Yeah that's my biggest fear next to it being stolen. Looking into registration and insurance as a moped or motorbike might not be a bad idea.

You cannot get insurance on an illegal ebike, and you can't register a bicycle as a motorcycle, since it comes with no VIN.
Check out what your moped laws are before considering it an option.

If you're going to build a very fast bike, make it not look like one:

Good point, prevention measures are probably the better use of money that way.

Yeah the RS50 is the only one that is in full production currently, which is why the others are a bit more complicated as far as pricing goes. Direct from suppliers, the 50PL preproduction "grade A" cells are cheaper than the production "grade A" RS50 cells by almost a dollar each.

Chinese trading companies, like suncell, vapcell, luoyang apower, etc. I bought some from diy500amp but lets just say I had to get a partial refund for them... From these distributors/trading companies the EXW price per cell is what I'm comparing, but the MOQ is usually 130 pcs, and it has to be shipped and imported. It's usually not that cost effective if you buy less than a couple hundred cells. Hence the group buy xD. I've been primarily ordering cells in shipments of 500+ cells for myself which has allowed me to quote the 50PL cells for $4.50 when I build packs, and sell them for $5.00 (exw price is around $3.00 for the 50pl preproduction grade A). It's a bit of a mess right now, so that's why I said best to wait a little, perhaps.

However the rs50 is a little less murky, and could likely be gotten at 130pcs for under $700, depending on the current situation of tariffs etc.

Another downside is that when ordering from a chinese supplier, the cells are going to be coming by slow boat unless you pay a large premium for air freight. So usually it's a lead time of 40 days or so.

For example, DDP shipping for a single box of 130 pcs might cost $150 bucks, while DDP shipping for 520 pcs (4 boxes) would be $220.

With $4.00 EXW, that comes out to about $5.15 per cell at 130 pcs, and $4.42 per cell at 520 pcs.

Unless you trust the supplier, it's also good to at the very least spot check the shipments, while for "preproduction" cells or anything without logo or ccc stamp, I always test every single cell.

Also, I believe I've seen posts from a couple distributors offering 50pl cells on this forum in the selling section, you can ask them what prices they can do.

@Nix Liou I’ll take a look at 50PL sales as they get closer to production. I’m not in a rush to build a battery, so I’m happy to wait until these cells have a more firm presence on the market. If I’m paying $500-600 for 120 cells plus shipping, I want to make sure I’m getting my money’s worth. I’ll look into those other group buys and sales of prepro cells, but I think in terms of guaranteeing what I’m getting for my money, waiting a few more months for full production is probably the best bet. I’ll keep an eye out for your group bit when it comes around.
