Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

ok, that seems like Darwin way :-D...what about the spokes specifications to fit an us crystalyte ? plz

Using 3mm Spokes (about 10Gauge) with 16mm long nipples, lacing a 54XX hub motor (254mm) to a 19" MC rim requires a length of 127mm, the 17" is 102mm using 1X lace pattern. Spokes have simple 90degree "L" bends wide enough to clear the flange.

Sine of the times

350 phase amp sine wave controller. Should go nicely :)
Now I've just gotta find time to test and fit it to one of my rides :|
She's a biggen, but small compared to my chinese 'stuffed bra' 36 fet.

What is that? Small car / golf cart controller?
Was listening to that ebike podcast with you n Greg today. Entertaining and interesting hearing how it all progressed from dse kits to hyena industries;)
what was that shop you referred to that had military electronics? That sounds like a gold mine!
Swap laser for xt laptop 8) nice

Hey man,
Can you calculate your rpm/volt for your 4065? Or at the very least your kph at a given figure with the circumference of your wheel?
My trip home tonight yielded a lower than usual top speed on flat (33mph) and even lower usual speed going up hills.
Thanks in advance.

E-scooter largely.

wow I'd totally forgotten about that, that was ages ago! :)
Yeah that XT laptop was pretty funny, I guess it was old tech back then hence getting it cheap. I should have kept it retrofitted it with a raspberry pi :p

Oatley electronics. They dont seem to have much/any of that sort of stuff any more though unfortunately. They have been doing some low powered ebike gear though for a few years. Nothing too exciting though

My bike is in pieces but I'll try and remember next time I'm in the workshop. If you're losing speed then that's another issue irrespective of what I'm doing.
Voltage sag ? dud cell ? Flat tyres ?

No need to check anymore, I found the problem. Thanks for the offer. Turns out, the maxV pot in my throttle tamer needed some adjusting. Don't know how or why though :? . Happy I didn't overheat the motor though, thats a relief. Don't know how I would have overheated it in the first place anyway since you dumped 3 times more power into yours.

There's also this gold mine:
http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com

(they're actually here in the valley but they *only* do internet orders; I can't go down there and buy something--I would have to order it and have it shipped to me, so I don't buy from them because that's silly).

Haha yeah it's a cool add. As soon as I saw it on tv last week I thought "damn I need to capture that in HD for one of my vids" :p

You see everyone, hyenas hooning on bikes is a known phenomenon

In build related news I've been a bit quiet lately, laid up with my busted wrist. But it's on the mend and I have 2 projects up and running shortly. One my new blingin commuter and the other the scooter motor on my stealth. I got it back yesterday with the axles machined so now I just need 16mm torque arms

Today is the day big fella :)
Well, I'm not really ready to be back riding yet but I have a removable plastic splint on now so I got out for a sneaky ride this afternoon. No jumps, yanking on the bars or rough offroading/ hard turning technical stuff for a while but for casual rides I can start to get back into it. I can only manage half a throttle rotation with my wrist still semi-immobilized, which is probably a good thing. It was a top day today, uncharacteristically hot and sunny for this time of year so I ventured out to the hardware shop to get some paint for another build and decided to detour via one of my usual haunts in the national park. I noticed that a big mound of dirt and associated jumps that the local kids frequent on their BMXs had been bulldozed and bits of trees strategically strewn around the place to stop riding. Point taken...
Then around the corner stood a pile of bricks where an old half fallen down house had stood for probably 100 years. It and a large chunk of the surrounding area had always been fenced off so I could never get in there before but I guess the local punks had as you could always see from a distance that everything was covered in graffiti. With large gates now left open from the recent bulldozers I went in for a peak and found a huge abandoned hanger type shed with all these olds tram, trains and buses. It was so atmospheric in there - all the old derelict equipment, rusted, smashed up, covered in graffiti, beams of light shining through rusted through holes in the old roof. The camera on my new phone is pretty sweet (samsung galaxy S4) but it couldnt do the place justice in the low light. I'm going to head back there tomorrow with my SLR. Given the fresh bulldozer tracks in the mud and the fact they've left the gates to this compound wide open I'd say this place is soon to be demolished. A shame, it'd make an awesome movie set, and it looks like something straight out of an FPS video game.

Oh, and when I did finally make it to the hardware store I saw a highway patrol cop set up on the side of the road with his radar gun pointed at me. I spotted him a fair way back so pedalled past at 25km/hr (on my fighter). As I got level he called out "23!" I laughed and game him a thumbs up and continued on. I dont know if he recognised it was electric, I had my full face helmet and gloves on, but he may have just figured it was a DH MTB. If I had of had the gopro I would have pulled up for a chat and seen how friendly he was towards electrics and sussed him out for a fly by :p

Those pics are surreal Jay, in away it looks like something form a parallel universe where civilization took nose dive. Yah, you should have gotten on the gas for the cop. He should have yelled out "83!" Of course, there is the chance he may have not been amused by a fast flyby. So, the hipowered project, any news?

Yeah Rix, it reminded me of half life 2, if you've seen/played that.

