GCinDC's Giant DH Comp

You ll love it Greg! Now its moto tires all the way.
Btw have at look at John in CR cooling thread.

Greg,

What are you gonna lace it in? The 19" mc rim? Looks like JRH is gonna finish mine in about two weeks. He ordered my rim and tire. I'm frickin pumped to get that thing on the road. I'll let you know how it fits into the new 150mm swingarm, cause if the hubzilla is as wide as the 5404....its gonna be a tight frickin squeeze into the 135mm dropouts.

moto tires sound good. research necessary... i ordered a jrh custom spoke to test, along with another batch for the hs3540 26"... 19" might be nice but 1.85 not nec..

soldered up the hall. it works fine. and replaced damaged shrinktube on bare wires with jbweld. put a bed on the stator, to prevent melting/grounding the wires (which i'll zip tie after it dries) and finally fattened up the jbweld over the hall legs, and to beef 'em up for turbulence to come.

@Greg- Awesome you got cromotor! Time lace it up and mount on your Giant ebike. :D

ilia are going do lace my 2 cromotors sometime next couple weeks from now after I am done with the moving to new place. I am going run 32S LiPo and Looking forward get my butt kicking.

I reckon you're only 2 more failures away from splurging on a cromotor though :p
is that what you reckon?
I'm going to grow a beard and change my name to nostrodamus :p
Nice one man - look out pedestrians of DC!

Hey Wowsers Greg

So you are going for a cromo! ha ha epic stuff, are you sure that your rear end will be wide enough? ahem! ha ha.
That's going to be a monster, you might have to look in to more batteries to feed it what it wants and maybe a
bigger controller, oh and some life insurance and some good gloves + Hyena spec body armour too :)

Watching with interest! you just go and watch Greg fill that cromo with oil !!

my little 12 fet has been cowering in the corner, simpering and making desperate mouselike squeeks...

but seriously, i've had a lot of reservations about it, why i've been quiet about it, some of which include:
- 50/50 chance i'll kill myself on it
- 50/50 chance i'll kill someone else and spend the rest of my life paying for it
other minor details like:
- the giant not the ideal donor street bike, because of size (shortness, wheelie prone), 135mm dropouts, etc and i'd wanted to use it for dirt
- it will really demand another full upgrade, as you say, of batts, controller, etc.

before i opened the box, i was really tempted to put it straight up for sale to anyone on the wait list.

but once i opened it, well it's kinda like having a new baby. i was up late cradling it in my arms and rocking, singing lullabies...

since i ripped off the deteriorating shrinktube around the halls sensor wires, i decided to insulate them with jbweld, let them dry overnight and then this morning i laid them in rtv sealant between two sets of zip ties, the ones on the bottom to prevent smashing them against the motor, and the one on top to bind them and the sealant so even if it loses it's bond to the stator, it will be held in place by the zip ties. make sense?
20120531_052746.jpg

flipping over the motor, i again made a bed of sealant:
20120531_053841.jpg

and embedded the wires inside and replaced the bearing. i wanted to insert a heatproof fabric shield to prevent further rubbing against the bearing but couldn't find anything suitable.
20120531_055921.jpg

after this it was just a few minutes to seal the sidecovers and screw it all back up.

tonight i'll reinstall the wheel (perhaps after playing with cromo in dropouts  )

and tomorrow morning add 100cc of oil.

checking cromotor placement: spread the dropouts 1cm, no washers. challenging offset (on the dh comp swing arm/rear triangle)...
I'm looking to see what you come up with... I want some nubby tires myself!

20120531_215713.jpg

what i'm riding tomorrow. all more or less shipshape. tho i yanked off that fender and hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. phase and hall wires fastened in at least 10 places with zip ties.
20120531_200834.jpg

old rear brake pads were toast. magic brake cleaner did nothing for them. and they screetched like hell. feeling confident it won't leak, so tossed the new pads on and on test rides tonight it stops great. :D

i'm hoping that's it. i'll behave myself for a couple commutes and then start banging it around.

Urrgh, that pic reminds me of having chemo, one of the drugs they gave me was that colour but in a syringe twice than that size. Unhappy times. :|
(I believe they use similar size syringes when putting down elephants  )

Good to see it all back together and ready for it's first proper run. Shall we place bets on the performance / longevity ? :p
I reckon you should be right this time - atleast I hope for your sanity everything goes ok!

