GCinDC's Giant DH Comp

GC - do you have an ebike I can rent from you next week? (partly serious about it). :D

I'll prob try to make it in one of your videos, pedaling a road bike rented off spinlister.

had some big rains last week but thought the trail by the river would have dried up. not a mudbath, but gooey and and swampy in spots. a couple scenes:

hosed the bike down afterwards, and some water must have gotten sucked into miniE, because it's temp sensor started spiking again afterwards. too lazy to deal w/ it last night, and commuted in with it like that, but must have cooked all the water after the first 2 miles, since it stopped after that.

here's a super crappy vid of the spiking:

btw, after last time i'd mentioned it, it never happened again until after the bath yesterday.

i'm picking up longer screws today to attach the heat sink, so will seal it after that. i've ridden in heaping downpours for almost a year w/o issues, so i think the corrosion from winter salt created some gaps for the water to get in...

smoking gun: (bad analogy, but hey - even after a cooking hot commute this afternoon, she's still got residual water from somewhere (or god help me that's not WD40 when i slipped while spraying the chain... )

and now just looking at it, which end do you really not want getting wet? dip the wire side in a bucket, who cares...
20140513_215925.jpg

i exaggerate, but the other end, dang, that's where all the business is! and like separated from the fets/caps by a firewall of sorts... the temp sensor must be down there somewhere but i can't find it.
20140513_215856.jpg

got some permatex laying around, and i don't ever see a need to take the bottom (non-wire) side off again!
20140513_220135.jpg

mmm, yummy. and shut up about the paint job. i think i sprayed it while holding in my hand while riding in a car... lol
20140513_220231.jpg

and the elevator in get smart shot:
20140513_220401.jpg

gonna wait to dab permatex on the existing heat sink screw holes till i figure out how to mount the external one. i'm thinking of removing the middle section of fins so the heat sink straddles the main tube, and attach the miniE to the right side (cause it's too big altogether to fit in triangle) and the top corner of the miniE is beside head tube...

i went out and chatted with them. why do folks always ask if you charge it when you pedal? sooo funny to always hear that as the first question. anyway, we shared emails and i'll send him some links and vids..

in other news, i've been starting to work on a new build. i was thinking i might wait to post about it till i was all done, but it goes against my nature not to share about it! are y'all curious? the wife thinks i'm building it for sale, but we'll see.

building axel's cleanly inspired me...

and in other, other news, i met w/ solar panel installer yesterday, and am pretty pscyhed about plastering the roof with 38 panels for a 9.8kw! :p

Did you give up on Thud?
well, i suppose i could try a lightning rod middrive setup on my own, but no, i've not given up on thud. if i don't hear from him before the wisconsin trip, i'll just do a day trip drive over to pick it up, finished or not.

as for the 'new build', i've had two people who've been extremely interested in a similar build, and willing to put up the cash, so i've had my eyes out for dh comps on CL. this one came up in saint louis, and it's a large (19") which i've always wanted:
20140515_100049.jpg

so the plan was to build it up and sell, but i might end up keeping it and selling mine. i thought it'd be a lot nicer. i like the frame, def the right size for me, but forks, shocks, shifter, brakes are so so.

adapters arrived yesterday and are now installed:

(couldn't bare to look at that red tire anymore, lol)

had to buy a new headset. original got trashed in mail. dude had a bike shop pack it, and they didn't even use any padding. i was pissed...

new miniE and BMS in the mail (though i am tempted to toss on 24s and my 18fet controller temporarily, and get another rider so we can race the setups (20s minie vs 24s infineon)...

so that's it. nothing particularly exciting for you, but i really need a second bike. it's too hard to work on the commuter an need it everyday..

On the topic of thermal grease, you can do MUCH. Better than the generic white goo. I just replaced mine on my mini-e with some absolutely ancient arctic silver I had and even that dropped more than 8 degrees C off MOSFET temp at end of a charge cycle. I have ordered some Gelid solutions GC extreme which is about the best compound around while still being easy to use. It wouldn't surprise me if you don't need any external heat sink at all after using some proper paste. The stuff on my mini-e had already dried up and wouldn't have been doing much good when I opened it up to repair.

fet screws are M3s got the too long size to cut down, cause the too short was... too short. screwed as far into existing heat sink as i could and put tape around screw to measure depth:

blue dh team headset was dented, missing bearing, and ring....
20140525_101148.jpg

and bottom bearing was gunky and crunchy:

extracted cups w/ screwdriver:

banged on new cups:

new bearing and ring (can't believe the bike shop lost these or packed it so they got lost OR that it was ridden w/o 'em!)

no progress today. w/ spring/summer here, time to work on another project:

header over windows? you're right... the ceiling would be too low if followed the roof line. as it is, i'm trying to figure out how to avoid the roofing nails from popping through and bloodying heads...

fixing up the hs3540 in the psycho for the for sale bike. flipped the wheel/rotor in the stator again and seems perfectly centered. not quite sure why i'd flipped it the first time.. :?:

this 1" hole saw LOVES to eat aluminum. sucks the drill through so fast i need to slow it down so the cutout doesn't get stuck in there:

mmm, filings:
20140527_170104.jpg

anyone know where i can get a half twist throttle w/ momentary switch on it (in US)?

