Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

Jay, that thing gotta be good for 99MPH.
Close mate, I just spun her up properly with teh axle nuts on this time :p and it still crapped out at ~80 but I could hear from the RPM it had atleast 85 in it, probably 90 with a full charge (it was only half charged after my last ride)

Still no idea what winding it is, there's no markings on it.

Anyway it's close to midnight here now but I need to get a test ride in. I took her for a spin and I was pleasantly surprised that it leapt off the line with good torque, something I wasnt expecting from something with such a high top speed. It started to go wonky and developed a hall timing like stutter around 55km/hr though. I reluctantly powered through it and it seemed to go away and then come back again a bit around 80. Down a slight grade I found it actually accelerated smoothly and then realised it may have actually been the CA causing it to cut out as it was maxing out the 100a progammed current limit. I actually ran out of road before I could get it a proper test but recorded a top speed of 95km/hr with still a little in it. Pulling 100 amps on old lipo that wasn't fully charged (4.1v/cell) made for a heap of sag but it still turned out a good result. I'm confident it'll do 100 on the knocker with a full charge or better still fresher batteries.
I'm keen to try the whopping big 36 fet padded bra controller with it, and also my new sine way one.

Here's the CA stats - my 5 minute blast up and down the back streets used the same AH that I use on my 16km commute to work with a geared motor.

And a video of the batshit motor (tm) freewheeling.

I'm meeting up with t3sla tomorrow for shenanigans so I'll get him to video a flyby for me

yeah man! loving the recent progress. looks like your riding a motivation wave atm, (it comes in waves with me so thats how i see it).
BTW I want to say thanks for getting me onto LIPO with the hadron kit, i was the only one out on the glow worm ride with LiPo i realised when i got back and kinda made me realise that its serious business, but i couldn't imagine running anything less now.
Keep up the good work Jay :)

Then fly to the States and do a flyby for LFP :?:

Harhar! JK

WTF? you were pulling 80+MPH off of 68 volts   . That is one very high speed wind. My 5403 at 80v is good for 75MPH, the 5404 is good for 66MPH. I don't know what your wind is, but let me tell you what it isn't, the standard 4 turn wind coming on the Cromos from Greyborg. Neither the V1 or V2 can do what that motor does. And yah, I am surprised it had good torque off the line. Very fast though. Could you imagine 24s running 100ah? Got be good for an easy 60+MPH on the flat.

Get that wheel true man.
Looks like you got a decent motor there mate.
How large is the stator, 50mm?

haha t3sla posting from live on set!
Great day today guys, big thanks to Sokol and T3sla for being good sport bad guys, letting me kill them over and over and putting up with me being an asshole director :p Hopefully you're not too sore Sokol from your scripted and more specifically unscripted crash! It actually came out well on my rear facing camera so I'll make use of your misfortune and dub in a gunshot, making out I shot you off the bike :p

I had a quick look at the rest of the footage and most looks great. Unfortunately the stationary slr stuff isnt real sharp due to the tricky focus on the bloody thing. The purposely in and out of focus stuff looks good though.

Trackman, 45mm stator. I thought it was 50mm but that was a surprise freeby from my chinese friends...
I have a 50mm one here as well to play with later.
Oh and wheel isnt really that out of true, it's just not sitting central in the drops (keeps wanting to pull to one side for some reason) and was actually slickly clipping/rubbing on the swing arm.

Here's a high speed pass shot of the new batshit fighter. Top speed clocked on a full charge was just on 100km/hr, I'm only about 90km/hr in this clip as we'd been out shooting and riding all day and this was on the way home.
I'm tempted to throw on my 6S booster pack to counter the voltage sag but I suspect it'll be even more batshit on 90v. I guess I'll have to take it out at some stage though to clock a fast pass on camera and show the CA.

OK... Since everyone will soon see my acrobatics, I figured I may as well sign up on ES, after lurking around for years!

Mr Hyena & Tesla - thankyou for a great day - great company, nice weather, awesome location and some very cool bikes! :D

I'll post some photos from during the shoot once I figure out how this board works...

Almost sounds like a tie fighter passing by

Just reviewing more footage, looks like the last segment of stuff where I was shooting you guys around the fighter didnt turn out :( :(
The gopro shifted down and I missed all the main kill shots. ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH :x

Oh man, so many good shots ruined. I should have kept my phone out to live preview the shots. DAMN IT

Ah crap... sorry... But I won't be doing a retake until my wounds heal!! ;)

Go speed racer go!!!! That was fast Jay. Can't wait to see the movie. Yesterday I went to Reno and low and behold, the world's rib cook off was swinging in full affect. So naturally I went to the Sydney stand and ate 14 bucks worth of ribs and drank 3 liters of Jalapeno beer. Had to hang out for several more hours before I was Okay to drive home. Anyway it was the first time I had seen the sun and blue sky in the last 2 weeks. Wind changed and blew the Yosemite fire smoke to the west. Sydney was represented proudly by these guys.

