How Many in the USA REALLY commute by bicycle?

They are getting into the bike thing in Jakarta :D

You must have more commuters there in Phoenix then AW. In the daytime, the bike racks at stores are always empty if they even exist. But go to wallmart very early before the night shift of stockers gets off and the bike rack is stuffed. Three guesses who gets paid the least, stockers or cashiers that work the day shift. The stockers are mostly men too, and don't feel as vulnerable out there on a bike as the ladies.

I too have noticed that the Walmart bike racks are often used primarily by Walmart employees. One Walmart near me even has bike lockers for the employees. Of course, the employee almost always is riding a bike bought at Walmart and seems to often use really bad locks (rarely U-locks).

I also think you're onto something about the men vs. women commuting by bike. Back when I was actually a college student I knew several women who didn't bike at night anywhere or even during the day to distant parts of town if they could drive a car or get a car ride instead. It was a very low crime town and I and other guys never thought twice about biking darkened streets, parking lots or bike trails at night. Men rarely think about safety like women and I must admit that it took me a long time to realize that I took things for granted that women did not.
