I am researching a geared BMC V1 motor right now and I was hoping someone here could give me a review of it. Since I am thinking a geared motor is best for my 700c bike I am wondering what you guys have to say about it. I think the websites are saying the top speed is about 22mph which is fine with me. I am looking for torque and efficiency. Is this a noisy motor?

Thanks for your help.

danh1970,
I had 2 of them. One was noiser than the other so I sold it. The one I have is on my wifes raighly 700 wheel with a 36v 10a fox pack. Top speed is about 21 unassisted and more if you help it. It is pretty good on power and not too bad on amp draw. Sorry to say but not a big fan of the BMC V1 maybe the v2 but not V1.

Thanks for your input. Does anyone have recommendations for a geared front hub motor for a 700c bike?

Yeah how about the Puma motor. They are a very similar motor to the BMC and if you have a look in the for sale section they are available at a good price.

I owned one for a couple of weeks. Had to return it, as the clutch was bad in it. The amps I want to run are at the top of it's reasonable power limit. So, I paid the difference and upgraded to the V2. I'd rather be in the middle of the spec than at the top edge. I wouldn't judge the reliability of this motor by the fact I had a bad one. That happens to all of them. From what I can tell reading ES, it is considered a good brand and reliable motor.

As far as your concern about noise, I found it no more noticeable than the growling my DD motor does under load. If you're trying to slip past a sleeping Doberman, you're probably not going to make it. Riding past another biker, if they notice at all, they may think you need to have your bearings checked --- they're making a weird noise. :)

Search this site for 'bpm' or 'bafang bpm'. I have one. It is a geared BMC sized motor. I really like mine. It is very quiet, runs about 18mph at 36v, and 24mph at 48v. I don't think it is breaking a sweat at these sort of speeds with modest batteries. You'll find 3 or 4 people posting positive reports. No one seems to have pushed the BPM to its limits, but it doesn't sound like that is what you are looking for.

The best part, is it is around $110 at BMSBattery.com (or maybe the sister site ecitypower.com). Shipping from China is expensive, but if you buy a few other things at the same time, it is not so bad. i just checked the referenced websites and neither of them seem to be working properly.

ES member cell_man may have another line on these motors and personally sells Pumas if I'm not mistaken. The Pumas are apparently closely releated to BMCs.

Good luck!

Holmes Hobbies has Bafangs and Puma and he can build killer wheels for them at what seem to me to be reasonable prices.

Lots of people with 700c bikes like bafangs. Light , not real noisy, just a little buzzing sound. They tend to run on 15 amp controllers that make it possilbe to use a smaller, lighter battery.

The rest of us, we use heavy 26" bikes, and load em up with batteries to run watt hog motors.