Filming...

Gotta say it was a fun morning with Hyena & T3sla... Despite a few mishaps (pretty much just mine actually). Highlight for me was riding the Batshit Stealth... (Is that even it's name?!)

That's funny cos here in Sydney we prefer American ribs...not too sure about the Jalapeño beer though :D

That sure was fast...one of the quickest ever I'd say  Nice work Jay !!!

Yeah I was just thinking that! I'm not sure what Aussie / Sydney ribs actually are! If you come to my house I can tell you my missus cooks them with BBQ plum sauce but that's about the extent of my knowledge. And jalapeno beer... hmmm, sounds like a good ploy to get you to drink more of it. If you knocked back 3 litres of it it sounds like it worked! I had an assortment of funny beers when I was in London a few years back. The grapefruit one sticks in my mind!

Cheers mate. It's certainly the fastest stealth around. I think doctorbass holds the record for the fastest proper bicycle at 106 km/hr, though John in CR has some scooter hubs doing some silly speeds. I'm going to exclude them though because they use 10-12" wheels which don't really qualify as a a bicycle :p
I nudged 98.7 today on a slight downhill stretch of highway sagging to 61v. I really need plug in my 6S booster pack and do a run at 80v for a video. That'll take care of reaching that pesky 3rd digit on the speedo

Needless to say, even as it is now it's too fast. The bike feels solid enough but at 100km/hr you're cutting through alot of air. Aside from the heap of wind noise, on a bike that weighs only a shade over 40kg it's just plain sketchy. I guess it's really only the weight difference between that and a motorcycle, but if feels like it could take off if it had wings
I think I'll replace it down the track with a slightly slower wind. Something that does 70-80km/hr is ideal IMO. Most of the time you'd be doing 50 or under but that burst of midrange torque up to say 65-70 is killer.

I agree I would take 30% torquier but I don't want the 30% past 70km/h ...so how would you range it vs the HS4065 ? torquier or not from 0 to 70km/h ? how does it pull ? is there a lot of torque @low speed or does it kick your ass from 40km/h for exempe ?

more more more plz

Hard to say, it's not running ideally out of the box and needs some fiddling with the controller programming. It pulls well off the line up to about 50km/hr then develops a hall like shudder but not quite as bad. It's more of a hesitation. The H4080 does it a little too, but not as much. If you keep powering through it it disappears by the low 60s and then pulls well up until about 80 then starts to do it again then gets over it. I thought it was the CA limiting to 100a at first but I turned the current down to 80a today and it still does it. It IS to do with the load though as it accelerates smoothly down a grade (gradual, not a steep hill) under power.
It is maxing out my controller current limit most of the time under acceleration so running a bigger unit would probably go a long way towards sorting it out. My 350a phase current sine way controller I have sitting here would be ideal.

As for the torque vs other motors, it's similar but again hard to compare because of how fast it is. I think the H4060/65 on 24S has a bit better torque but then it tops out just over 70km/hr. On the same voltage as this motor it only does around 50 so expecting them to be the same when the other has twice the top speed isn't really reasonable.
It's probably more comparable to the H4080 on 18S, but with the extra top end. And it's certainly not very efficient when you're blasting around pulling 100 amps all the time, it's an electron guzzler :p
I reckon it'd go well on a light motorcycle in a 16" rim with a 100a controller and say a 40ah 72v battery. That's probably what it's designed for.
It'd also be perfect as a mid drive.

