Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

What ?? :?
My demographic comment ?
One of my friends at work said to me "you're brave riding on the road through Hurstville, sooner or later one of the asian drivers will take you out" It's funny because he's Chinese  Sadly I do seem to have the most near misses there. Pedestrians too, I've had a few people step straight off the foot path without even looking and saw a lady the other day nearly get hit by a car when she strolled across 4 lanes of traffic, seemingly unconcerned that the lights had changed before she was half way across.

Hey Jay

Awesome video! love the skull mask was it a mask? or you just been on a diet  I love the ghost rider series (the guy on he Hyabusa that was just mental, taunting the cops then zooming off, just so good to watch)

Thanks for the post a great to see that you are still on the radar down there, your bike using Lipo? :? crikey your a brave man I have heard recently its really really dangerous have you heard that?

Love it!

he's to tuff to be scared of lipo. infact, he's the chuck norris of lipo users... this one time, at band camp, a lipo pack got puffy, but he gave it a roundhouse kick to the head, and it pooped out 500 a123 cells!

Oh yeah that guys is maniac for sure. I'd actually forgotten about those when I called it ghost rider, I was thinking more in the comic book / nick cage movie sense.

Nah mate all lipo is gone, I sold it an emo guy who actually wants to die and I'm putting all the money into buying hay for my new horse.

Speaking of being killed, I blew the SHIT out of a watt meter the other night. It was a RC power brand, identical to the turnigys or so I thought...
I had it all wired up to measure discharge as normal but wanted to quickly check the voltage of a new lipo pack I'd just built. On the turnigys this is no problem, it'll read voltage though the output just won't give you current (but these particular ones must have a diode in them or something.
When I connected up the pack the it instantly got red hot, melted the andersons then then went up in smoke.
When I pulled it apart I found this:

blown-wattmeter.jpg

That's the shunt sitting sideways across the pack of those pots and the IC. It got so hot it melted the solder off the blew it off the board

If people are nancies about lipo and want the weight penalty of lifepo4 then I'm happy for them. Until they're burning down houses once a month though I'll keep using them.
That said, while my dad is on holidays I might go move his bike out his spare bedroom into the garage

Thats some weird shit. Are you dead certain it wasn't damaged (ie. there wasn't a short between pos/neg on the double-sided board?) - I'd check this out if I were you.

Thats the only way it would have happened - the shunt is only a low-side (basically close to zero ohms) and passes straight through, ditto with the positive lead. Methinks that there was a manufacturing defect. No diodes no nothing else. I can give the dead 'un a good home if you like :)

Wow and I thought my blast from the piggies @ 160+ was fast! That guy is a maniac! But in my defense, I did have my soon to be wife on the back!!! Lol!! Never did get her back on that bike.... huh, wonder why?..

I can't be certain as I didnt test it before hand.
As I just posted over in the watt meter thread I suspect maybe that big blob of solder hanging over from the +ve side of the board was maybe shorted with the shunt or negative trace from the factory and when I plugged the lipo pack in it potentially shot 250 amps of current straight through it.

In other news my beloved meanwell charger finally said good bye after over a year of solid service. It'd been running rock solid often used twice a day and often left on for 12hrs after a charge and never batted an eyelid but yesterday when I returned home I plugged it in and found it only outputting 11 amps instead of its usual 18. I walked off and came back later to find it powered off with the battery only 3/4 charger and the charger dead.
You want that one too Heath, you like an mortician for my dead meanwells.
Fortunately I have 2 new ones sitting here waiting for their untamed current outputs to be harnessed

I can give the dead 'un a good home if you like :)
I was going to rob the screen from it but if you want it to disect it's yours :)

That's very keen, and dare I use another word for 'not sensible'

Looks just about like (but worse than) the WattsUp I was sent after it's original owner accidentally hooked the controller up backwards to the pack, thru the meter.

In my case, it was power flowing thru the shunt into the controller that heated the shunt up so much it melted the solder; the damage was limited because the controller's shunts evaporated, disconnecting the current path.

In your case, I don't know what the path was, but it certainly appears as if it was within the meter itself. It *looks* like one end of the shunt got hooked to pack + and one end to pack -.

Since there is no apparent vaporisation of traces or anything, that's the only power path that makes sense, as I'd've expected the PCB to catch fire as the copper traces all vaporized, if it were some other path. But right thru the shunt, there's so little trace involved between the wires and the shunt itself, because of the thick solder, that it could easily handle that for long enough for the solder to melt, vaporizing any flux or other contaminants still within the solder or under the shunt, blowing it out of position during the instantaneous violent outgassing.

Yep that will do it - there is no way that hooking these things up backwards would do it otherwise. Even reverse polarity would just cook the reg.

Yeah, I'm working on the boards for you, new job is taking up some of my time, I actually have to work now. I actually get paid now (as opposed to where I was pretending to work and them pretending to pay me)
I'm betting you snotted the highside transistors again :) They are always useful for parts, I'll sort you out for the postage.

If you don't mind, it would be useful for the screen for another CA clone, the large screen is good, but its a bit bulky for the DH bike - and I don't need to be tempted to look at a screen and hit (another) tree.

Well, AussieJester does call me highside Hyena. I'd much rather it be for blowing highside transistors than acrobatic excursions off the bike

OK no dramas, I'll add it to "Heath's box of Hyena's busted ass gear"

I just got a large screen one too but I'm hoping the larger characters mean I can glance at it less rather than looking longer to see what the figures are.
You collected a tree while looking at your CA ?? lol
I nearly clipped a parked car a few weeks ago while distracted by calculating some measurements in my head. And by calculating measurements, I mean the length of the girls short skirt I was looking at...

