Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

  Awesome Jay even though you never filmed it your description is so good I can imagine it anyway! ha ha brilliant, yes you must see if you can catch him again I would bet he is well pissed.

Be great to put the hub in to a real old ladies bike and pass him on that in a dress! cue AJ ha ha

I knocked off rather early yesterday, passed him about 3:45pm and he was wearing tradie clothes so chances are I won't normally see him on my return commute. I've gotta step up my lighting as it's dark come 5pm now and I need my visibility to be at maximum. The missus has banned me from riding in the dark but I'm hoping it'll ease her mind she sees me lit up like a xmas tree. I'm actually thinking I might make an "active" hi vis vest to wear - with high intensity red cree star leds across the shoulders. The 2 blinders(tm) I have at the moment are good but the extras up high should make everyone on the road well aware of my presence. Chances are I'll get carried away though and end up making it look like a ghost busters proton pack...

Go the xr6t as well- I have a lightly boosted bf auto. Awesome family car!
I love the 6 speeds, I would have rathered one than my 4 speed but the BF's had only just come out when I got mine and were heaps more expensive. Considering how they depreciate anyway I figured it wasn't worth the extra 30-50% they were fetching at the time. The 4 speed is a bit slow off the line but the long 1st gear is really ace for rapid acceleration where you often need it between 40 and 80s without any gear shifts.

And re filming ebikes via RC quad copter, this well known ebike shop in NYC is now doing it, but you've gotta wonder if someone sold advertising as the excuse to buy it...
Hey, advertising is how I sold the gopro purchase to my "finance manager" :p
I notice hobbyking has quadcopter kits now and I'm SO tempted to pull the trigger on one. I'm going to start dropping by the HK store near me and find some RC flyers who already have one and sus it out. Hopefully I can strap my gopro on one of those for a test ride. Ideally I need a good pilot who can tag me in a car on a quiet road at moderate speed and follow me around with the copter. That'd be ace. Alternatively even some relatively slow high up passing shots will look sweet too.

No bike riding today but there is a rather silver lining, I'm off top pick up my laced HS and HT 35 motors

haha.
If only I had the time to be out testing these motors :(
I only picked them up yesterday from glowworm, threw a tyre a tube on the HS last night but got called away by the baby crying before I could finish.
I've got crap on all day today and tomorrow but hopefully tonight I'll get it bolted up and maybe a quick midnight test ride. The only spare time I have to these days is after 10pm unfortunately.

I'll probably throw it on my DH bike, I don't want to have to mess with all the wires on my commuter (they're all different from the crystalyte). I havent made torque arms for it yet so hopefully the drops don't let go. I havent finished making the battery pack and mounts for that bike either so it sounds like another job for duct tape and inner tubes for now

Haha! Go with wire nuts! My first bike is still using the same ones on the battery! Probably over 1500 miles and its just like the day I put it together! Lol! Seriously though.......not recommended!

All my test rides have been conducted with crap held together with inner tubes. I much prefer inner tubes to duct tape. YBH8N ? :p

Exhibit A

innertube.jpg

I revved it up on the bench, audibly it was a little faster than my 9C 9x7.
I bolted it on and went for a quick test with the crystalyte 72v 40a 12 fet controller.
Suprisingly it had a bit of a judder to it on full throttle acceleration with a few split seconds here and there of a grunty sort of vibration, like you get with a crook hall but only a hint of it that passed. It's the same sort of thing I got from sensorless controllers at high voltage but this is sensored. Other than that it went pretty well. I didnt get to top speed as it was starting to rain and it was night time and I didnt have my gear on so didn't want to push my luck but even on 40 amps it went respectably. Once I bump that up to 80 and sort out this juddering issue I'll be in business.

Initial acceleration is very snappy off the line, I nearly plowed into my garage door giving it the same amount of throttle as I do to slowly move off on my 9C. I suspect this is more a controller / throttle issue though

I'm tempted to pull the wheel back off and swap the tube and tyre over onto the HT but it's late and I'm buggered so it'll have to wait for another day.

Oh, and I weighed the laced motor in to the large crystalyte 26" rim - a shade under 8.5kg.

It's interesting you say that Jay, as I recently lent my X5303 to a mate who put it on one of his bikes which has a 9C controller on it. When run on my Lyen 12 Fet it runs as smooth as butter, but he said (I haven't got to see it yet), that it ran really rough, and juddered up to 20km/hr, then ran really smooth. It was so juddery that he initially thought I had given him the wrong colour combos or that one of the halls was bad. We still have no explanation, because on his 12 Fet Lyen it is fine, but on his 9C it is rough at the start. What I found strange is they are both infenion's so I wouldn't have thought they would be different. I haven't seen it with my own eyes yet, but his description was identical to what you said....

Curious, I'd have expected some teething problems running other controllers on these things but I'd have thought their own controllers would be perfectly matched. I'll have a fiddle with the software settings (assuming I can progam it the same as other infineons) but I guess I'll never know what the stock settings were. It's almost like the timing isnt right, I've had similar symptoms with full throttle accelerate from low speeds with 120% speed

Have you given your HS35 a run yet Phil ?

Re trying the HS35, No not yet, it is still with my LBS getting laced up. Hope to get it back this week.

