Going for a ride to Qld, BRB

Too late mate, Maurice from glowworm bikes just rode all the way from the Cape to Sydney on an epic ebike adventure. You'll have to ride there from Perth if you want to top his effort! If i have my way, we'll be the first people to ebike in the Cape

Hyena said:Greetings from gloomy Budapest! I got called away urgently for work so apologies to those who have been emailing or PMing me. Ill reply fully when im back in a few days. After having sore feet from hours of walking around i decided i could stay away from bikes no longer so hired a pushy from a local joint. after riding one around here the old fashioned way even 500w would have been welcome! Interestingly i saw hundreds of people on bikes but not a single ebike.
One of keplers commuter boosters would be great for the convenience of powering up a cheap hired pushy in a foreign country like this. I think ill have to invest in one if I'mgoing to be doing more trips like this. Or maybe a little 20" folder with a high speed bpm or mac. I could only take a 12s 5ah pack on the plane but thats better than going "analogue"![]()
I imagine it hasn't changed - since 1802 going by the look of the place :lol:Rix said:How is Hungary these days? Haven't been there since 02.
amberwolf said:Just be aware you may need different seatpost mounts/clamps/spacers for different bikes with the eboost. I have one here that doesnt' fit either of two frames I wanted to use it on, as-is. I can easily fix that with stuff I have around here, I'm sure, but I just wanted to point out that because bike frames are not all the same, sometimes things don't fit like you'd expect. Plus, if the rental bike has fenders, you'd have to take the rear one off to use it.
Oh damn, I SHOULD have done that! Better use of my time than sight seeing and looking at countless old buildings for sure!Samd said:Only 3 hours away from Zagreb, go grab a cromotor.

Aaah, good points! And Murphy's Law dictates that what ever bike you went to borrow would no be suitable...
OK back to the folder plan Maybe one of THESE classy looking things (not!)

Back heavy as you'd imagine, though not as much as a bomber. I don't know how guys jump those bloody things with 15kg of unsprung weight hanging off the back...pendragon8000 said:Yeah nice jumps to Hyena, hows the fighter handle?
Yeah the extra power is nice, even when not completely leaving the ground (which is most of the time). I often find myself with the front wheel off the ground over bumps and undulations that aren't quite big enough to jump. Well, often they are big enough to jump but if you're not carrying enough speed you end up "dragging the bum" with the front in the air. Just yesterday I was riding a trail I haven't done in a while and was taking some uphill sections quite fast. Suddenly over crests of these hills there were sudden dips (intentionally placed in the fire trails for water run off) the first of which I kept the back down as I wasnt expecting it and just kinda rolled over but the following ones I gunned and launched right over them. The stock fighter doesn't have the mid-top end torque for sudden acceleration like this up hill (probably already doing stock fighter top speed when I gun it)that power must be nice to help land back wheel first but almost horizontal (like a boss)![]()
Yep, new hero HD2. It takes better stills when actually used in still mode, those were just frame grabs from the video. Hard to take good shots when you ride alone but I'd like to take a mate out with my SLR one day to get some proper stills.millzy555 said:Still using the Gopro? Those"stills" look good enough for desktop material!!
Heh, funny you should say that, while day dreaming on the ride to work yesterday I came up with an idea for a scripted video with a terminator theme at the start and then just a badly behaving ebiker for the rest.Rix said:Hyenanator,
Thanks. I figured the silly one had been around long enough. Yours could do with an ebike specific one, if you hadn't explained what it was in the stealth thread I'd assume your av was of you sitting down eating dinner, which is faaaaairly obscure... :lol:Thats an awesome photo for your avatar. I am going to change mine sometime as well.
Yeah the trusty steed did well and it's ironic that a bump in a path took it out in the end considering all the abuse it has survived (basically all the videos I have on youtube on the blue bike are this motor) GCinDC goes through alot more motors than I do! The difference is these motors aren't available here in Australia so I have no way to replace it even if I want.Sorry to hear about the 9C. But, in all fairness, getting 2 years out of it with 5kw peaks tells me you got your money's worth.
9Cs were all the rage a few years back - they took alot of abuse and performed much the same as the old X5s but with alot less weight. As for durability, I'd say if anything they're more durable than the latest crystalyte offerings. I've had no issues with 9Cs before but multiple issues with crystalytes straight off the bat and up to very recently. (wiring cut issues, sudden hall failures, shorted windings that failed after 30 minutes of use etc)I don't know much about the 9c except that they are cheaper and not as durable as Clyte's HS and HT 35XX series.
It's almost not worth repairing them these days for what they cost. If it's the fets (which it would be if it is the controller) they're a PITA to unsolder and replace when you've previously beefed up the traces. Not difficult just time consuming and I'm pretty time poor these days. I also have a few used controllers from previous builds and tests laying around so I may end up just using one of those for now and putting this one aside for a rainy day. I think it is more likely a hall though, the fact that it suddenly let go over a bump. Could be the solder heated up and started to flow and the jolt jarred it loose. Although it was pretty minor. You mentioned it may be the controller. If you decide to fix the problem instead of replacing, can you post a pic of the repair.
Man you jinxed me with this post yesterday. A few hours later I got an email from gopro announcing the soon to be released hero3millzy555 said:Still using the Gopro? Those"stills" look good enough for desktop material!!
Sony got it right the first time with image stabilization! The comparison between Hero2 and Sony is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvfXWzmldYIHyena said:Sony also has a new action cam thats just been released called the HDRAS15 that also does 720p in 120FPS and has the great advantage of inbuilt image stabilisation
Sweet, I can't wait to see how it goes on real shakey action stuff like on our bikes.full-throttle said:Sony got it right the first time with image stabilization! The comparison between Hero2 and Sony is here
I think any onboard footage gets tired quickly unless there's lots of action. Thats why I try to chop and change the angles alot in my vids. Unless there's explosions going off or you're mowing down people or similar any more than 2 minutes becomes a snoozefest IMO.POV is nice in small doses but way overused these days.
Sorry for the slow mo replays in my last vidNow that both cameras offer 120fps I bet we'll start seeing a lot of slomo.. great![]()
I haven't had a close look at the sony yet but the form factor alone seems to lend itself more to helmet mounting.remf said:Yeah the stabilisation on the Sony looks good, the flimsy housing and mount options not so good. Condensation is usually an issue with waterproof housings but seems a real problem with the Sony. As the camera heats up, it gets worse. Think I might wait for GoPro 4 which will no doubt have image stabilisation too.
Hyena said:Oh and in other news, I would have loved a 200w ebike this morning! On my commute to work I had a sudden hall or fet failure. Belting along I crossed an intersection then went to go up a footpath. Not a gutter, just a small bump but it was enough to cause violent stuttering when I tried to throttle. I guess either a hall jolted loose or something physically let go in the controller / wiring. Of course this happened right at the bottom of a big hill and for the next 5km of my trip to work I nearly died pedaling in the top 3 gears in my heavy, winter armoured jacket. urrggh.
This is the first failure I've had with this faithful old 9C motor and it's given me nearly 2 years of trouble free commuting at peaks of up to 5kw on a near daily basis.
