I have a mountain bike with a BL-36 kit on it and just recently installed a cheap Bell 15-function bicycle computer only to realize that it doesn't seem to work with an electric bike due to the electrical interference generated by the motor.

The bike computer is the basic type in which you attach a magnet to the spoke and a sensor to the fork. They are all designed to be mounted on the front wheel and since I have a front-hub motor, there is a huge magnetic field already on the wheel which pretty much makes the computer useless.

Has anyone else successfully installed a bicycle computer onto the front wheel that has a front-hub motor?

I wonder if I can cut the wire and extend the length of it to reach the rear wheel. It seems to be just a single wire inside...

How do you know it is because of electrical interference? Have you tried repositioning the magnet?

I don't know for sure if its electrical interference but the spokes on the front wheel are already magnetized which leads me to think that it is affecting the sensor. The rear wheel (the one without the motor) is not magnetized.

I have tried repositioning the magnet to a higher part of the spoke but it starts to get too far from the sensor so the only good place is a few inches above the edge of the motor. Anything more is too far, anything less is too close to the motor.

The computer is brand new and I know it works because I tested it manually by running the magnet across the sensor a few times and it registered the speed.

I suppose I'll cut the wire and splice on a few more inches to it and connect the sensor to the rear wheel.

you need to reposition the sensor away from the motor too. probably behind the brake on the back side of the fork, and you may need to fit some rubber or foam inbetween it and the frame for spacing, then have the magnet as close to the rim as possable.

Or just move it to the rear. All my previous Cat Eyes worked off the rear wheel.
