E-Trike Project

Well... i thought some that have followed this build and contributed to it over recent months might like to see a lil video of my trikes firts run... BIG thanks to Matt (1000watt) for the SLA batteries, shall do me over until Lifepo4s find there way to me ;)

The video is shot from leaving my garage and a lil run around my block, the first half is all up hill, the only flat road in this video contains the two round abouts and down hill section...Sorry no watts up connected as yet (i have one and will be hooking it up tomorrow...also no speedometer :-( ) Matt did advise me these batteries from new weren't the best but i think they did admirably for my initial run on the trike...I also shall upload some detailed pics of the brake hook up and electrics lil later...

Big thanks to those on the forum that have given me input on this build, it is much appreciated and wont be forgotten :)

Regards

Kim

Thanks for the vid Kim!
Seems to go quite well, plenty fast enough. Will be faster with LiFePo4's!
I hope all that squealing in the vid was the wind in the mic, or was it you squealing with delight? ;)

Well done, Kim :D

We want a video showing you riding it, too, though...... :)

Yeah for sure Miles ;) I'll try to get a mate round and we can set the camera up in his car and
follow me ;)

Any pics showing the motor mounted, foot pegs, temporary batteries mounted,
etc? Does look like fun :D

Or have I missed a post?

No matey you didnt miss anything, the video i took yesterday zapped the cameras
batteries so i charged them last night and took some pics this morning of the fully assembled trike :)

Ahh, basking in the glow of a maiden voyage.

Indeed i am SIR hehehe couldn't get the grin off my face for hours ;) Must say though i cant
see me pulling it down for at least a few weeks ... have to give it a good testing you know LoL...
Decided i will get the lot powder coated too, will chrome half the forks... I also need more wire to
tidy the batter leads up and the motor lead for that matter, i only had wire here from an old scooter
so had to make do... will pass the throttle cable through the frame and run the aforementioned
motor and battery leads along the frame through sections of tube ill weld in place.... for now though
it works just looks a lil untidy.

Anywayz...thats it for now ... thanks for looking guyz...

Nice one Kim, looks a lot faster than I initially expected. Benefits of using the geared system I suppose, especially with all the hills.
I can't wait to see that thing up at the pub.

My only gripe from a personal "design" perspective is I would have liked to see the bike a bit more compact. I'm sure you aren't finished yet and it's hard to put up a ongoing project and then have to put up with every yokels opinion.
Oh and it needs more duct tape.

:D

Cheers mate...I actually picked up a speedometer late this arvo itching to get out tomorrow morning for a ride to see how fast she goes...

Will need me some lifepo4s before i tackle the pub on the the trike thats for sure ;) I flattened the batteries this morning in under 2kms the hillz kill the tired 'ol SLAs im afraid...still i get to have a lil fun so i no complain.. I think once its tidied up a bit, smaller batteries ali tray powdercoat & chrome it will look a lil nicer too...

Where boutz are you in Perth?

Ah good ! The return of the master! Couple a questions. Doesnt it hurt to sit on that charger? And ya really gotta be more careful riding on the wrong side of the road~ Welcome back! That thing really looks awful fast for a regular type tryke!
Good you are back! Dont they have anyone else living there? You were just about the only thing on the road!

Always nice to see how everything goes together. Looks like a fun ride :D

The extra work to make the forks was really worth it IMO.

haha silly bugger :p Matt actually lent me that charger its 48volt 8amp number charges/destroys the slas beauuutifully hahaha..

Your actually the second person that's mentioned that Doc..(fella on another forum bought it up also) I'll give you the answer i gave him "we drive on the left side which is right you drive on the right which is wrong" :p The history behind driving on the left and right is interesting Americans and their need for BIG wagons with no seats.. :: shakes head:: how uncouth ... :p :p :p meh Us Aussies are descendants from convicts who am i to judge LMAO..

Yeah it goes good in a straight line and surprisingly not to bad around corners once you get a lil body weight movement happening on the inside(of which i have alot LoL) the extra length and head rake contributes to the cornering over you run-of the-mill delta trike ;) ...still pretty easy to spin the rear drive wheel on right handers though LoL..

Shall be back in awhile with update of exact speed just waiting till after 9am then all the kiddies will be in school and there will be no traffic, the road with the round-a-bout has Mazenod College on it (my old school) don't particularly want to be dodging cars when i'm flat out LoL...

voicecoils Yeah i think the forks add to the overall look nicely...i will have the springer tube/springs/rocker plates chromed, the fork tube will be powdercoated to match the frame ...should look neat i think ;)

So...i went for a run to test speeds now i have speedometer. all excited batteries charged i hit 40km on the uphill section, i gets to the left corner onto the flat road get up to 46 change gear and PoP goes the drive chain of the motor BAH i thought i can coast to the bottom of my road and then ill pop it back on WRONG the chain fell completely off this time!@#!W@$!! i spent 10 minutes pushing the trike backwards up my road, got half way there and a lil old lady walking by went and grabbed my wheelchair from my garage...I then spent 5 minutes pushing up the hill i had just come down to retrieve the chain ...im f****d now i gives you the tip ... lesson learn t...chain alignment MUST be spot on and a chain tensionor will be required... the chain has stretched a lil since the weekend runs and the 'jolt' of the gear change is throwing it off im guessing... On a positive note im RAPT big time at the 40km/hr uphill... Will do 60 easy in top gear on the flat im sure... Back lil later in the day...

