Custom Giant Dh, Lightning Rods Big Block, Nuvinci N171

That's awesome. What's the plan for the battery? Have you got the internal dimensions?

What's the frame weight relative to starting point? What's the projected rake with the 200mm forks?

Apologies for the flurry of questions, just excited!

Battery plans are 18s and either 32 ah or 48 ah as it will hold 9 of the Multistar 6s 16ah packs.
The rake angle has been reduced by a couple of degrees while frame was being chopped and 3" was added to the wheelbase.
I should have some turning ability at low speed on level ground now as a standard dh frame has a very slack head angle.
The front section of bike now weighs 6.5 kg i am not sure of original weight.
Bet your not as excited i am waiting for this to be posted to me.

Any updates? Looking forward to see the drivetrain in action :D

Not as yet, just found out that customs sent my N171 hub back to sender because they think it is worth more than stated and we did not lie about price on the customs declaration.

That's a weird thing to do! How can they just send it back? Here they would contact the receiver and ask for a proof (ebay link etc..)
It was a private sale and we have no receipt for it, basically they do what they want.

Well its here and its awesome.
Got stuffed as per by customs with the usual add the postage to the cost, then pretend it is GBP then lose your dropouts and send you a bill type thing.

First thing i mocked it up with a few random bike bits to see how it sits and so i could flip it upside down to see if the motor fits as the welder only had some very rough measurements to work with as i had placed it on and it did not look promising as the primary was rubbing on the frame and ther was quite a gap above the motor.

Took off lower sheets and chopped the end off and repositioned the sheets and motor then welded them up.
Now i have no lower adj. on the kit and may need a chain idler on the secondary.

Had a few issues with spoke nipples biting into rim so washers and copious amounts of lube were added and all was well.
Tyre still looks small in the Monster T forks

wow awesome custom build.

It will be interesting to see how this build compared to your first AFT 1680w DH comp build. This will have a lot more power but also this bike I am guessing will be a lot heavier ? so it will be interesting to compare real world power to weight performance , speed and efficiency in wh/km.

keep us up to date what the final weight and power is compared to your first build.

Whoa.
Love the look mate.

Hi JK1 , bike 1 is a trek remedy and yes this one will be a lot heavier.
I reckon it will be around the 100 pound mark when done.

I got my kiwi style dropouts today from Sam Dekok because the Nuvinci is a bolt on not a bolt through and my rear end is a 150mm but the Nuvinci is 135mm so some spacing and wheel dishing to be done.
Will be having fun with my metal jigsaw puzzle later

Can the N171 handle 3kw?
The N171 is rated at 5kw continuous.

Wow, 5KW! I have been trying to find some more info on this as I was considering an Alfine 8 for a Luna but this seems to be the better way to go if it can handle 5KW. Is that a Fallbrook rating or someone else on ES?

Looking more into this now! I think the luna has 150mm dropouts so I am interested in how the extension is made with the "jigsaw puzzle of parts."

Hi Mammalian ,
The 5kw cont. is a fallbrook rating.
As i expected the jigsaw puzzle has been fun to say the least.
Nowhere near as simple as i wanted.
The gear shifter for the nuvinci screws in the end of the hub so the dropout has to be the correct thickness and have enough space around it to fit the shifting assembly.
I do have 2 rear wheel options for this ( nuvinci or a custom cassette on a Chris King hub) so which ever wheel is built first will be going on.
Most of the parts have arrived now so i can start putting it together very soon.

Sounds like a mess to sort out but isn't it always! Looking forward to how it comes out. It would be cool if the Nuvinci works out. Somewhat unique amongst ES builds.

Nice job!

Would be heavy, I am building ebike under 20kg and 750W.

I took a gamble and ordered the N171 for my Luna with 150mm dropouts. I am not sure what will be necessary to make it work but I'll keep an eye out here in case you get sorted first.
