My personal best was two mothers, pushing baby buggies at a big intersection with traffic light. As I was approaching to make a right turn with a green light, they stepped off the curb directly into my path. All I ever saw was the back of thier heads, looking the way traffic was not coming from. I was in a car, so good thing I was looking, they were just strolling along oblivious to everything. Unbelievable. Oughta make kids go play in traffic, the way they did it when I was 6. Nowdays they don't walk anywhere till they move out of mommys house.

Yes been there done that!! I never ride on the tyre though, I would have pushed the bike home or got it to the road then called someone, I am too cheap to buy a new tyre :lol: however it would never happen as I always have 1 tube and a repair kit with loads of patches oh an a pump :lol: I have fixed punctures for others before out on a trail, folks really cant thank you enough when you say, hey no worries I have a pump and a repair kit, I will even do it for ya! I hope its this kind of good karma that may see me win the lotto some day, knowing my luck one of the days I stop to help someone they will mug me and knick my bike :lol:

Great video though and love the camera mount Jay its not spew inducing at all yes and love the annotation as well, more of us should start doing ebike video blogs, and sight seeing shit, to go alongside burnouts, jumps and cruises or Lycra racing, I have had lots of positive comments re the Lycra video from the guys that have seen it which is great!

(hey dingo) that kind of feeling sorry for old folks thing is all well and good but folks need to remember that they are also responsible for plenty of accidents when they are behind the wheel due to failing eyesight and other conditions, its such a hard thing for a family to tell mum or dad that they think they are too old to drive and destroy the last bit of independence that they have which leaves a lot of folks driving who really shouldn't be driving, you could say that for a lot of other age groups as well though

I normally have all of the above in a little saddle bag but I had the pump out the day before to pump up the pram tyres and spanner out to adjust my swivel mount right before riding off. When I arrived back home I saw it sitting there on the lid of the garbage bin where I'd left it. Doh. I have a range of other tools and wiring, connectors etc I normally carry in my back pack but I didn't take it as I thought the 360 degree view would look better showing my armour rather than a bag. I should have known Murphys law would strike!
And yeah I've been saved by someone with a patch once before when I got a flat and I was very grateful. It was the first time I'd used those self adhesive patches and promptly went out and bought some.

Too true. I nearly died every time I went in the car with my grandfather in his last year on the road. He had this attitude that young people should respect him on the road because he'd been driving so long! Even if he was the bloody king of England no one is going to know that as he pulled out in front of them! As you say it's not nice to see them lose their independance (wait until you see the electric mobility scooter I'm rocking in 50 years time ) but in the end we convinced him with a few "what if" scenarios involving children in cars or prams. And this was tough for a guy coming from a generation where driving home bind drunk was fine and it was your own silly fault if you ran into something or someone...

She crossed the road just after a bend without even looking. If I had on been on a motorbike or in a mack truck she wouldn't have seen me, and I wasn't speeding. Fast for a pushy, yes, but not for any other vehicle that would otherwise be coming around that bend.
Most people who stroll across the road towards oncoming traffic stop in the middle of the road if something is coming (I do this myself) but I don't look once when step off the gutter and assume nothing will come along in the mean time, especially on a bend.

She looked pretty fragile and I reckon a decent hit at speed would have broken most of the bones in her body - sure she ignored every rule in the book but in the end, pedestrians still have right of way.

Please don't think I'm standing on a soapbox here Jay - you know that I have behaved just as badly on my eBike (possibly worse) - but since splitting my Hadron in two, I've riding a 500cc motorbike almost every day for the last 6 months and there is something to be said for being conscious of the road rules the roadcraft involved in staying alive on 2 wheels. I watch the vids that you, GSinDC and others post with keen interest - but hope they don't turn into snuff films!

I posted the exact same thing when doctor bass posted his video doing 100km/hr on an ebike.
Worry for Greg and his family I actually ride quite safely on the road - I obey the road rules, don't jump reds or ride dangerously and am cautious around cars. I tear around offroad like I would on a dirt bike but hopefully that'll just end in soft tissue injuries and mildly broken bones. It's always worked that way in the past anyway... :lol:

This is tom from newcastle, I purchased a 48v battery pack and controller from you about 6 months ago. I finally finished my bike, it works well. In other news I took my wheel up to my new LBS - new as in I've recently moved to the area.

The older bloke that worked there didn't seem to be an ebike hater like other ebike shops I've been to so that's a good start.
I noticed he one one of the wolf / gette type ebikes in his shop (with a 2100 sticker price) but he said he wasnt going to stock them or probably any other ebikes as they're all too slow.

After truing the wheel he said it was the biggest heaviest hub he'd ever seen (obviously never seen an X5). He said he'd worked on the little postie ebikes but their 200w hubs were half the size and weight of my 9C. I said "oh it's a little more powerful than those" etc and told him about the performance and he says "yeah but it's still 200w though, so that's pretty good for the extra weight"
I said "ahhh, it's a bit over 200w this one, technically it's an 800w motor" and he says "no no, it's only 200w, look here *spins wheel around and points at 200w sticker* "
"oh, so it is" hehehe
I told him I had a 200w mode on my controller but could switch to a much more powerful offroad mode.
I'm going to bring my bike back to him once I fit it up and change his mind about slow ebikes

On an unrelated note, what sort of gear are you guys in colder climates running up in for winter commutes ? I don't want to spend hundreds on wankey brand name stuff, just something cheap that that does the job.
It doesn't ever snow here but the temp gets down to low single digits and the wind chill makes it much colder. The temperature has dropped rapidly lately and it was close to 0 degrees last night. *brrrrrrrrr*
I don't really it being such a problem last year but I don't think I was riding as much then through winter for some reason.
I'll need to invest in some winter riding gear if I'm going to keep this up. I guess wind-resistant pants with tight ankles would be a start, the cold wind cuts straight through cargos and they flap around in the breeze throwing cold air up my legs

but in all seriousness, ive got some old ski gear (from time spent in canada) that i plan on using on the wet/cold commutes to uni. just make sure you get some light weight stuff, with little or no lining (shells) made for spring skiing or you'll be way to hot.

ski pants have a inner stretchy part, usually for snow but itll keep wind out of your pants too.

Well, I've unlocked a new hardcore ebike achievement it seems and joined the likes of methods :lol:
I went to fit my newly laced and trued wheel to the bike just now and the brake rotor was just slightly rubbing on the frame. Curious, it just had enough clearance before...

After careful examination of the dropout and axle I found this!

I've cracked the weld on my axle and the whole hub it's floating back and forth on it!
Needless to say, this is a set back I can do without...
I guess I'll have to pull the stator back out and take it somewhere to get welded up. My nearest mate with a welder is an hour away so it'd probably be cheaper to pay someone locally a few bucks to give it a zap.

Bummer.
It shouldn't have been from the burnout so I guess it was all the hardcore shaking around from riding home on the flat tyre.
So that's a testament to the halls!

what sort of gear are you guys in colder climates running up in for winter commutes ?

My essential winter gear:
- Waterproof/breathable pants, run large (w/ velcro cuff). Used to be $25 :|
- Silk Long underwear, under work pants.
- Wool Sweater w/ shirt & jacket of course
- Balaclava - this one is great. another one always made googles/sunglasses steam up. can cover mouth or not.
- Good gloves. Still elude me... Though troy recommends battery powered ones, forget which...
