Helmet Hair ! and Women.

Got home last night, neighbors were sitting on the front porch, i went in the house, let the dog out.. grabbed a beer.. and went back out to join the conversation.

I noticed my neighbor's wife was snickering at something, so the ever curious type that i am, i ask what's so funny ?

she points out so elegantly " You got shark fins ! ".. yep.. helmet hair..

Now, understand that i'm 28 and balding quickly, so i have totally gone past the " Oh god.. my hair looks wrong " attitude.. i don't give a crap.

but this brings a good point, women will not wear a skull cap from fear of helmet head.. it's sad, but true, it's not the exercise factor, or the bicycle itself.. it's the helmet that's keeping women out of this sport..

I don't see it that way -- at least where I live, women cyclists seem more likely to wear a helmet than their male counterparts. In general, women, probably less concerned about machismo, tend to be more sensible about using safety precautions such as helmets and seatbelts.

I passed a lady last week pedaling along with her helmet dangling from her handlebars... i slowed down and asked " Protecting your handlebars ? " she replied " Hehe.. in case a cop stops me " i replied " He would probably give you a fine for the act itself.. but your head, your choice ! " and sped off.


The enthusiasts ( sp ? ) will wear their helmets and their spandex pants ( and god love those pants..as long as i'm not the one wearing them ) ..

It's the E-bike. or lets say less-than-top-physical-shpae , crowd, that i'm talking about . The casual cyclist.

there are 2 causes of helmet hair

you will get helmet hair if you have just washed your hair and not dried it yet. this is caused by the hair drying at different rates in and out of the helmet. -solution use a hair drier before you leave the house.

you will get helmet hair from just the weight of the helmet. this usually is not so bad, only noticeable with long hair. -solution carry a can of hair spray with you and use it at your destination to give volume.

women with long hair often only wash it every 3 days, ick! i don't know how that would affect it?

I get out of bed at 8:45am, and am sitting at my desk at 9:25am...

Head still wet with gel, speed dry on the way to work.. gives me the shark fin look !

Using the hairdryer for 10 minutes is a fair chunk of the battery charge, what a waste!

Waste heat from the motor/controller could be redirected into yer helmet.
