How to tell if BBSHD controller is bad/fried?

Ok, installed brand new BBSHD kit with 860c display.
Display powers on and reads the battery voltage and acts normally.

The 30H communication error pops up after like 10 seconds.

I think everything was working originally.

I hooked my phone up to motor via serial cable. I opened the Speeed app and was able to connect to motor no problem.
I could read from the motor.

I changed the PAS settings.
When I went to write those new settings to the motor I got an error that the app could not connect.

No matter what I did I could not get it to reconnect.

I switched to my laptop and the Open Bafang Tool and could not connect.

I bought a new harness and programming cable and tried the same again.
No joy.

This is a brand new setup?

It seems to ne now that the problem has to be with the motor controller.

How can I check if the controller is bad?

I really don't want to replace it willy-nilly as it looks like a PITA and its over $100.

I don't know what else to try.

Help please.
 
Make sure the pins in your display harness connector are not bent or broken. The one time I had a similar problem that is what it was.
 
Hi, and thanks for replying.
I changed out the harness for new.
The pins from the display cable itself appear fine.
I'm connecting straight to the motor with a new programming cable.

I guess what's throwing me was that originally I connected just fine with my phone running Android 16 and the speeed app.
I didn't disconnect or reconnect anything.
Then when I tried to write the new PAS values to the motor I got this error.

This is making me think that somehow I fried the controllers Tx/Rx capabilities...?

Arrrgh, so aggravating....so close, but yet so far...

The last few times I programmed with the speed app it seemed buggie not staying connected was the main issue. I have not heard of anyone killing a controller with it , if you try to update the firmware and do something wrong l think you can kill the controller.
 
Ok, I've done some research on how to upgrade the BBSHD firmware. It looks like everyone is using the STC tool. But there apoear to be different versions of firmware. Daniel Nielsen's seems to be popular. Then different videos are using different values for max baud rate, IRC frequency, etc.

Guess I'm kinda slow cause I'm more than a bit confused.

Can someone please point me to a video or webpage that explains the exact process like I'm a 5 yr old?
Especially the whole turning the battery off/on?

I'd really appreciate it.

I guess that if this process doesn't work then I have somehow damaged the controllers Tx/Rx abilities?

well.... it didn't exactly work... using version 6.96S of STC tool I was able to connect to the motor and successfully loaded up the Daniel Nielson firmware, bbs-fw.hex. The process went smoothly with no errors. I turned off the battery and hooked my 860c display back up. Turned on the battery and....error 30H communication error....poop.

Then I tried to use the Nielson config tool, BBS-FW-Tool to program the motor and it also could not connect?
Then I tried the Open Bafang Tool and it also could not connect?

Any ideas?
