While I've been having a lot of fun with my M1PS, it's extremely impractical for everyday errands and short-haul people moving. I'd been eyeing this HMP Lightning for a while now, though, which was looking highly practical. Originally was exposed to it from a few Area13 videos on the bike (1, 2, 3).

I'm lucky enough to be within spittin' distance of their shop in San Francisco, so I took a trip to meet the owner (Mike) and test drive the bike. I do not miss living in SF, lol! I got it around a few blocks and managed a little bit of speed, despite there being grid locked streets in the area. No issues on the test drive and I found myself more-or-less agreeing with the video reviews of the bike. Comfortable, good power, easy to control -- just a nice overall ride. Mike went over all the features and operations of the bike, but if you've watched the Area13 videos, you'll know pretty much all of this already.

I picked the 30Ah model in white -- I don't need the extra 15Ah for $600, most of my commuting will be very local and short trips. (And, besides, I might replace the battery with an NMC chemistry someday down the line.) They offered to assemble and deliver, which I took them up on. Showed up next day on the back of Mike's truck.

Overall, the visit, test drive, purchase, and delivery have been top notch. Very happy with how that all worked out. Communication has been prompt and effective.

Now, on to some of the downsides I've run into so far, because in the following three days some things have gone awry.

First, there is no manual with the bike. Second, there is no hazards button (all blinkers). Third, there is a 3way switch on the handle bar that...does nothing? Kinda odd. These are all pretty minor issues, but worth noting.

Registering it with the DMV as a motorcycle and getting insurance has worked, but it's definitely a little quirky. First, the VIN seems to be hit-or-miss. While it does show up with the NHTSA, Progressive (at least) couldn't find the moto with it. They did let me add the bike on to my policy, but it required some extra steps. As for the DMV, I went to a local satellite office, which was a novel experience -- and quick. They got me a temp registration, but pointed out that I didn't have the MCO signed and was missing a DMV form for transfer, plus missing a full Bill Of Sale. At the shop, we just did the purchase with, more-or-less, the website checkout flow. Thus, I have an email receipt, but that's not good enough for the DMV, nor does it establish ownership chain, which they are apparently more strict about these days. So, I'll need to get these forms to the store so they can sign them, get them back to me, and I can finalize the registration. Ultimately, it seems like it'll work out just fine, but do be ready to spend some time navigating the process -- and make sure you get a bill of sale and proper DMV transfer form with your purchase.

The most major problem so far, however, is a bit of a pain. The bike died on me at "55% Battery" reading on the dash. Voltmeter says it's at 70v when "dead". So I plugged in the charger, gave it a few hours to top up, charger stopped, at... 77v!? Numbers make zero sense; a typical LiFePO4 "72v" should be 24s, 2.5->3.65 range for a 60->87.6 range. Checking the charger, it's only putting out 82v at rest. Lot's of this doesn't add up.

When I contacted them about the battery issues, they replied quickly and have arranged to pickup the bike, get it back to their shop, investigate, and resolve the issue(s). So, a bit of a bummer, but it's not the end of the world and they are standing by their product and working to get it resolved quickly. If you bought this from further away, it could be more of a problem, though.

Regardless of the problems so far, my passengers are much happier on this bike, it's got a LOT of storage, and it is really nice to ride. I'm looking forward to it getting the battery issue straightened out and putting plenty of miles on it. I'll update here as things get resolved (or not? but I suspect it'll work out just fine).
 
This looks pretty identical to the one my local scooter shop just gave to me to play with. Mine was made 4-5 years ago, branded "Zoom," looks like Walmart sold it for a time.

Have you actually looked at the batteries? Are you sure they're Li-ion or LFP? Because the one I got came with heavy lead acid.

Relatively certain. I didn't open the battery case itself, but I did take a peak under the plastics to find it labeled as LFP 72v30ah and its size indicates (to me) that it wouldn't be large enough to be lead-acid and still be 30Ah. I won't be taking the scooter apart enough to weigh it, though, as it's well buried in there, so I guess it could all be a very clever ruse, but I sorta doubt it. Miles of range will tell once, ya know, the voltage range is fixed to something sensible.

Maybe it's the 3 speed mode switch? It comes locked to 30 mph max per their video. Did you unlock it?
It's not -- there is a push button switch which cycles through the modes (1,2,3,12,3,etc) on each push. It would make a better speed switch, imo, and then the push button could be a reverse, cruise control, or something else, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything. It's on my list of "small questions" to ask when I get a chance.
 
Dang! They picked it up, took it back, swapped out the battery (error in the old one's BMS config, apparently), and brought it back the same day. Absolutely stellar.

I'll give it a range test tomorrow.
 
I also found out what the extra 3 way switch would be -- in other markets, it controls the lights: off, drl, drl+low. In the US market, mopeds are, apparently, required to have DRL and low on all the time, so only the high on/off switch on the left still works, but the 3way on the right side is just disconnected/deprogrammed.

As for the missing hazard -- they know, but their hands are a bit tied on not having a button they can repurpose for it. Honestly, not the end of the world, but there's always constraints.

