How do controllers work?

I think this has been covered elsewhere, but it might be nice to have a dedicated thread for it.

Can someone explain the output of controllers in terms of voltage, amperage, PWM, and throttle position? Thanks.

Man, I've learned so much about controller in my e-vehicle-simulator development attempts. I could type it all out here, but the link above should suit you fine.

Motor: I want all the power I can get.

Battery: No problemo, take it all... Even if it kills us both. :(

Controller: I'll let Battery give Motor as much as the Throttle tells me to, up to my limit; which is is usually based on Battery's current. And just enough for Motor to handle...

Motor: I want more current than your pansy limit.

Controller: Sure, I can give you heaps of current, but chopped in small pieces, so the current drawn from Battery is within the limit... We don't want your dainty windings to turn black and smell up the place. :p

Motor: Listen, Jerk. I'm an Inductor - I still carry current when you cutoff my supply; I'll ram it back at ya. :x

Controller: Really.... You do that. I've got these extra FETs here that will just send it back into your windings as continued current... HAPPY?? :p :p

Throttle: Let's slow down. Give Motor half-power. :!:

Controller: OK. Again, I'll give Motor all the current, but only half of the time... Motor will sorta average it out to half voltage, 'cause he's Mister-Big-Ass-Inductor. That should help cool his greedy butt.

Battery: Half the average voltage for Motor means half the current that I need to deliver... I'll sag a bit less.

Motor: I want a bigger controller, for more power!

Controller: I have a Big-Brother that will happily roast your nuts by the fire... but that would still be up to the throttle.

Throttle: Even I have a boss... he's one of those meatbags with little restraint. If he brings in Big-Brother, there's no telling who will survive.

I love a story that ends......to be continued.

Not trying to dumb-it-down, mind you... just trying an approach to communicate some basics, the way I can understand them. (Hopefully not too misleading... There are significant points that should be added / refined.)

I would love it if you dumbed down the Cycle Analyst manual for the lay person. Every time I try to mess with the advanced/limiting settings and read the manual to try to figure it out, my eyes glaze over. The manual needs examples of what happens if you do this and this and this...or a metaphor of some sort.
