Is this a new thing or have they been around for awhile? It would make a really cheap and easy way to make a car electric.

yeah, easy way to make a car that's not as good as it could be.
Unsprung weight - in hub you can't get away from it (in spite of what all the vendors of such things would profess)
The biggest laugh was the crew (forget who) who said you'd save it back by using electric braking instead of a caliper.... like that could possibly ever be a good idea...!!!

The biggest problem is finding one (commercially available) that works effectively ( torque, and speed range), and a control system to support them ( multi motor controller ?).
Several of the big auto makers have built test vehicles (Mercedes, Ford, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Honda etc), ..but none have made it past prototype/ test phase. ...why ?
