Hub motor recommendation

Hello,
I am about to order a Trident FAT Trekker NON-electric trike! I would like to convert it with a 1500 watt (prox) direct drive rear hub motor with 190mm dropouts. I have emailed with Grin and searched the internet without success. Can anyone recommend a high quality/reliable motor.

It looks like that is an off road trike so why not consider a BBSHD to take advantage of the gears?

BBS02 in the video so a 1500W BBSHD could also fit.

Good suggestion, thank you for taking the time send the video. Now I know that the mid-drive won’t interfere with the fold, good news since that may be what I end up with. The BBSHD probably makes the most sense in this case. I had one on my wife’s trike, but didn’t like I t as much as the DD’s that are on our delta frames bikes. I know the mid is much better in many ways, but we live in very hilly area which requires lots of down and up shifting with the mid which I find noisy and annoying.Thanks again for the help! Problem with a hub motor in such a large rear wheel and slow (off road?) uphill riding is overheating the motor. So if you really want a hub motor you're better of with a larger/wider one then needed for the speed you're after. Search for "Fat bike hub motor" to find one.

Also check that the number of spokes of the rim and hub motor match when only ordering the motor to lace yourself (fat bike often 32H and motor 36H)

fat tires on the front are no good for high speed and they want to bounce around when cornering, causing the steering to kick back into your hands, what about a gmac from grin laced into their weissman fat tire rim with the dual gauge spokes and a baserunner controller ( if it has virtual electronic freewheel) or the phaserunner has that feature

I am very Close to settling on a BBSHD mid, but I’ll check out your recommendations. The Gmac is geared and I’d prefer a DD. Can you comment on the noise level of the fast wound one, I think it’s the 10T? Also, I’m looking for a minimum speed of 25MPH even though I usually average about 15. I ride almost exclusively bumpy dirt road and have spine problems so it’s go FAT or go slow!

i broke a chain on my trike today and was very happy i have a DD :lol: had to buy 3 bike chains and 2 tools for more than $100 bill to get the 11 feet of chain i need. not sure id be going 4x4ing with a mid drive on a trike with big fat tires

i have the mxus xf40 made for Grin running at 2000 watts. i think it was what Grins website called the 3005rc or 3007rc, im in a 20 inch wheel so i got the high speed 11rpm/v. its a fast trike that does 70km/h but its no good for the snow. youll probably need 3000 watts

Not necessarily, but with 1500W or less, it had better be a pretty slow winding to do snow riding.

OP didn't say he'd be riding in snow, though. If the trike has fat tires only for cosmetic purposes, like most, then 1500W should be fine.

im running 20 inch wheels, not big fat tires. its probably a whole different experience with 26x4.0, itll probably float like a big old cadillac flying down the hwy