But I got my Greyborg built, which currently has my 9C 8x8 on it. Will try out the HS35 on it when I get that.

The Greyborg is insanely fun, here is a photo:

I can't explain how much fun this thing is. Particularly coming from the ghetto setup I had going previously, with 20S4P in a massive toolbox strapped to the back of a rigid frame Giant. I keep volunteering to duck down the shops just to have a go on it.

Nice ride! So you're going to run the HS35 on 20S as well ? Should scream!
Have you had any attention from the boys in blue riding it ?

Here's my latest vid. Nothing too exciting, just a bit of footage from a casual ride up to the shops to grab a few things. The last of the golden leaves from the liquid amber trees makes for some different and pretty ground cover. I was happy cruising along minding my own business, until I came across some prey

Not yet but I am very conscious of how much attention it attracts, looking so dirtbike like and weird, I mainly stick to bike paths so far.

But yesterday I smoked my 9C, so until my HS35 is laced (which should be this week), I am off the road.

Has your Hx35 issue been resolved yet? ie, the juddering? Also, is the colour combo (re halls/phases) for a Lyen the same as other Crystallites?

The 8x8 ? Bummer! And in winter too. How much current were you feeding it ? Melted phase wires you reckon or an actual winding ?

I haven't had a chance to play with the HS since the quick demo the other night, crazy family commitments yesterday.
Hopefully tonight I'll have another play with it. I was tempted to ride it to work today but I have no chain or derailuer on it yet and knowing murphys law something would go wrong and I'd be stuck pushing it 7.5ks to work or 7.5ks back home (it would of course break down half way and not close either one to do me any favours!)

Not sure on the wiring colour code, I haven't cut the supplied hall plug off yet to try other options. I'd definitely try the old xylte colour code first if you're experimenting. Let me know when you do do it because it'll save me the trial and error!

Yeah it was the 8x8

http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28786

I was only feeding it 20S/40amps, so about 3kw. But I was also towing two kids in a trailer, which wouldn't have helped. But it actually had smoke pouring out of the axles. The windings are baked, and the smell, oh the smell. My whole garage reeks....

I really didn't realise how careful you have to be with the 9C, as I used to do exactly the same thing (in summer) to my X5, no worries at all.

Do you have any motors for sale Mr Hyena? I have the HS35 but if I cook that I only have my X5 left, always like having some variety. You don't have any HT's for sale (or only the one you are going to gold plate and frame)?

multiple ass whooping  i was just waiting for the uzi sound effect

shit mate i dont know, thats a great vid if you ask me. great music, nice scenery, add in a bit of lycra wooping and youve got a winner. is that the hs or the ht your running?

It's actually a 9C 9x7.
Although, I think it might actually be a 7x9. It was the first sample motor I got from 9C ages ago and was originally laced in a 24" rim. I've just relaced it into a 26" rim and it feel a bit peppier than the one that just came off - unless it was old and tired ? It seems slightly thirstier on the current too which supports my suspicions... I'll have the HS up and running soon.

In the mean time, here's a few stats from this mornings commute.
Wouldn't want to push the motor much further than this. The case was hot to the touch but I was able to keep my hand on for a few seconds. In the past its been hotter, which makes me wonder what the winding temps were like at that point!

Coo

That thing gets mighty hot buddy? you need a bigger motor :p your wasting so much of your batts in heat, loved the Lycra attack video mate they must have wondered what the hell was going on

Hey philistine sorry to hear about the motor however can I just say your description of the smell really made me laugh (I am a bad man), the John Wayne gacys basement bit was in terribly bad taste but outrageously hilarious (the bad smell bit), your a funny guy with a very dark sense of humor   at least you can see the positives of your motors demise, good luck with the HS

Hey kids wanna play...jeez its no wonder kids dont like clowns is it?

Yeah getting a bit toasty. I'm hoping the HS35 will be my salvation. If that doesn't work I'm going to make a 2wd commuter and feed each motor 3000w  That's if I stick with the large DD motors. I'm happy with the power I get from that so I could probably get away with 2 slightly lighter and smaller mac/bmc geared motors

loved the Lycra attack video mate they must have wondered what the hell was going on
hehe yeah I they did get fairly well destroyed
I was polite about it though, I didn't do it infront of onlookers and the people keeping time or what ever that large group were standing around doing - I took a detour through the bush then headed them off down the back of the circuit. It's funny because they belt along the downhill section but when the grade changes to go back up hill they quickly drop like flies. I need to go down with my 360 degree spinning cam but considering it has a mind of its own I might end up taking some of them out

Thanks Knoxie. You have to be philosophical doing what we do. I like to think we are pioneer scientists in this field, and I put it all down to R&D. A mate of mine got into electric bikes shortly after me, and he always tells me how glad he is that he has gotten to learn from all my failures. I hate to think how much money I have blown working out what the hell I am doing. If my wife knew I would have to spend even more time in the garage, possibly sleeping in there.

Hyena you are going to love your Hx35. I have not soured on the 9C, its lightness really has merits, but the more time I reflect on my X5 I am just constantly amazed at the abuse I have thrown at it, and it never blinks. When you look at what Luke threw at his cock drilled Hx before failure, I will be very surprised if even you can melt yours.