On a more serious note, I saw a dead guy this morning :| Guy in his late 50s, early 60s, flat on his back outside the train station, shirt ripped open, briefcase on the ground along side him, no sign of blood or trauma - heart attack on the way to work I'd say. 2 lots of ambos were there with a young trainee frantically doing chest compressions. The rest of the ambos were standing around and packing up their gear so I'd say he was long gone but the young girl wasn't ready to give up.

A sobering image first thing in the morning.

I thought about it over the next few minutes as I rode then somewhat inspired by this guys untimely demise, came up with a sweet idea for my an extended version / rehash of my ghost rider video :p

great video hyena. :) im off to watch a few ghost riders now.

I hear ya on that. Working as an a/c line mech (we'd do the quick checks on planes inbetween flights) we had a MALEV (Hungarian airline) land with medical emergency onboard. By the time the plane pulled up the lady was already past gone. Died of a heart attack or something, never did get the full details but it was def a natural death.

By the time they pulled her off the plane rigor mortis was setting in....pretty gruesome seeing that...First and only time i saw a corpse in person.

What i really felt bad was the person sitting next to her during the flight, that must have been tough.

I think people often die on planes and they don't realise until they land. If you're noticably dead mid flight I'm pretty sure they usually take the body up the back of the plane and put it in one of those seperate little fold out seats where the hosties normally sit. Human psychology is funny isn't it ? You'd sit next to someone on a plane and happily ignore them the whole flight and pretend they're not even there but if they're actually dead most alot of people freak out.
I cut up many a body at uni so that side of it doesn't bother me but seeing someone die practically in front of you does make you think.

Now, here's some other imagery for those who like "oldschool" silly lifepo4 battery technology :p

I always feel like an arms dealer when I open boxes of these things

I had an awesome ride home this arvo. My wife rang me just as I was about to leave work
Wife: "I left work early and am on my way home, I'm at the stop (2 mins or less) just before your work"
Hyena: "cool, I'm just about to leave now too, race you home!"

I quickly got changed and jumped on my bike.
I estimate she would have been at the train station down the road from my work by the time I actually got on my bike.
Then it was on, a topgear style race. Train vs Ebike
It was neck and neck all the way. I heard the train pull out as I wheeled my bike outside my office but didn't catch sight of it until I was 2/3rds of the way home. It wasn't until then that I knew who was actually in front. The train was faster but had to stop, I was slower and had to stop less but still had traffic. From then onwards we took turns at pulling in front of each, as I detoured away from the train line or got caught in traffic or as the train had to stop. The video is only from my bike perspective obviously but who will win ? It couldn't have been any closer if it was scripted for TV :D

Stay tuned, might take me a day to edit :)

interesting how a bit of competition really gets us going. That goal of possibly besting someone at something is always a great driving force.

I'm sure women would LOVE to find out how to turn washing dishes and doing chores can be turned into a competition.

Yeah, shut up. I've got a bad habit of focussing on things and ignoring everything else around me, comes with the AS unfortunatly (aspergers). Was thinking of doing some augmented reality with those glasses that project onto the lenses but I tend to destroy glasses as well on a regular basis. Getting the focal distance right is a pita. Closest I got to a decent working prototype was to use on of those rear vision mirrors that go on the helmet and use a miniature LCD that I had inverted all of the characters (using custom charactors generated by a PIC) in the line of sight. Still nearly crashed again.

Been having a ball riding home from work these days, there is a bike path that is deserted and pitch black at night, well, it is until I have both magicshine lights on full beam and belt along it at 50Kph :)

So I joined in on a lycra race today. I won. :p

I didn't realise it was a race until the "officials" expressed their displeasure at me being there

Talking about races...

Whatever happened to the Ebike vs Train race?

Ah I forgot about that. I edited it largely and was looking for music to finish it off but it got really late and I got busy the next day then forgot. I'll finish it off tonight or tomorrow and post it.

Yeah I definitely need a rear facing camera for that sorta stuff. It was a bit spontaneous though so the one angle would have to do. I guess if I was an ass I could have done several laps. Rear facing the 1st time to catch their reactions then forward facing for the next lap. hehe.

OK here's my train race vid. This one took me many hours to edit so I hope y'all like it. I was trying to think of a way to jazz up the one sided footage so added the google earth video to show both routes. It could have been a bit smoother but meh, it does the job.

Awesome!!

What a great video that was and yes I know just how much time that you must have spent editing that mate, been there done that many times, love the face mask as well thats too cool for school 8) must scare the shit out of folks when you race through some of those little lanes at night, jeez you need to film that  dont want to be giving you ideas for even better videos but that would be funny  and then maybe the next vid could be you versus the po po ha ha

Oh I have been using this on my android cell phone for tracking, its freaking brilliant and its free, you just start it running on your phone then you can email the link to your missus she can then see on a map in real time where you are and how fast you are going, a good and a bad idea I suppose! ha ha, it was great I used it yesterday on a 250 mile round trip to see Jozzer, my missus worries so much about me riding my motorbike she loved being able to keep track of me on the move and make sure I am not speeding ha ha as if I would

Oh the app is called real time gps tracker, I am sure that there are similar things on the iphone as well.