As for my "blockbuster", don't hype it too much guys :p
We got some good footage but a chunk of it didn't turn out. I'm in 2 minds whether to just edit what I have or go back and shoot some more and re-do the shots that didnt turn out or were lost.
I learned alot from this first outing shooting with others and if nothing else I had fun.
But if I do re-shoot some of the main issues are:
- review each shot before moving on. I did this initially but then the live preview from my gopro to my phone started playing up so I gave it a miss and assumed the subsequent alignment would be OK because the earlier shots were. I guess having someone else watching live preview footage as I went and being the director would have been ideal. Serious business :p
- my DSLR only records in 5 minute intervals then goes back on pause. I lost 2 shots to this when I started recording in the distance (due to the long lens) then ran back and chatted with the guys abit
- the DSLR focus is very touchy and a lack of any sort of autofocus in video mode makes life tough. What looks sharp on the screen came out quite soft in a few shots. The depth field type shots look good for effect but my current setup isnt ideal for wide or moving shots.
- The chest mount, even up high isnt ideal for some of the FPS stuff. While easier for me to see and move around alot of the shots where I raised the gun up to aim or put the laser dot on my targets was ruined because you end up with just a shot of the side of the gun and my arm. Again see above about reviewing shots as you go. The helmet / face mounted version from my first vid while essentially made it like walking around with one eye shut gave a better perspective.
- Running 2 bright LED torches for lighting seemed like a good idea at the time but was often too bright in the footage and kinda killed some of the mood of the place.
- I forgot to set up and take stationary shots inside the shed. Doh.

Thanks for the behind the scenes shots Sokol.I didnt even realise you were taking them. And thanks to t3sla for growing a beard that morning so he could be a more convincing bad guy :p When I asked him that morning if he had bought any props he said "well, I have a beard so you can racially profile me"

I'll take a few preview screen shots :)

Teaser screen shots :)
I should point out that the basic story is that these baddies on ebikes have stolen the new hyena industries prototype bike and I'm on a mission to get it back.

Damn Jay, those teaser shots make me want to fly down and be a part of the next one. How cool. Cant wait to see the movie. Whats it called, E Road Warrior? Or "The Heyenator?" A fast ebike builder sent back in time to fix slow SLA Powered heavy as hell ebikes and to restore happiness to the universe. What ever it is, I chompin at the bit waiting :D . I think your motor is a fast wind. Call it a hunch. Probably good for 35-40MPH on 52 Volts  . Maybe the hot setup would be 12-14S at 300 amps continues, that will help with torque thrust issues a little.

That's funny cos here in Sydney we prefer American ribs...not too sure about the Jalapeño beer though :D

American ribs in Australia? We have the "Outback Steak House" here in the states, What do you guys have down under, "American Steak House?" The Jalapeno beer is the best I have ever had. Its basically a craft brewed Pilsner with fresh Jalapeno and chili peppers added during fermentation. Its called the Chili Beso or kiss of the chili in Spanish and made my the Great Basin Brewery in Sparks Nevada. The grapefruit beer Jay tried in London sounds interesting.

It's all about the chase scene

I feel the teaser shots have done their job at making the film look better than it actually is. haha
To do it justice I think I really need to hang off and collect some more footage. I've got some good shots but not enough to make a proper job of it. Obviously the whole thing is highly amateur so the acting and video work will probably make a B grade porn flick look good, but hey, I wanted to try something different.

heh I hadnt given it any though actually. What ever it is, I chompin at the bit waiting :D .

No hunches necessary, there's no question it's a fast wind! I gave my old man his bike yesterday as a fathers day present (t3sla you'll be pleased to know I fitted new brakes front and rear before handing it over) so had nothing to ride to work this morning so decided to take the fighter sans rear brakes and chain. I gave it a hit a few times pulling some big speeds but still only used 6ah getting to work which is the same as I used to get from my 9C commuter so that's not bad. (4060 uses about 4.5ah, geared motor around 4 or just under for the 16km trip)
The stuttering around 50 is very annoying. It's quite smooth up until the high 40s and then starts playing up. And the lighter you go on the throttle the worse it is. If you go WOT and power through it the stuttering is more minor. That's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it

Maybe the hot setup would be 12-14S at 300 amps continues, that will help with torque thrust issues a little
Yeah definately at ~48v it'd be more well behaved. Even 200 amps would probably be heaps. And it doesn't need to be continuous unless you're trying to maintain highway speeds. Cruising along at sensible speeds it happily draws sub 20 amps

We have the "Outback Steak House" here in the states, What do you guys have down under, "American Steak House?"
We have McDonalds :p
I dunno about elsewhere but around Sydney we used to have a few themed places like Lone Star and Arizonas. American / wild west saloon type joints - all timbery, dimly lit, cowboy type stuff decorating the place (so like the place we had lunch just out of Yosemite, but as a commercial chain) The one near my place is gone now but 15 years ago used to hand you a bucket of peanuts when you walk in and the floors would be littered in the shells that people would drop everywhere. They stopped doing it in more recent years though - probably OH&S issues.

With reality TV being what it is in the US, I think their could be a cult classic following to amatuer movies with great story plots. Short stuff like 20 minutes long or so. Well, I will beg buying a go pro here pretty quick, don't know shit about making or posting youtube vids, but unless I start and try, never will.
