I see that you can get a 0.32mm depth transverse probe (T3-0303M) to use with the LZ-610H Teslameter from Dexing Magnet. That would fit in the smallest airgap we're likely to encounter.....
Lots of DIY designs: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=diy+qaussmeter&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr&ei=nzZlUu-ZG6jb0QWx74HYDw#q=diy+gaussmeter&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&spell=1
If anyone is interested I have a Bell Model 9640 Gaussmeter with STB4-0404 probe that could be made available after the first of the year (2014). Price would likely be around $700 US. If interested let me know and we can work something out. It calibrated within better than 5% at 1T about 2 years ago.
