Can someone suggest a wired thermometer to add to my x5?

While my x5 is open I might as well put a thermometer in it. Can you suggest one? Ideally from Amazon (free shipping). Or available from major box stores or Fry's.

Priorities would be accuracy and size. Preferably with a repeated "beep" at a set temperature.

I bought a couple of these. I know that they are accurate to at least 110C

This might be another one worth trying.

Thanks for pointing these out Nicobie,

However, the first one only goes up to 70 C (158 F) and the second one can go to 150 C but has a plastic sensor that seems likely to melt at higher temps! I picked up a digital thermometer from Ikea called "Fantast" but haven't tried installing it yet.

It goes to 288 F and is made of stainless steel with a SS sensor. The probe needs to be modified to remove the L bend and to make it smaller.

Not certain, but it should be near the tip. I will probably just trim off the L and see how far the cable goes. I drive by an Ikea every day so won't worry Bout buying a backup.

This might be a good project for Irene! I'll take photos if I do.

Where exactly is the sensor on these? Can I just chop off the L part on the Ikea one? Should I buy 2 to dissect one?

I just ordered this one. It is a fairly small size if you wanna keep your bike clean and uncluttered looking. Only drawback is that there is no temperature alarm but Im fine with that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005254TAK

I noticed that when ordering, but thought I'd take a chance anyway.

The highest reading I've gotten so far is 112C (233F). It's accurate +/- 2* when compared with my IR thermometer directly on the windings of my motor through the drilled out side cover.

Best $2.68 I've spent on the bike yet.

How are you planning to install it with the big metal probe? How do you plan on reducing it just to its sensor?

Actually, for all of you, do you just stick the entire probe in the motor as is? Where do you put it? How do you adhere it?

It would seem that once you get a good probe, you could mix and match display units as you like since they all appear to use the same 1/8" jack. True?

I tried that. I added resistors until both units showed the same room temp., but when heated it displayed the wrong temp.

However other units might be different...

I took the Ikea Fantast apart today. Couldn't be easier. The L shaped metal probe is crimped so that the thermo/wire stays in place. I used a big pair of pliers and simply squeezed the crimp until it expanded open. You can then easily slip out the thermometer sensor out of the stainless steel probe. There is no glue or adhesive holding the sensor in place.

The temperature sensor is actually just the wire. I guess it just picks up on the hottest section and reports that as the probe temp. There is a very small exposed section near the end with a small brass colored bit, but I don't think that would be the sensor.

The display is also perfect for an ebike. It has a Celsius/Fahrenheit button. You set the alarm beeper with the up button and down buttons. The max temp is 266 degrees F or 130 degrees C. The beep is pretty loud in a quiet room but probably won't cut it when you're riding.

The back has a pull-out U shaped metal stand and also a magnet embedded so you can mount it to your oven! :p

The connector to the meter is a simple jack and should be easy to extend with an extender. I need to find out what size it is, but it looks like a typical headphone sized mini-jack except that it's mono.

It looks like it would be easy to attach the temp sensor to the inside of your motor. I would imagine some silicone sealant would do the trick. You can even attach the sensor to a fairly long area since the sensor is long. It should also be very heat tolerant since it's designed to go in an oven.

All-in-all, it's a great little thermometer that looks perfect for use as a remote temp sensor.

These look alright. Nice and small. I'm sure you could adapt the screw type sensor somehow to fit in the motor somewhere.

Great find Ambrose, real cheap as well.

Apart from the case, this thermometer looks identical to the one me, doctorbass and other canadian ebikers are using (sold in Canadian Tire stores):

One important thing to watch out for is the annoying "auto shut-off". Many BBQ thermometers have that and will shut off after 10-15 minutes. Fortunately, the Canadian Tire (and hopefully the IKEA) doesn't have a shut off, its always on.

Hi Ryan,

many people like Doctorbass, El_Steak and me used this BBQ Thermometer from Maverick (ET-808) :

http://www.partshelf.com/maverick-et-808.html not the cheapest but not that bad at this price

Works fine and beeps at the preset temperature of your choice, good day!

No problem here. The IKEA Fantast thermometer stays on all the time.
