo players in charge of the category.

EDIT:

P.S. - High tensile steel frames are typically not made to a weaker spec than chromoly steel frames. The manufacturer-- even a rinky-dink online seller-- doesn't want to get sued by people who got hurt when their bike folded up underneath them. They just use more steel if the steel is weaker. I do the same thing when I'm building frames from scratch. The weaker the material I'm using, the more of it I use.

So that means a hi-ten frame will be heavier and usually stiffer than a chromoly frame. Unless it's built with genuine incompetence and/or callous indifference (e.g. Walmart bikes), it will probably be less likely to fail than a lighter frame made of better material.

Think if you read between the lines? Chalo really does like fixies? He just don't like the people who buy them.

Was driving with a friend. Political science professor. Can't remember who was driving? Saw this car in front of us.

I said. Hate that car. Political science professor guy said. Think you hate the person who bought that car. He was right.

Thinking about buying. State Bicycle, Core-Line

30 inches from balls to floor

So 31" with shoes.

I don't do mm, cm.

Extra Small (46 cm- Riders 5'0"-5'4")
Small (50 cm- Riders 5;4"-5'7")
Medium (54 cm- 5'7"-5'11")
Large (58 cm- 5'11-6'2")

STANDOVER HEIGHT
733mm = 29"
751mm = 29.5"
775mm = 30.5"
811mm = 32"

Would Small 50 cm be good for Pedal Bicycle Guy?

Between a small and a medium. Depends on the geometry of the frame. It would be best to try a test ride. You can adjust the fit some by changing things like the bars, stem, and seat post.

Probably the perfect bike for the old guy would be a 26" with the 3-speed internal hub gears, but they don't make them anymore. They make some hubs, but I can't see a full sized bike off the shelf with them in it.

Might be going through a [No want gears] phase? Might be having PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from removing chain and derailleur from Pedal Bicycle Guy's bike. Why do we all have gears on our bicycles and automatic transmissions in our cars?

Yes I have driven manual transmission cars and trucks. For $1000 more, I buy automatic transmission. Like to eat and drive.

Can I buy a pedal bicycle with a automatic transmission?

Shimano Coasting was a parts group with an automatically 3 speed coaster brake hub whose shifting was powered by a front hub dynamo. I do not think it was available for very long, but I bet you can find a bike that has it if you look.

The problem with Shimano Coasting was that it was in response to focus groups of people who do not ride bikes and addressing the things they brought up as reasons for not cycling. But the real reason is that they are lazy cowardly useless adult infants, so fixing the issues they use as excuses does not convince them to ride.

The Ford Model T is an automobile that was produced by the Ford Motor Company from October 1, 1908, to May 26, 1927.[17] It is generally regarded as the first mass-affordable automobile,

The first mass-produced automatic transmission is the General Motors Hydramatic four-speed hydraulic automatic, which was introduced in 1939

If there were forums in the 1940's would people write:

The problem with automatic transmission's was that they were developed in response to focus groups of people who ride horses and addressing the things they brought up as reasons for not driving. But the real reason is that they are lazy cowardly useless adult infants like me who don't want to shift gears, so fixing the issues they use as excuses does not convince them to drive.

I would like to hellp make a bicycle recommendation but unfortunatelly have lost track of the specifics. Can you please recap the particulars? IIRC, the rider is somehow mentally diminished?

If I had more money I would hire all of Elon Musk's rocket scientists to build me a pedal bike that shifts automatically.
You are way overthinking it Marty. With a three speed IGH you can shift while you are not pedaling. Stopped at the light and want an easy take off? Just shift it down one gear with your thumb and push it back once you are up to speed. See a hill in front of you? Just shift it down again with your thumb.

If you were really too lazy to shift gears, you would put a hub motor on the bike.

Yes Pedal Bicycle Guy is probably not the best at figuring out best gear to be in when brain is overloaded by 21, 27, 36, or however many gears are on a bicycle.

Looking for bicycle recommendation for a guy. 5 foot, 9.5 inch tall. 250 pounds. He is not the sharpest tool in the shed. 4 miles from his house to work. No hills. He has a Trek pedal bike that seems too small for him. Something has gone horribly wrong with the rear derailleur. If I took a picture of rear derailleur it would cause all you to become traumatized and have nightmares for the rest of your life. Bent, two gears broke. Chain destroyed. I asked how did this happen? Guy said "When I break something. I REALLY break it". Front derailleur also showing signs of chain rubbing for a few thousand miles.

This guy is 50 something years old and has never owed a car. He does have a driver license and is excellent driver. I would imagine if he did have a car. Some transmission rebuilder would say - how did you destroy these gears? Guy would say - "When I break something. I REALLY break it"

Thanks all for helping a guy transport himself 4 miles. He is walking now.

Agree that Electric bike is wonderful way to eliminate 99.9% of gear shifting. But Pedal Bicycle Guy has been peddling a bike for 50 some years. He wants to pedal.

There is no figuring. That's high-middle-low range with seven eight or nine (ten eleven twelve) gears in each range. If you can not get that, that is on you.

OK, then how about a simplified single front chainring and wide range rear cogs/rear derailleur? What is the terrain like? Any notable hills?

OK, I'd be looking at the local online classifieds for a used Trek 720 or 920 in decent condition. Rugged simple early generation MTB with IIRC 7-speed rear. To simplify further remove the front derailleur so he only has to deal with the 7-speed shifting.

Want new. Frame color is important because I am weird.
