Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

GEEZ! One box equals my whole pack! LOL!

Yeah Rix this is where I post all my vids, pics and ramblings. Sometimes more ramblings than vids but I usually get it back on track eventually

Glad I came across this forum. I laughed my butt off when I saw your video when you came across the jogger that wasn't wearing a very tight bra. Thumbs up to that was right. Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer my Lipo Q's. Not sure when I will be doing the conversion. Now I am wondering if I should go to a 24s 3p set up with the 5Ah Turn or the 5.8Ah Zips banks. The decisions that I am faced with. Anyway take it easy if you can.

What a terrible human being. Atleast he didn't have a camera recording

man you get yourself into some sticky situations! :p
haha it's unintentional but that seems to be how I roll!

If i have my way, we'll be the first people to ebike in the Cape
Too late mate, Maurice from glowworm bikes just rode all the way from the Cape to Sydney on an epic ebike adventure. You'll have to ride there from Perth if you want to top his effort!

Should I be the first to ask why you bought out HK? :p God bless you, you can never seem to stop buying stuff. That's what this hobby does to us, turns us into shoppaholics

Greetings from gloomy Budapest! I got called away urgently for work so apologies to those who have been emailing or PMing me. Ill reply fully when im back in a few days. After having sore feet from hours of walking around i decided i could stay away from bikes no longer so hired a pushy from a local joint. after riding one around here the old fashioned way even 500w would have been welcome! Interestingly i saw hundreds of people on bikes but not a single ebike.
One of keplers commuter boosters would be great for the convenience of powering up a cheap hired pushy in a foreign country like this. I think ill have to invest in one if I'mgoing to be doing more trips like this. Or maybe a little 20" folder with a high speed bpm or mac. I could only take a 12s 5ah pack on the plane but thats better than going "analogue" :p

I think Kepler's unit would be the ultimate attachment to rental bikes while traveling. Put it in with some lipos and a charger for checked baggage. Perfect. So far with my job, I have been driving around the pacific northwest and the Bomber has been with me the whole time. But if I have to start depending on rental bikes and flying, Keplers unit will be ordered for certain.

How is Hungary these days? Haven't been there since 02.

Just be aware you may need different seatpost mounts/clamps/spacers for different bikes with the eboost. I have one here that doesnt' fit either of two frames I wanted to use it on, as-is. I can easily fix that with stuff I have around here, I'm sure, but I just wanted to point out that because bike frames are not all the same, sometimes things don't fit like you'd expect. Plus, if the rental bike has fenders, you'd have to take the rear one off to use it.

I imagine it hasn't changed - since 1802 going by the look of the place
I'm not sure how poor the country is supposed to be but it looks like the plastic surgeons are keeping themselves busy  :p

Aaah, good points! And Murphy's Law dictates that what ever bike you went to borrow would no be suitable...
OK back to the folder plan :)
Maybe one of THESE classy looking things  (not!)

Only 3 hours away from Zagreb, go grab a cromotor.
Oh damn, I SHOULD have done that! Better use of my time than sight seeing and looking at countless old buildings for sure!
I actually had the option to go via hong kong instead of singapore and thought it'd be cool to check out some motor factories but they're so spread out and away from the main airports it would have made for a fairly massive journey for little return. Plus not speaking the language I'm sure I would have landed myself in trouble.

Nice to be back home though. Aside from the backlog of work... :|
New short video up tonight - some footage from my fighter I shot the day before I left.

Jay, I just checked the bike out. Rolls on large roller blade wheels. Probably peeks at 80-100 watts. Definately a "not"

haha I dont think any amount of power under that though would get me riding it in public!

Here's my new stealth fighter vid.
Short and sweet.
I'm going to head back out to this location (just found it last week) when I get my quadcopter going and try and do some chase and aerial shots

Yeah nice jumps to Hyena, hows the fighter handle?
Back heavy as you'd imagine, though not as much as a bomber. I don't know how guys jump those bloody things with 15kg of unsprung weight hanging off the back...
that power must be nice to help land back wheel first but almost horizontal (like a boss) :)
Yeah the extra power is nice, even when not completely leaving the ground (which is most of the time). I often find myself with the front wheel off the ground over bumps and undulations that aren't quite big enough to jump. Well, often they are big enough to jump but if you're not carrying enough speed you end up "dragging the bum" with the front in the air. Just yesterday I was riding a trail I haven't done in a while and was taking some uphill sections quite fast. Suddenly over crests of these hills there were sudden dips (intentionally placed in the fire trails for water run off) the first of which I kept the back down as I wasnt expecting it and just kinda rolled over but the following ones I gunned and launched right over them. The stock fighter doesn't have the mid-top end torque for sudden acceleration like this up hill (probably already doing stock fighter top speed when I gun it)

Still using the Gopro? Those"stills" look good enough for desktop material!!
Yep, new hero HD2. It takes better stills when actually used in still mode, those were just frame grabs from the video. Hard to take good shots when you ride alone but I'd like to take a mate out with my SLR one day to get some proper stills.
In the mean time I might make this one my new avatar :) (posted in the stealth thread last week)

Oh and in other news, I would have loved a 200w ebike this morning! On my commute to work I had a sudden hall or fet failure. Belting along I crossed an intersection then went to go up a footpath. Not a gutter, just a small bump but it was enough to cause violent stuttering when I tried to throttle. I guess either a hall jolted loose or something physically let go in the controller / wiring. Of course this happened right at the bottom of a big hill and for the next 5km of my trip to work I nearly died pedaling in the top 3 gears in my heavy, winter armoured jacket. urrggh.
This is the first failure I've had with this faithful old 9C motor and it's given me nearly 2 years of trouble free commuting at peaks of up to 5kw on a near daily basis.