Thanks Nechaus, I had the same thought, which is why I went back today with my DSLR and tripod. It was pretty dark but I got some great shots with long exposures

I think I have a new favourite pic of my fighter :)
This little image doesn't do it justice, it looks great on a 24" screen at full res

Oh and because I'm a bit of a geek, along with my DSLR and tripod I also took the gopro and a couple of props as well :p Yeah, I've been playing video games too long. And watching too many freddiew and corridordigital vids on youtube
Anyone wanna see FPS Hyena if I edit a little something together ?
It'd be great to head back with a few mates and shoot an action sequence in there.

cool pics, make use of it while you can I say. i was interested in the tram history of sydney after seeing that and aparently there where 1600 trams running in its peak in 1930s. I had no idea. and the ones in that shed thing look like the origional ones from back then.
hows the new bike going jay? Im keenly awaiting the results of the scooter controller and motor.

Beautiful in an eerie kind of way. I saved the pic of your fighter, its now my screen saver, until I get something to top it. Short of a Volcano eruption, not going to hold my breath.

Pen D' poises an excellent question. I need to talk to you about that in more detail, will PM you.

I want to see you do some Danny McAskill tram roof riding and stuff
haha no chance of that, half the stuff is rotten and rusted through, it'd be a rapid trip back to the hospital for more plaster!

Wow I didnt know there were that many either. There's a tram museum/depot/storage yard just up the road from this place that's publicly open and I imagine that's where the last of the better condition and restored ones are. There's also a small section of track through the bush with a tram that still operates on weekends just as a tourist ride/attraction. You'll probably seen it atleast the tracks in a few of my earlier vids.

Scooter gear still on hold for a little while. I can just ride but my wrist isnt up to wrestling on a moto tyre yet so I'll either cave and pay a motorbike shop to do it or just wait.
The axles are machined down now so technically I could slide it onto my fighter but I have no torque arms to fit so I couldn't give it full power, which is no fun!
In my wisdom I had 5mm extra taken off the axle on the freewheel side where it allowed, only the axle there is around 20mm thick so I need to made an even wider torque arm to clear that bit! That much meat hanging on in a long 10mm slot probably wouldn't be prone to tearing loose anyway though.
What I have been working on in the mean time is getting my new bling bling commuter up and running.
I'll start riding again next week so need wheels. I rebuilt my old commuter with a magic pie for my dad so currently have nothing working but the fighter, and it still has a wonky crank so I can't really pedal that properly to work.
I stripped down the bike this afternoon and have given it and the forks a coat of satin black. I'll give it another coat or 2 over the coming days and hopefully it'll be rolling by the weekend. These are the pimpin custom wheels.
The trials style drilling is really for show more than weight saving given they're 2" wide but hopefully the finished product looks good and not tacky. I think with the satin black and a few other select gold highlights it'll look nice without looking too over the top.

That photo is a cracker, I haven't been about much - industrial action at work has meant all hands on deck. But as Dos Equus man says, when I am at my desk - that picture is my desktop picture. :p
What a ripper mate.

What the flange diamter of your cro clone? 244mm is what I have been told the cromo is.

Yah, 1X would be a cinch on this hub/rim combo. I think I got a spare rim with the right size spokes cut for a 1x on this. Provided the flange is 244mm like the cromo.

Jay, can you post some pics of your geared "commuter" when its finished? Would like to see those bling bling wheels on it.

Hey, Ghost rider, those gold rims really are super pimpin' , they are so "fully sick" that no amount of hospital stay can possibly fix the awesomeness permeating/radiating from said rims , love em :)

May I humbly enquire where another fellow ebike enthusiast may purchase such items ?

On the subject of those trams in a warehouse pics, incredible, visual overload ..... congrats, good find

cheers mate

Cheers mate, I'm happy to be decorating your desktop. I don't always take good pictures, but when I do people use them as wallpapers.
That pic along with one I posted a while back at a mates farm with the old car half in the river (in sepia) are going to end up on canvas in my office. I just need one more to complete the series with the theme of the new tech ebike with decaying old tech.

Damn I should have added a subliminal watermark promoting hyena industries :p
Sorry I dont know the flange diameter off the top of my head, I'll measure for you when I get home if I can remember. I'm quite confident it'll be the same as the cromo though. When the chinese are mass producing these things they dont tend to change things much.
And yeah Ken, a single cross pattern would have been better and would definately be doable especially with the moto rims and their angled nipple holes. That's how it came to me though and I guess when I didnt specify they took shortcuts. They were actually going to send me a 16" rim originally and then I specified 19" - makes me wonder if the 16" spokes just happened to fit radially. Some are actually a tad long and protrude 1mm or so pack the back of the nipple. Sounds like a chinese way of doing things to me! You'd think they'd go to extra effort to produce a good product when someone asks for a sample of something with the intention to buy more but this is often not the case.

haha thanks mate. I wasn't sure how they'd look when I ordered them. I was flicking through a dirt bike mag a while back while waiting in a barber and saw an add for similar drilled trials bike moto rims and thought they looked pretty cool. Likewise I've seen a few motos that are black with gold rims and they look pretty good so I thought I'd take a chance. Not as "ethnic spec" as they sound on paper

Unfortunately these are not commonly available and very hard to come by. I actually had them made by a rim factory in china as samples along with a number of other rims. They were reluctant to do them in such a small run but obliged because I ordered a heap of their different types. Unfortunately they're all gone now bar a number of 24" 45mm wide black sets that I had made with the intention of lacing up high powered motors to.
I'm not sure if I could get more, normally they want minimum orders of 100 rims so I'm not sure if I could get away with asking for a second sample lot...
I ordered 20 last time and the air shipping was pretty steep. But a number of them were pre ordered for custom builds (like the 3" fatties for aussie jesters latest cruiser and 2 other blokes who aren't on ES)
