I keep it on when i walk into stores, banks etc for quick visits, freaks people out but i dont care, i feel cozy in there..
One cold rainy day last year I walked into Fry's grocery store with my FF on, visor flipped up, jacket and gloves also still on, so I could just use the ATM at the (otherwise closed) bank right inside the door, and while I was using it a security guy came up and told me I'd ahve to either leave or take the helmet off and go put it out in my vehicle. I did take it off, but I told him that if I had a vehicle to put it "in", I wouldn't need to wear one, and that I wasn't going to leave it in the pouring rain on my bike to fill up with water. I guess he wasn't expecting me to respond back to him, becuse he just walked away with a wierd look on his face.

Sounds like a guy with a job who was just saying what he was told to say.

That you had a logical response to the non-sense he was told to blather obviously didn't compute with the poor fellows world-view (work-view) that he is "security" and everybody must obey.

I always take mine off indoors, just a courtesy thing I guess. Gives a good place to put gloves if you wearer them.

Nightclubs, restaurants, and such have rules to what clothes you can where when you enter. It might be the same case with a grocery store as well. Maybe to prevent some thug walking in with his face all covered up taking whatever he wanted at gunpoint. From my experience with all the grocery stores I've walked into have I yet to find a sign stating "no shoes, no shirt, no helmet, no business".

I don't know if you guys have seen these helmets but they look pretty good. After watching a few videos of rui_fujino I thought he would have to be crazy not to wear something more hardcore on his ebike and it turns out he does.

To me they seem like the ideal 'ebike helmet'.

Not many place seem to sell them, I seen them pop up on ebay now and then.

To me, it's the eye protection that is the main benefit. Even today at 65 degrees, the wind at 35mph can be brutal, and sunglasses are not enough. I am thinking of getting a pair of ski goggles, for these in between temps where I don't want to lug the big helmet and when it might warm up.

They might, but so far none of them I've been into around here have anythign posted other than the "no shirt no shoes" thing, if even that--some do have "no bikes no skateboards no skate shoes" though. Heck, even the bank I have my home account at hasn't ever said a thing about it the times Iv'e gone in with various helmets on. Just the one security guy at the grocery store.

I just got a free snowboarding helmet at a tag sale. It's got some nice ear covers built in, but otherwise looks like a typical bmx helmet. It looks great, with some small adjustable vents on the front. These sort of helmets look and feel like they would protect a lot better than a Styrofoam bicycle helmet. I'm going to see if I can attach a clear visor to the front over the top half of my face.

I like the DOT helmet for the best warmth and protection, but it doesn't get that cold here that often. It does increase drag a big too, since it's significantly larger.

Amazing a fairly cheap bike helmet got stolen anywhere. Used, they go for a couple bucks in a thrift store, and still don't sell.

A full face motorcycle helmet makes a dandy shopping basket to me. Or it rides in the cart if buying more than a headfull.. .
A very wise person once said "never eat anything bigger than your head"

Anyway, here's what I'm looking at for a new urban lid.
Really, we've got to up our game if people are going to take ebikes as serious transportation for shopping and commuting.
I'm saying we've got to dress better to be treated better.
It currently looks like we're getting ready to do battle in some elite contact sport.

I'm thinking about getting a full face snowmobile helmet. I'm riding around all winter in Southern Ontario and the wind chill on the face sucks, not to mention snow and ice bouncing off my face etc. I find my nose runs like crazy riding in cold weather and I have to constantly hork it out. I think having a full face helmet would make winter riding a lot less unpleasant but I'm concerned about looking like darth vader on my bicycle.

So far I've been riding without a helmet. I just wear a toque, hoody and neck warmer with sunglasses this setup works pretty well most of the time but when it's raining or snowing I get smacked in the face and when the temperature drops to like -10c with 50kph wind chill my face goes all numb can't be good.

Is a motorcycle / snowmobile helmet overkill?

I used to do something similar. It took like 2 minutes to get it all on my head set up right. A pain in the butt, and if I stopped anywhere on the way home, I had to set it all up again. That's when I decided to try a full face motorcycle helmet. It goes on and comes off in like one second, since at e-bike speeds I don't fasten the chin strap. I got the kind where the whole face lifts up, which is convenient.

One branch of my bank used to have a sign saying "Please remove sunglasses and headgear upon entering". So now out of habit that's what I do; I don't want to get shot reaching for my wallet.

I finally got myself a helmet. It's an HJC CL-16. It's my first time riding with any kind of a helmet. It makes riding in cold weather much more comfortable. The anti fog pinlock works very well keeping the visor from being fogged up. I feel a lot safer riding now. Traffic seems to yield more than before. It makes me feel like I stand out more though and takes away from the under the radar, I'm just a bicycle look, which I really don't like. It's on the heavy side, much heavier than a bike helmet. It makes turning my head a bit of a chore and my neck feels strained after wearing it these past few days.

Overall the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Curious how many of you ride with full face helmets?

yes always, unless its really really hot (over 30c). i wear the mace full face dh helmet . also it is great in winter .

I wear a Giro dh helmet year round, when it goes below 0c i add a toque and neck sock shoved up to my chin and down into my coat.

Last day of " work " on nov 26, way below freezing, i used my ski-doo helmet with a 12v heated shield plug, with a 3 cell lipo pack in my pocket. not only keeps fog out, actually warms your face !

Electr0n,
I have nearly identical setup. A HJC modular helmet with pinlock anti-fog. Your neck will adapt quickly to the added weight.

I wear mine when the temp drops to about 40*f in the fall through the winter. It really makes it easy to ride - pop that helmet on the head and ride. Eyes, ears and face stay warm down to at least 8*f (I have not had colder days in the last 2 years to see how low I can go). A neck warmer comes in handy under 15*f.

The full helmet is a great platform to mount helmet cam and fore & aft lights, but not more or less so than a bicycle helmet.

The only down side I have noticed is when stopping off on the way home. Do I leave the helmet with the bike, or take it in with me? I stopped for a 2 hour event one night recently and it was raining. I lifted the face of the helmet and placed it over my battery/controller, as extra rain protection. The bike was locked up behind a bank, in a low traffic area, near a camera, so I was not worried about theft/mischief. So, the helmet in that case was pulling double duty as a rain guard.

I've had two crashes with the helmet on. A bike helmet might have helped in each - now way to know - but with the moto helmet, my melon came out of both just fine. Both crashes included hard head hits to pavement.

I've considered using a full helmet in at least the winter for comfort reasons. The problem arises, in my mind, when I ponder how to see behind me. I don't love turning my head to look back when riding no matter what. I did find http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BB0DTQU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00BB0DTQU&linkCode=as2&tag=almar01-20 this helmet. It's pretty expensive, I guess, but I don't really know of any other options for seeing behind me. I have imagined gluing one or two rear view bicycle mirrors to some part of a full helmet. That would be substantially cheaper assuming it would work.

The need to look behind you drops with higher acceleration and top speed :D

Thinking of buying a full face downhill helmet. Seems a lot of you are from the cold how is wearing them in 100 degrees summer weather? I'm from south Florida.
Any suggestions on good, light, highly ventilated helmets.

At bike speed, you would want a bmx helmet for hot weather riding. Full face but well ventilated, no face shield. But if you ride 40 mph all the time, you should be in motorcycle gear by then imo.

I, Me, Mine: AGV Blade Helmet 8)

I use the FogCity add-on to prevent fog. This one is 1/2 the weight of a normal full-faced helmet - and is designed for Mopeds in mind.

Good enough for me & my glasses, especially in rain :)
Stay dry, KF
