GT i-drive 2.0 Build

How do the caps in your controller look ? Not bulged at the top ? They may have vented a little if you have a residue inside your controller.

Why the sudden declaration of the monster build ? A project while the missus is out of town ? :p

HAH! - The price of the new Xlyte 54XX motors is insane, very temping to start another build... Might ressurect the hybrid enduro idea though. On the fence...

Definitely check the caps, I could see some dead caps causing a shuddering issue but still allowing the controller to run. On the top of the caps there are the "crumple zones" that allow the caps to vent instead of explode. Look at those closely to see if they are bulging, they should be pretty flat..

I want to dump the cash on a gopro so bad, but I'm thinking about picking up a decent canon powershot with video instead... The cheaper gopro HD is only like 160 bucks though, and the more I wait the more I'm tempted to pick it up... With the powershot, you get a nice point and shoot camera too, and the gopro really isn't. I'm amazed at how smooth the video is though. What are they using for image stabilization?

Greg rides too hard for a 5400 and they're just too heavy. The HS35 is where it's at 8)
Once I get mine I'll let you know how much juice they can take before smoking

Gopro or Canon? Not sure. I once thought the gopro had image stabilization, but now I'm not so sure... anyway they're two completely different animals. I tried several point and shoots mounted on the bike, and an HD capable cell phone, but they jiggle too much, causing the recording to stop, often restarting the camera.

I'll check the caps again. Good call. When I licked the bottom of the controller, it had a sourish, almost tangy taste.

Just kidding. LOL. Anyway, thinking I might need a spare, I actually replaced a Cap on my original Lyen controller, the one that popped when I shredded the speed switch. Overslept and didn't have time to test it tho.

Laughed out loud at my desk, dead giveaway

Edit: true those hosses are wicked wicked heavy for urban assault riding

Agreed! I will have HS3540 soon and will show the vids for my new stinky bike with HS3540. :)

The GoPro does not have any image stabilization built into it.

gently hauling the kids home up the hill, i thought, 'why not hook up the gopro to record at least the sound, to put online for hub motor experts to diagnose...'

my gentle acceleration up to that point on the return commute prevented the noisy studdering.

well, perhaps i was overzealous in my testing while filming.

i had to pedal it home after this. throttle ONLY causes more groaning, no forward thrust at all... ah me..

Oh no! what happened to it?

Ouch! Look like your 9C motor dying :(

Not sure. I'm waiting for Hyena to wake up and tell me...

Or anyone else!

I'm pretty sure I'll be opening the motor and peeking in there... But I'm lazy. I better go back over old posts to see what to do. I was able to pedal it while on, so I guess that rules out a phase short.

Everything seems to point to the halls? Oh that's right: to test them I rotate the wheel and check for varying voltage on the back of the halls connector..

Trade out your controller with your spare. If it acts the same, it will be time to get into the motor. You are covered with a spare controller and the 6x9?

Missed me by *that* much
I checked ES just before I went to work but you posted this while I was riding, and now I'm at work with youtube blocked.
If you can email me a compressed version I'll check it out.

You're right though, if there no resistance you haven't shorted the phase wires and you want to check the halls for varying voltage.
Open your controller up and see if a cap has let go before you go to the hassle of opening the motor. I'm more leaning towards a controller issue given your previous comments. Hopefully it hasn't taken something else out in the process.

Lick the circuit board again. If the capacitor has vented it'll taste like cancer

ok, before reading any of these posts, i went out to check voltage on the halls.

oops, the neighbor borrowed it a couple days ago. ran over to get it. noted with a sigh that it was ON when his wife handed it to me...

so i check the halls, first for voltage across black/red. NOTHING! now that's odd. check both sides of connector. controller is hooked up and ON. weird.

well, i had fixed up lyen controller handy, and i was wanting to try it anyway. the board wasn't screwed in, but that shouldn't matter, just wanted to test it.

BOOM. UNGODLY LIGHT EMANATING FROM THE BOX. OR GODLY, actually:

i pulled it apart. no it wasn't my cap job. the board shorted against the case, making a nice hole in it.

ok, learned a lesson there. let's put that aside to mail to amberwolf.

now back to my halls. why aren't i getting voltage. the neighbor was checking AC. but i'd switched it back to DC. i wonder if i get voltage on the main pack.

BOOM. PLASMA WOOOHHHOOO!

no pain at all on the fingers, so technically not fried? would have been nasty if in direct line of shot tho!

so how did that happen??? i check for continuity across the poles. 1. nothing! i check voltage on a 12V batt. 0.00
IMG_20110309_184118.jpg

just opened the multimeter and it's toast too, even though it lights, reads 0.00 when on... nice.

Yes, but wife's headed to boston for work tomorrow at 6AM, so I've gotta hual the kids around in the cage (car), dashing about it what, 4" of rain, so i wasn't going to be able to ride the rest of the week anyway...

aww Greg!!

One thing buddy? you havent got that meter set on amps have you? remember Troy talking about checking battery voltage with a cheap Chinese meter that had no internal fuse when the meter was accidentally set to amps with the lead in the amp socket? just a thought as not sure what would do that ? also Greg were you turning the dial whilst the probes were connected to the supply? it looks like your meter shorted across the battery, the only way it could do this is if the meter were reading amps or you clicked through a resistance scale with it connected?, you have 80V there too, be careful too 80V and up can under the right circumstances hurt, I wouldnt suggest touching anything over 60V DC.

Good luck in getting it sorted out

I hate it when that happens

I have some Harbor Freight voltmeters around here. Think they were $4?

Which controller? New backup not?
