Hey folks,
New here long time ebike diyer. Twice! when I updated the firmware on my cyc photon gen 1 motor through their app it bricked the display and thus the motor was useless. Am I alone?
The first time was when the motor was brand new and I did my first update several miles from home
. The second time happened in the summerish of 2025. The first time I had to swap out the controller and the second time I had to swap the controller 2x and the display*. CYC never provided an explanation or apology.

While I appreciate that cyc sent me a new controllers and display after the warranty expired, the whole process was pulling teeth and caused by a firmware update. Neither Golden Motor nor CYC were particularly willing to explain anything beyond we are sending you a new controller. I get the feeling in how quickly they sent the controllers and display without any questions to me that this was a known issue. But I cannot find anyone else having those issues.
*The second time it happened they first sent me a new controller. After the huge hassle of completely removing the motor, replacing the controller, and then re-inserting the motor, when I turned it on I got the same error!!! When I wrote to CYC all they said is they would send me another controller and a new display. Yay! I got to do the whole process again. See below for all the required tools.