I knocked up a chain tensioner to keep the chain in place...once bitten twice shy ;) I scoured
my pile of donor bikes and chose the lever brakes from a BMX bike, they also match the color
of the stem and pegs :) Using the ali brakes and a gutted cog from a derailleur i came up with this-->
chain_tensioner.jpg

Applies nice tension to the chain hopefully will keep it on during the gear changes ;)

ALSO1 I snapped some pics yestrday of my new helmet and speedometer-->

new_helmet%20&%20speedometer.jpg

Nothing too flash but will keep the law off my back, it is compulsory to wear helmets when riding
bicycles here in Australia...The speedo is a 69 dollar wireless job shall get some close ups of it
on the bike laterz...still need to fit the watts up meter, i am waiting on some wire to be delivered
from my electrician friend, i want to make a lil 'dash board' up on the handle bars to mount the
watts uop and the speedo...back soon folks off for a ride ;)

Quick lap around the block unfortunately ran out of road before having to slow for round aboutz but managed to top out at 59.5km/hr (36.9m/hr for you backward Americans ;-P ) (thats ~20km/hr over the speed limit on that stretch of road too its a 40km/hr zone LoL)

speedometer_pics.jpg

I need to find me a loooong flat hill less road where i can use 3rd gear only using 1st (to get up hill) and 2nd before having to slow...trikes still accelerating at this point too LoL..I would think 70 would be easily doable whether i would want to be on it at that speed is another question...might leave that for the test riders LoL...60 is WAAAAY fast enough for me 40 is just fine to be honest... I am also in desperate need for the Maxxis tire i ordered yesterday for the front end too, this knobbly thing is making some BAD vibrations at speed...

Back soon..

I ordered a Maxxis Hookworm 24x2.5 tire for the front wheel of the trike few days ago, got the call this arvo that it was in so had the good ol chook picks it up for me and drops it off, 10 minutes later i was of on a lap of he block for a test...it is 100% improvement on the knobbly front, make next to no noise VERY impressed, think it looks the shizz to :: wink :: ...now just need the 4.25wide 20in rims & tires from ChoppersUS to finish the wheel department off ;)

Couple of obligatory pics of the new tire fitted -->

That there is true class! Does the front suspension actually do its thing yet? By the way that chain tensioner is super cool!
otherDoc

Wow! Brilliant on that chain tensioner. I can't believe I wasted a couple of hours on the lathe etc. to make one that wasn't half as good.

Cheers RLT...the chain tensioner works well thankfully better than my cheap crap Yi-Yun Brand Controller which has already given up the ghost...I'm thinking using an 8amp charge via the controllers 3amp rated charging plug might not have been the best idea...

I Have inquired about freight costs on the following unit (TNC Scooters are disappointingly slow responding still waiting after 36 hours for response)-->

60VControllerMode%20HK60.jpg

If i dont hear anything by morning i'll buy via their EBay shop and buy the other items i included on the order from my local scooter shop...(which only sell upto 36volt controllers before anyone asks why i dont get the controller there LoL)

Alternatively can anyone suggest another controller that would be suitable for my 1000watt brushed motor 48 volt 20ah setup...only requires battery, throttle and motor leads not all the lighting etc......

I have also started work on another frame...shall wait till i am further along in the construction before i post pics on that...suffice to say it is lower 'cruiser' look MUCH more "chopper like" if you will...I plan to transfer the forks and trike rear directly onto the new frame HOPEFULLY should be a hassle free change over and completed in a few hours :)

Appreciate any info on speed controllers...

Matt (1000watt from this forum) bought up his lil 60cc ICE cruiser he made to my place few days back-->

matts_cruiser1.jpg

Now i'm guessing some here will turn their noses up at it simply because its an ICE bike?... all well and good each to their own...but
i must say the craftsman ship that went into this ride is outstanding...thing is schweet ... Matt has also decided to drop his 1000watt
brushless motor into it with a 48v 20ah Lifepo4 :: wink :: will be even better then ;)

I really liked the low seated position soooo..With that in mind i hit the garage to make something similar

Here's a few pics as i put the frame together --->

Custom_crusier.jpg

.those with keen eye will notice the incorrect rotation of the rear dropouts ::wink::
didn't matter in the end the dropouts were notched for the trike conversion to fit into before being welded in place

Custom_crusier_2.jpg

Lower slightly longer definitely easier for me to get onto :: wink :: i think the lower CG of the bike
will help cornering speeds too.;)

I will fit the motor and sprockets this arvo and then it will be ready to go (well...ready when i get a new speed controller)

Back soon fellas...
