Of course we dont use mpg here, so the nuance of UK vs US mpg didnt occur to me at all.
In metric it's 5.8 liters/100km, which is ~40 US mpg. And you will see numbers like 3l/100km when going 80km/h steadily - even in 20 year old diesels. So i believe this could be improved even further (for hybrids etc), if Europe did not decide to throw the tech away. Only now the producers realize that this was their true advantage...
