You may save on your Gas $$'s, but the Fed will still want their $$'s one way or another !!.
U.S. Congress and at least three states are proposing the idea of taxing motorists on miles travelled in addition to taxing them on the fuel they use to better make up a shortfall in federal highway funding in a move that would capture revenue from alternative-fueled and electric-drive vehicles while removing some of the incentive for buying fuel-efficient cars.

The Congressional Budget Office last week released a 38-page report examining the idea of using a so-called vehicle miles travelled (VMT) tax to better align taxes with highway costs incurred by U.S. drivers. Oregon, Texas and Washington state are also considering VMTs, with Oregon proposing a VMT on drivers of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles that would start in 2014.

Gotta pay road tax if you're on 4 wheels. Would you rather cars pay it.. or everyone?

At the same time, this chips at the idea that electric people are freeloaders.
Electric car drivers aren't gonna be happy but it's either that or they tax the electricity that comes out of the wall somehow.

/\ That. Personally, I fully support states doing this. In fact, I think this is a much better way to appropriately tax vehicle use than fuel taxes.

Just tax Tires. That way they can tax old peoples walkers and baby crips and strolers as well aas bicycles, and autmobiles, every vehicle that uses a rubber wheel !

I already pay tax on my electric, it's actually 50% of of my electric bill.

Exactly. You wear out tires fast if hauling ass and heavy, just like the road is wearing out because you are haling ass and heavy. Perfect for taxing the real offender. But then bootleg tire sellers would be everywhere. No way the mob would pass that one up.

Could do similar, by raising the registration tax on vehicle weight more. But then some damn state would decide to be the "Liberia" of state registration and all the trucks would "live" there. You'd have to make it a federal surcharge on top of the state fee.

"No representation without taxation!" I say... First, eliminate all funding streams for roads other than fuel tax. Continue to fund sidewalks, bike paths, etc through the mix of funding streams that currently fund roads.

Exlectric vehicles would then be a "loophole" yes, but I agree 'lectrics are/can be taxed at the electric meter. Heck if we paid a reality-based price for utility electric, you'd see a lot more solar panels on rooftops, leading to a more distributed, diversified electric grid.