I've been meaning to ask, whats the rear braking like with that big tire ?
The 3" knobbies on my fighter are terrible. Well, not terrible but they very easily lock up with even moderate braking. I guess rear brakes in general don't pull up real hard but I'm guessing the bigger foot print should help.

Greg,

the new 05 swingarm with the 150mm dropouts fits perfectly. I measured all the connections/mounts and they line up exactly. I'm not quite sure where your measurements are coming from. As in, there are only two shock mounts i need to measure on the swing arm. Basically, the 05 swingarm is the exact swingarm from my 03 dh comp, even though it was for an 05 dh team. The only difference is the 150mm dropouts. With these bad boys...even the 5404 fits comfortably with room!!! i''ll have to put spacers on each side! ridiculous! Which should be even better with my cromotor coming in. That thing is also pretty big. i posted the pics on my thread.

somewhat of a sore subject considering how i sheered the threaded disc brake off on one of my first rides with this tire, and then blew a cable when stopping hard in traffic, and then have been enduring such squeeking with oil soaks pads...

now, now they work great. quiet, effective, a very good solid braking performance. they are NOT easy to lock up however, and frankly i'm almost afraid to, for fear of cracking the sidecover mount or bosses or whatever they're called..

SO, today's commute was a success! no leaks! no issues. 49mph downhill. 44mph on the flat. at mile 4 on the way home it surpassed 90C, and considering it wasn't a hall fail after all, i might set the alarm at 100C. ambient temps are rising in DC so this will curtail some of the cooling effect i'm sure.

Let the RedBull videos begin...
i'm actually going to put some paper towels around the axle on the disc side and do some jumps, before ruining another set of pads if it leaks. a diaper if you will.

nevertheless, i've been thinking for a while about posting a list of my old favorite vids. i've gotten a bunch of pm's why i've disabled so many. someday i'll explain, but for now, i've decided to embrace the technology, unleash the beast and made most of my ebike vids public on my channel.

some are good. some suck. and they go back 2.5 years to when i was using some crappy equipment. i may go through and clean them up.

anyway, i've created the following playlists, in case you like things categorized.
highlights
jumps
offroad
scenic
and lastly, commutes

i'll add a few more playlists later.

enjoy.

oh yeah, no leaks. :D

i was running out of time so just threw a wound up paper towel around the axle. just a bit of dirt, no oil that i can tell.
20120602_153059.jpg

i bogged it down hard in sand and temps rose to 110C. it heats up quickly if not moving.

i recently trued up the rear wheel as best i could, it's far from perfect - hence the 5A no load @WOT, but the jumps didn't worsen it, which makes me very happy.

i'm a bit leary of the wiring still, when it crosses the pivot, so am monitoring with bigger and bigger jumps.

i actually found a some steps that allow me to land going downhill and was amazed i hardly felt it at all. i now get what you were talking about, FT...

Classic lady opening door... check. Now just wait'n for the left turn or U turn'r...

I guess this motor is totally silent with the juice added too???

Have you decided on X controller yet? Volts?

I've been thinking about the leakage and I have a couple of ideas I'd like to float to the forum for feedback:

1) Could you pull a slight vacuum on the motor housing, so that when the oil heats up the internal pressure rises, but not above atmospheric pressure? 300 ml of ATF heated from 20C to 80C expands by 20 ml. Assuming the air space in the motor was originally 700 ml, you would need to pull a 3 kPa vacuum to create 680 ml air space. This could be done by mounting a brake bleed screw in the motor cover and pulling a vacuum with a brake bleeder vacuum pump like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/brake-bleeder-and-vacuum-pump-kit-92474.html. A vacuum indicator like those used on air filters could also be used to let you know when you needed to pull the vacuum again.

2) Could you mount a small surplus Bimba style air cylinder http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=4-1486-A&catname=air to the outside of the motor cover? When the oil expands the piston pushes out, when it contracts the piston pulls back. That way the system stays sealed. A 20 ml displacement cylinder looks like a 3/4" bore x 3" stroke.

interesting question. would it suck grease out of the bearings? the leak points seem to be the sidecovers (and the RTV fixes that), around the bearings (sealed), and for the hs3540 the wireslot, both of which i've addressed with copious amounts of sealant. how it hold up with time and abuse will be interesting to watch. would a vacuum alieviate the need for the rtv? i'd doubt it, but would love to hear everyone else's opinions.