Hyenanator,
Thats an awesome photo for your avatar. I am going to change mine sometime as well. Sorry to hear about the 9C. But, in all fairness, getting 2 years out of it with 5kw peaks tells me you got your money's worth. I don't know much about the 9c except that they are cheaper and not as durable as Clyte's HS and HT 35XX series. You mentioned it may be the controller. If you decide to fix the problem instead of replacing, can you post a pic of the repair.

Heh, funny you should say that, while day dreaming on the ride to work yesterday I came up with an idea for a scripted video with a terminator theme at the start and then just a badly behaving ebiker for the rest.

Thanks. I figured the silly one had been around long enough. Yours could do with an ebike specific one, if you hadn't explained what it was in the stealth thread I'd assume your av was of you sitting down eating dinner, which is faaaaairly obscure...

Yeah the trusty steed did well and it's ironic that a bump in a path took it out in the end considering all the abuse it has survived (basically all the videos I have on youtube on the blue bike are this motor) GCinDC goes through alot more motors than I do! The difference is these motors aren't available here in Australia so I have no way to replace it even if I want.

I don't know much about the 9c except that they are cheaper and not as durable as Clyte's HS and HT 35XX series.
9Cs were all the rage a few years back - they took alot of abuse and performed much the same as the old X5s but with alot less weight. As for durability, I'd say if anything they're more durable than the latest crystalyte offerings. I've had no issues with 9Cs before but multiple issues with crystalytes straight off the bat and up to very recently. (wiring cut issues, sudden hall failures, shorted windings that failed after 30 minutes of use etc)

You mentioned it may be the controller. If you decide to fix the problem instead of replacing, can you post a pic of the repair.
It's almost not worth repairing them these days for what they cost. If it's the fets (which it would be if it is the controller) they're a PITA to unsolder and replace when you've previously beefed up the traces. Not difficult just time consuming and I'm pretty time poor these days. I also have a few used controllers from previous builds and tests laying around so I may end up just using one of those for now and putting this one aside for a rainy day. I think it is more likely a hall though, the fact that it suddenly let go over a bump. Could be the solder heated up and started to flow and the jolt jarred it loose. Although it was pretty minor.
Meh, I'll get to it eventually. In the mean time I guess I'll reluctantly have to ride the fighter :p

Man you jinxed me with this post yesterday. A few hours later I got an email from gopro announcing the soon to be released hero3
It now does 1080p in 60 FPS but more impressively 120 FPS in 720P (what I normally shoot in) oooft!
It also does 30 FPS 12 megapixel stills which is very impressive and essentially full motion video at that very high res.
It also has a heap of other better features along with being smaller and lighter it also has a large flat front lens which will be better for underwater shooting (which I desperately try to avoid on my ebike  )
And just a few months after I bought hte hero 2. Urggh.
Nah I'm pretty happy with this one for now.
Sony also has a new action cam thats just been released called the HDRAS15 that also does 720p in 120FPS and has the great advantage of inbuilt image stabilisation. It also has wifi streaming back to a smart phone which is great for previewing or reviewing your angles and footage.
I think I'll have a tough decision ahead when this camera bites the dust

Sony got it right the first time with image stabilization! The comparison between Hero2 and Sony is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvfXWzmldYI
POV is nice in small doses but way overused these days. Now that both cameras offer 120fps I bet we'll start seeing a lot of slomo.. great

Yeah the stabilisation on the Sony looks good, the flimsy housing and mount options not so good. Condensation is usually an issue with waterproof housings but seems a real problem with the Sony. As the camera heats up, it gets worse. Think I might wait for GoPro 4 which will no doubt have image stabilisation too.

Sweet, I can't wait to see how it goes on real shakey action stuff like on our bikes.

I think any onboard footage gets tired quickly unless there's lots of action. Thats why I try to chop and change the angles alot in my vids. Unless there's explosions going off or you're mowing down people or similar any more than 2 minutes becomes a snoozefest IMO.

Sorry for the slow mo replays in my last vid :p
120fps is cool but for onboard footage there's limited times you'd actually need it - unless it's a crash or near miss or something. Most of the stuff that actually looks good in slow mo is 3rd person showing the actual bike or what ever you're shooting.

I haven't had a close look at the sony yet but the form factor alone seems to lend itself more to helmet mounting.
Do the gopros still have a heated battery in them ? I remember reading about it ages back as a method to attempt to combat condensation. I know mine can get hot but for normal use away from water it's a good way to reduce battery life...
I know a mate of mine that does surfing vids with his has those little water absorbing pads in the back of his case to keep it to a minimum.

Damn dude, that's pretty bad luck. Did you try to reconnect the hall sensor connector? That very same problem happened to me the other day.. minus the 5km uphill section  and I was half a block away from my house when the motor started juddering. Well in any case, let's hope its something easy to fix like an overlooked connector.
