How much power does the controller feed the motor?

If i have a 1000watt controller and a 350 watt motor, wouldnt the motor pull just what it needs from the controller? Or the controller will force the motor to take in the full 1000watts?

The motor will pull what it needs...but it's not restricted by it's "wattage rating", only by the load placed on it.

So at startup from a stop for at least a moment, it'll draw whatever the controller will allow.

If you rode up a long and steep enough hill with enough weight, it could draw enough power long enough to cook the motor.

The controller is what controls the power. Motor ratings are a bit more ambiguous.

Ok you mention steep hills. What gives the motor torque? Is it the amount of winding or the size of the copper used for the winding? How can i find out if a motor has more torque than the other?