Was also informed that the battery is a 22s configuration.

The battery issue, I've been told, isn't 100% resolved on this replaced battery. They are missing the dongle to program the battery bms, so it's likely going to experience some of the same issues, but hopefully at a wider voltage range than the previous pack. Once they've got the replacement interface, they'll drop by and get the battery reprogrammed correctly which should 100% resolve the upper/lower bounds.
 
My recomendation was to take the 3way on the right and make that the speed selector and convert the current "push to cycle modes" button into a "hold for reverse" instead. Something the big heavy scooter is missing, imo.

Updates:

After getting the scoot back and letting it charge overnight, it now won't come out of Park mode. Usually boots into park, then if the kickstand is up and you engage/release the brakes, it goes into driving mode. Whelp, no amount of fiddling gets it out of park mode now. No idea what is going on.

Having worked so much with Phaserunners, VESC, and FarDrivers -- bespoke, zero insight PEV's are significantly frustrating since I'm basically just...stuck. Ugh.

Comes with an MCO and Bill of Sale; those are enough to get it registered.

That's going to be location dependent. It does come in a "low power" mode (30mph max) which qualifies it in many places as a moped. In some places mopeds don't require anything, other places you'll need an M1, insurance, and reg.

Since I have it in 50mph mode, I'm getting it registered and insured as a motorcycle.
 
I got mine registered as a moped in Michigan. In Michigan, if it's a moped (less than 30mph, no need to shift gears), you need a moped tag, but no insurance, no title, no registration, and you're not even required to have a motorcycle license.
 
I'm warming up to it. Don't leave my neighborhood anymore or go shopping. once in a while to the bank or convince store. That is about the same money as my Old Etrike.
 
I've now put about 50m on the scooter and things are going pretty well. I'll set aside the outstanding BMS issue, I'm enjoying it.

My passengers have even complimented it as a nice upgrade, so that's a big win. For scooting around on errands it's been working out great.

I will say, though, the cruise control (cc) on this is baaaaad.

First, the control loop in the controller to maintain the cc mph speed is hunting around a lot. It's subtle, but you can absolutely feel amps pushed and pulled as it hovers around.

The bigger issue is that activating it is...totally random. In theory, it's activated by some knowledge of throttle position, or hold speed, and time at that level or something -- there's no button for it. In reality, I can't figure out what triggers it at all.

Sometimes I'll be holding stead on the throttle and cruising at N mph for well over 10 seconds, let off, and nope, not in cc. Sometimes I'll be accelerating hard, full throttle pull, clearly still gaining speed and the amps to the motor just drop out of existence and now I'm in cc at some random number like 19mph. (It's fun to have all the torque ripped away unexpectedly!)

I plan to find out if this can just be turned off, it's so bad. Honestly, I don't even know why it was turned on in the first place. CC is legit for highway driving, long continuous expanses of road, etc -- this is a gosh dang moped for stop-and-go city commuting. CC has no place here.
 
Got the registration through, got a plate and...it doesn't fit! The plate mounting holes are just a smidge too wide for the CA plate. Nice.

So I printed up a little adapter, tossed in some M5 heatset inserts and it's all sorted now. Annoying, though.

The cruise control should be switchable somehow. You might need to reprogram the controller to do it though.
Some models have a jumper wire you can use.

What does it have for a controller?
 
I couldn't find any kind of operator manual on their website. Do you have the instructions?
There might be a hidden programming mode. Some really cheap controllers have a jumper wire you can disconnect.
 
Heard back about the cruise control -- unfortunately (and as I suspected) it's just part-and-parcel of the controller and there isn't a way to turn it off.

On the bright side, I got some advice on how I can integrate my GPS system into the scooter. They have their own add-on GPS tracker which has a dedicated lead in the front panel area. It also has a nicely placed shelf to keep the GPS unit secure and pointed at the sky, which is a nice extra.

Since I didn't have the 6 pin connector, I just snipped off the moulded plug and exposed the raw wires. Much to my surprise (as many of the color coding of wires in this bike build are NOT what you'd expect) in this rare case, everything actually made sense!

Black/red/orange were the expected Ground, 72v constant, and 72v acc on. Thus, I can plug my tracker right into those easy-peasy. No idea what the other 3 wires are for. I'm guessing the RS482 comms that they mentioned the controller uses and maybe the last one is a relay trigger. (Some GPS, including mine, will accept a text message to send power over the yellow wire so you can turn on a relay, a relay that would then disable the throttle or something like that. A remote kill switch.)

Regardless, I didn't feel the need to utilize those so I just trimmed them and taped them up.

A few zip ties to attach the GPS and bundle up the wires, and the panel went back on. Mission accomplished, GPS tracking achieved.

Did they tell you how the cruise control is supposed to work? There's usually some kind of sequence you need to do to engage or disengage.

22S LFP chargers are not to be found on aliexpress. Higher voltage LFP chargers are available in 21S then 24S with nothing in between.

Can you post a charger label photo?