3/4" roofing nails should be ok but if they stick out then see if you can find 5/8". it doesn't take much header since it is a light roof. if you can jack the roof up a little on that edge then pull that top plate back off and turn it on edge and double it up with another 2x4 laminated with some 1/2" ply, and that should be adequate. since you have the kids too i would recommend a net of some sort across the front edge outside. maybe look for a used badminton or similar net that you could hang across where the floor line is to break their fall if they climb out on the window lip and trip. or some kinda trellis and train some fancy plants on it to please the wife.

funny, i saw that just before i posted, and when i try to purchase, get this message:

are they for real? preposterously low prices...

Greg,

Freaking me out with the way that was/is framed. Is that a 2x2 holding up the eave? It's hard to add a shed roof to a gable end without bizarre roof lines. I could probably offer some ideas if you want to add some more pictures. If you already have a plan disregard this post. How ever it works out should be a fun project.

Nice extension work, is it a tree house for the kids ? I ain't no builder (I stick to rocket science :p ) but shouldn't you have a bigger cut out around that tree trunk ? Doesn't look like much room for growth. Or movement in general, given some of the storms you seem to cop there and how trees get up and walk away :p

lol. yes, but if i ever need a place to spend the night, it's nice to have another option... and good eyes, yes, i need to cut out the deck more around that tree!

lol, no, it's a 2x4. should probably have a header, but i think it'll be alright. the roof plywood is only 1/2" - should have probably used 3/4", but decided kids shouldn't be going up there. but i got up on it to crawl around and screw the plywood down. and with the trees there, shouldn't get too much snow.

hehe. the fun thing was tilting the ridge beam to create a single plane for the shed roof, since the front deck wall is angled from the garage. you are right - the roof line would look bizarre from the alley, but only the driver of the trash truck who comes through up high might see it. haha. from the inside, however, that hole will make a nice window, and/or a good way to climb onto the garage roof.

i'm not done, but love the feedback. it's all fun and games in the back (at least until the lawsuit, but let's not even go there.. )

but what i'd like feedback on even more is this (screenshot of the solar installer's proposed layout):
solarpanellayout.png

- first off, we want to add a front porch (roughly the size as shown above - part 1 of the project), and were tending towards a hip roof, but the panels lay out much nicer on a shed roof, but the porch rake/eave/beam trim gets a bit busy along the corner board - i can show the architectural plans, but mainly wanted feedback on:
- the solar panel layout:
-- in the first proposal, the panels were flat against the rear/north roof, and would be "15-20% less efficient"
-- i asked if they could tilt them up, and this is how they did it. i hate it because: 1) looks, tho only the rear neighbors could see it 2) snow/ice build up/drainage 3) wind exposure
-- i asked if he could tilt each row, and they can, but they'd have to remove a row to space them so the front ones wouldn't shade the rear.

so porch options:
1. hip roof, cleaner trim lines, no panels, more curbside appeal, but 25% less solar system power generation
2. shed roof, busier trim, centered panels, more power

top rear/north roof layout options:
1. flat against roof, less efficient, better looking, better drainage, less efficient
2. upraised, one plane, more efficient, worse looking, worse drainage
3. tilted in rows, more efficient, fewer rows/less power, but not as bad looking/drainage..

Panels will be Canadian Solar 250W (3'x5'-6") with enphase 250 micro inverters

PS. what i'm really psyched about - our third floor gets super hot because we have no attic, only a cathedral ceiling, and they/i didn't make a big enough gaps for the ridge vent, and the solar panels, just by being there, will soak up all that heat, keep it off the roof, in addition to powering the AC that we'll consequently need less of! :p

Meanwhile, in the City which never sleeps, we have good weather, lots of nice Chicas in dresses, and lots of expensive cars to scrape

Personally I like the shed roof option - but that could all change depending on what the kerb side eye level point of view looks like.
Regarding north roof - It's got to be option 3. Better bang for your buck, less issues and not an eyesore :)

What's the deal in your part of the world regarding buyback from the grid? This seems to vary wildly be geography. I guess what I'm really asking is do you really need the full 10-12kw/can you actually consume all of the KWH that the panels put out across the day?
