GCinDC's Giant DH Comp

think the h40 is toast. making strange grinding sounds on decel (w/o regen - my regen switch broke a while ago. :x )

accelerates ok, if anemicly, then resists/grinds on coast. i'm thinking the combo of hitting 400F+ a couple times with constant salt exposure did it in. i shoulda sprayed the coils etc more recently... and oh the salt..

i swapped it out with an hs3540 in a 26" (psycho rim w/ cracking weld joint. ) and it's been running fine, no grinding. and surprisingly damn fast - can't remember the winding, maybe the hs3580? can't remember. no wonder it got so heat saturated in the snow last year pulling kids..

too damn busy these days. work is killing me.

shoulder better. got a cortisone shot last week. after that, it was like the constant fire in my shoulder got doused. actually slept thru the night a couple times. :p

Great news on the shoulder, not so great on the motor. Salt looks brutal, so glad don't have to deal with winter here.

Time for a MXUS 3k or Cro/clone? If you smoked the H40 then I can't imagine the H35 is going to fare too well. I went from H35 to Cro and it's night and day, same controller/battery/current is very noticeably quicker/cooler.

If only you lived here in Washington or Colorado, there's some special lotion that'd do wonders for your shoulder!

That salt is brutal! I bet the cars suffer too.

washing the bike after riding when salt on the street could help to reduce corrosion. or cleaning it general from time to time :)
400F wtf? no wonder you melt the motor. this is a doom loop because almost sure the magents got damage and this turns into further efficiency decrease and more heat.
why not use temperature cut off with the adaptto?

was using temp cutoff, but had left it at factory setting, i believe 350F? i couldn't remember if i'd lowered it on my mini and should have checked/lowered it. i kinda assumed factory setting was ok. the main problem is that i can't read the screen when i ride. since they over did my eyes w/ lasic, i need reading glasses all the time now, and obviously don't wear them when i ride. and it's been so cold, the only time it overheats is at the top of my hill, and in this case, the temp shut off worked, dropping my speed to nothing but then with the lack of air current, the temp spiked again, not sure how above 400F w/ the cutoff at 350 but it did... i'd have thought the halls would have gone first, so the fact that the phase wires went also makes me think they were getting damaged by salt too. don't know for sure, so probably shouldn't speculate.

in anycase, it's def time for a bigger motor. wanted to just get a 24" wheel and see how that went, but i'd have to relace one side anyway, to dish it for my damn rear triangle...

i just haven't had time to fool with it. in the meantime, i've gotta baby the hs35 a bit on the hill.

It's a case of 'heatsoak'. The hottest point is not right at the sensor, and by the time it trips, the windings are hot enough to continue to raise the temperature. On my cromotor I could do 6-8kW continuously with a 260F limit at about 40F ambient.

Greg, you gotta get the DH comp swing-arm mod done by quality heliarc. That way your swing arm is symmetrical and capable of easily fitting a cromotor. If anyone ever needed one its you.

I'm getting ready to have my newest project done by quality heliarc. He's going to widen to 160mm symmetrical and also widen the front to accept full 4" wide fa tires. In other news, a friend of mine is just finishing up the laser digital scanning of the 18" DH Comp frame so that we can use it to model the new battery box design. It should be capable of holding 20s AND the controller. More when I get closer.

This should work in your 135mm dropouts?

man, it's been a long time.

shoulder is MUCH better. shoveling snow/ice has helped with strength and i'm finally getting more range of motion. my pt therapist said it was the worst frozen shoulder he'd seen, which is hard to believe, but there it is. i don't see how it could be the worst if it was only two months but whatever. i'm on the mend.

bike's been a total PIA. ;-(

i knew it was only a matter of time but the rear studded tire finally got a flat. luckily while at home trying to pump it up. i never want to see a presta valve again. i put the hookworms back on and they feel soooo much better than the 1.75" studs. those felt precarious. too thin. and i f'd up and pumped up the rear shock too much when i had the rear triangle apart - only way to pump it - and now the rear wheel chatters around any turn with the slightest bump. just have to avoid the ice, which there's still plenty of, but hopefully no more coming.

what else? the forks leaking oil - in a small puddle on the living room floor when i had the bike inside and upside down.

and salt everywhere. i don't even care. i'm so fed up.

thanks for the tip on heliguy. i should definitely ship my frames out there. IF i keep on running the dh comps. i'm almost ready to chuck 'em. all my half ass stuff has come apart.

the ebrake broke a while ago - but that's just as well, since my motor runs too hot now even w/o regen.

it's getting pretty annoying taking the battery off twice a day just to bring up to my desk/or inside my house to charge (and keep warm).

and the bms was acting up. i had this problem a lot last year w/ the mini-e, but i find that below freezing, the BAh setting drops from my normal 11.6Ah capacity setting to 0.00.
20150225_071351.jpg

one super cold day, it happened over and over again, every time i hit the throttle. i tried to pull kids on the sled and that's the worst. seems to happen when pulling major current. i even rode w/ the Battery Setup screen on to watch and saw it and watched it drop suddenly to 0.00, but it was way to cold to take a video. finally i figured out i could just disable the bms to run it. kinda surprised others haven't noticed that. i thought there was something about a heated display - that somehow the display is related, not the controller, cause it was plenty warm. i actually left my battery warmer on the display for an hour and then was able to ride w/o problem.

