I've been searching a ton, reading the manual and just using trial and error to set up my CAV3 but maybe it's time to just ask for help...

My current (newb) setup: 29" Steel Commuter (Marin Muirwoods), MPII w/o controller, upgraded phase wires, Lyen 12 x 3077 controller, CAV3, 3 speed switch, throttle from Lyen, 2x 6s Multistar 16Ahr lipos in series (~48V). Yes I have a torque arm. Throttle is plugged into the CAV3, 3-spd switch and ebrake plugged into controller.

Currently have controller set to 50A battery to controller and 100A phase current.

Overall the speed is OK, now getting up to around 28mph on flats, but would love to improve acceleration.

The settings I'm tryng to figure out in the CAV3 are the:

-throttle out ramp values. CA says V/s, manual says s/V, higher values mean faster acceleration? does it mean the rate it goes to the max throttle out V, ~5V, or the max battery voltage ~48V? Is there a value that is too high?
-Difference between throttle out ramp and throttle fast ramp? Fast threshold (default = amps?)?
-Gain values for current and power max values. I vaguely understand that this is related to the speed at which the feedback loop responds when you max out current or power. I'm starting to feel the torque pulse a bit as I'm accelerating, which I assume is related to this. I dropped the values down to try and eliminate the pulsing but I still feel it. Maybe it's a phase thing? How is the value related to the ramp values?

I've wondered what the set up is like w/o the CAV3 so I've tried plugging the throttle into the controller, but the results are a ridiculously slow bike, even though I have the controller programmed aggressively... any idea what would cause this?

Thanks in advance for the insights!!

The settings I'm tryng to figure out in the CAV3 are the:

The CA originally used s/V and was revised to use V/s. The manual was revised accordingly.

The last Unofficial User Guide to use the s/V designation was version 3.0p5-f 2013.06.12.
Your Guide is two years old and out of date.

Please download the most recent Guide (3.0p6-l) and see if it addresses your questions. There have been many revisions throughout the document. Please note the new Chapter 3 that addresses matters such as legacy vs normal mode and controller 3-speed switches. If questions remain, posting to the CAv3 Beta thread is a good policy to ensure your inquiries have visibility.

Please download and flash the most recent firmware as well (3.0p10) to ensure that your CA behaves as described in the Guide.

In general, the CA should not be connected until the bike is running properly without it. Connect the throttle normally and disconnect the CA entirely. When the bike is running correctly and you have an operational baseline, you can pursue the installation and setup steps in the Guide. Failing to do this can complicate identification of performance difficulties as either controller or CA related.

Wow - huge oversight on my part. Thanks for the heads up (and the patience). Reading thru it now and it's addressing nearly all of my questions.

And BTW the cycle analyst is such a great tool with so much customization and well thought out controls. You've done an amazing job getting it to where it is today. So blown away by all the functionality!

Ya - that was actually a serendipitous question on your part - glad we found a way to get on the same page right away. :D

Just post up any questions that remain and I'm sure they can be resolved straightaway....