i was using the battery warmer and charger on a timer, set to turn on at like 5AM and charge/warm right before work, but it started getting just too cold i thought.

luckily my battery has been solid. knock knock. after replacing that 4s pack, the replacement have fit in perfectly balanced w/ the other cells, so that's a relief.

naw, i keep thinking once spring rolls around i get up the road bike again, just to get the exercise and be free of the ebike hassles. but the roads around horrific, so i'm not looking forward to the ass pounding.

maybe i should rig up the other strommer. or get another frame, but then i'll have to go thru getting all the parts again... new forks, etc.

not sure if my 26" psycho rim can make it till spring. i've been keeping an eye on the weld crack and it's opening a bit.
15%2B-%2B1

obviously i'm avoiding curb jumps etc, and i'm wondering how it will fail. anyone know? i'm guessing it will separate, the wheel will widen, the sharp edges pop the tire and the wheel will rub the inside of the frame... at worst it'll open sideways and an edge will catch the triangle and stop suddenly and cause it to skid along. i just hope i'm holding on tight enough, but the tire skids so much more than the MC wheel. anyway..

i should probably start buying stuff but am so damn busy and just not in the mood. ah well. it's a february kind of feeling...

is this all corosion or dirt? how does it look after cleaning it?
i believe this rim is not welden. it looks like its a stuck rim so i would not bother about..

I've also experienced the same thing with my 22s 10ah pack (4s & 2s 5000 Turnigy hardcase) that i have been using for around 1 ½ years (around 350 cycles) and the voltage sag was getting annoying as i wasn't able to reach top speed anymore (made worst by the cold weather) also the capacity setting kept changing to zero Ah so decided to replace the batteries. Its amazing how much the cold weather affects ebikes!

so do think the voltage sag was causing the zeroing of the battery Ah setting? i've not been able to notice that, but would make sense under 100A load, but i really don't think my voltage is sagging that much, esp when i keep the pack indoors...

moot point for the moment. completely smoked the motor at the top of my hill today.

yesterday i was having all sorts of probs w/ power cutting out. i either had water in a cold motor and the temp sensor was shorting, or there was water in the wiring, or even in the controller. but thinking it was the motor, i disabled the temp sensor yesterday. made no difference but i forgot to turn it back on!

at the top of my hill i completely lost power, after just cutting in front of a car  , pulled over, saw a !HALLS! and then noticed smoke POURING out of the motor...

picks to come eventually...

I can't be sure that your cutoff issues are to do with your batteries because when mine motor cutoff the 'low batt' message flashed up but after a few seconds it went away and the motor kicked in again. There are some other users with similar issues to you on the adaptto owners thread http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=61183&start=1225
Sorry to hear about your motor.

got a call into heliarc - thanks for the suggestion. gotta decide if i should send black and blue frame triangles, or just one to start. probably both. no sense building another dished wheel..

so the shopping begins. hunting for a mxus 3000 now. anyone got any suggestions where to pick one up asap? feel free to pm me. thanks!

and for pics of the destruction:

Decided to see wth gcindcs been up to,holy moly! .

ice was back this weekend with frozen rain :(

I was the only bike on the trail this morning and I slowed down to keep upright. I was riding on ice sheets that were melting. The 2 joggers I saw were interesting; not running but gingerly stepping along.

Glad for my studded tires 8)

that's awesome. but maybe it's time for some fresh studded tires? i had so many studs missing on rear tire i had to be careful, but with a fresh set, i'd have no concerns whatsoever on sheer ice.

from back in jan 2011, i loved when everything was coated in a sheet of ice:

we haven't had the same thing again until this year, and i missed it. :(

necessity being mother of invention, and the metro sucking and all, i've started work on the 2nd stromer... it's SO clean

I do have new studs this year. Chain Reaction Cycles had a sale on Marathon Winters I could not resist :D

Use Boeshield or some other protection on the nipple/spoke/rim interface to help with the salt issues you face :|

My first winter with the KMX, we had an early October storm. Had to ride back home on sheets of ice... no studs. I thought I would be fine, until I started just drifting around in circles on the glassy cyclepath! No harm done. Had to get on the roads for part of the trip... but with slicks, pshht, I couldn't even get off the line. So slippery! Held up a long line of cars while I dragged my bike out of the way.

I have a set of aggressive tires for next winter waiting and ready =) This winter, I just rode my DF pedalbike to stay warm...

One thing's for sure. Winter riding is tough. It takes time to keep things clean and keep them working properly. And to be safe.

All great reasons for me to build that velomobile!

It amazes me the weather you Northern Hemisphere folks ride in!

the mxus 3000 should be arriving this week.

planning to ship the rear triangle out to heliarc, if i can get the damn thing off. i tried everything, but i can't get those rings out to remove the bearings....

in the meantime i worked up the other stromer to take to work tomorrow. :p

reposting from here: stuffed the controller and wiring in the stromer battery compartment and just clamped my 22s 11.6Ah lipo pack into the frame.

it's fun to ride! feels light, changes gears great, and i can actually feel the difference pedaling. obviously won't be going to fast, so this is a throwback to my first ebiking days, and surprisingly fun.

Fun is good :D How fast does it go?

Looks like the snow and ice should be gone soon.
