Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

haha what an asshole :p
Sorry mate, no mess of wires or duct tape! But yes, there's nothing mystical about my "portable" charger, it's just my usual one I throw in a bag

I'm making one with 2 meanwells soon for twice the power but I'm just waiting on some current limiter boards as the latest clones I bought don't do any current limiting, which means they draw 35 amps as soon as you put them across a lipo pack, then promptly blow up :(

This is my charger I've been using for about 18 months.
It's set at 6S voltage (25.1v) and dishes out 18 amps through the parallel harness I have set up.
With the watt meter built in I can see exactly how much juice it's put back into my pack, which is useful if I'm close to empty out on the road as it takes out alot of the guess work. This puts 6ah back into my 18S2P pack in an hour which is usually all I need to get home from where ever I am if I've used up the whole pack on a long ride. An hour is a bit of a long wait though if it's just a quick stop somewhere hence why I'm going to make one with double the power for a full recharge in around an hour.

Your just doing it since you saw my Meanwel 'Tower' when you were over hehe :p

nifty. what do the dials do? fine tune the voltage? do they shift during travel?
Yep and yep!
One dial is a fine voltage adjustment pot, the other is a "coarse" voltage adjustment and is actually just a switch that drops an extra resistor across the other pot to shift the voltage higher or lower. It gives me a good voltage range but also a fair bit of precision.
The big knobs (pulled off an old stereo) are a bit chunky so do tend to move a bit if carried around in a bag but it's easily adjusted.
I'm only just using it for my 6S based packs now (was using for a mix of 5S and 6S before) so I've hot glued the pot in place so I don't have to fiddle with it.

AJ, mine won't be held together with cable ties :p

Do you have temperature drift issue. When the ambient temp gets hot or cold. I know that turnigy watt meter is no good for setting the voltage. There can be a large gap. The one i had was 0.17v off .

I just recalibrated my meter because the temps are higher now especially in my garage cause the voltage to sit lower than normal. In the winter the voltage sit higher.

Where did you get the idea my 24v Meanwels (knock offs) are? not a cable tie in site princess, getting
a lil forgetful in your twilight years me thinkz :p ... I have my two 24v meanwels stacked and
held together with double sided tape, they power the Hyperion, 10amp bulk/balance charging babe'
....the other 48V Meanwel (original) job sits there so if i want to bulk charge with no balancing i have
the option, i guess you could call my 48v meanwel my 'portable' charger too :)

I haven't noticed alot but there havent been any temperate extremes here lately. I usually charge in my air conditioned office or garage and my garage is fairly neutral. It's starting to get colder now so I'll keep an eye on it but it's not an issue either way as the voltage is set conservatively, overcharging isnt an issue.

AJ - I must have been thinking about someone elses. Your charging brick is about as portable as you are :p

In other news, my clothes dryer blew up on the weekend. Pulling it apart I found the motor had gone but it wasn't worth the hassle of sourcing a replacement for the cost of a whole new machine this one was over 10 years old) Before scrapping it I pulled out the back mount that held the drum complete with little bearing and have decided to use it in a fashion amberwolf would proud of :p

This video gives an idea of what I'm working on with it :)
(excuse the horrendously messy garage)

Yeah, a 360 degree swivel gopro mount. I shall call it the Hyena-Matrix-spew-cam
My bench is covered in rubbish so it didnt spin freely but it would have if not for that.
The arm coming off the mount plate is the leg of an old tripod. I got a thin piece of aluminium bar today to use for the purpose but even that is a little heavy. The tripod leg is lighter (being thin hollow tube) and has the added benefit of being adjustable in length, so I can have a close up or one futher back to show more of my body. I used another tripod leg poking off 180 degrees in the other direction as a counter balance. The adjustable tripod leg in this case is brilliant as I can have it shorter with a weight on the end and then slide the leg in or out to move the weight further forward or back to exactly counter balance the camera (depending on how long the camera arm is extended out in front.

I'll need to get some bigger bolts as the little screws I used to test it pulled out of the soft Al tube with the amount of leverage the long length had.

It'll be a few weeks before I have enough time to build it up properly enough to ride with, but the prototype/proof of concept works :)

That's exactly where it's going mate, no one wants to see a 360 degree panorama of my messy workshop!

This is what I'm aiming for - hopefully minus the stack!!

HAHAHA... yeah right, not with your track record princess :p half a washing machine hanging off your head isn't
going to cause any issues i can think of Jay  ROFLMAO....i can see it now, the GoPRo gets caught
up on a passing cars roof rack and drags you along behind it... :: gets on knees:: "please god
let it happen, please... please.... pleeeeease...in HiDeF of course
" :p :p :p

haha you goof, the mount is about an inch high and smaller in diametre than a drink coaster. The biggest part is the arm that extends out. No getting around that. In that case, I look more like I half teh top half of a full sized RC heli on my head.

or this :p

Thinking about it today I was wondering if I wouldn't be better to use a small high torque slow turning motor rather than a free spinning bearing like I am.
From all the videos I've seen of others who make them the rotation is fairly uncontrollable. With a small motor the turning could be made as fast or slow as you like and it'd be smooth and precise. You'd only want 1 or 2 rotations at a time though otherwise it'd make you feel sick. Unless I have it set to turn very slowly so it takes a minute or so to do a full turn - in which case it'd give a nice smooth panning motion

I think your on the right track, lil lecky motor hooked to a switch would be just the ticket IN FACT! i know just the motor

They are on back order but for the sake of the project i can lend one of mine to try
along with a HV160 to control it, need a 6s pack or 2 too power it too? :p

Better make a small radius circle, or else ride only open paths, because you won't havea ny control over where in the circle it is when you pass that...WHAM....oops...signpost.

Oooooh Aaaaaamberwooolf why you have to go bring that to his attention :: sigh :: :p was counting
on him making it ~12 foot diameter sheesh, i gotta start PMing you more to keep you in da loop  :p

Yes, I've already nearly had my head ripped off once with a gopro helmet mount

Soo, take 2 in the garage tonight. The washing machine bearing was a bit flimsy I around around for what else I could find in my box o junk and what did I come up with ?

haha yeah that's a crank arm and pedal duct taped to my head
It might just work though with with a bit of of counter balancing and with it properly anchored to the top of my helmet. A proper helmet, not that POS.
I'm guessing I'd cut the end off the crank arm with teh threaded section and set it in epoxy over a bit area on the top of the helmet. Even just from that test there feels like a crazy amount of leverage from it though, although that's probably made alot worse by there being no counter balance.

You will need a full face helmet or a really tight chin strap
Yeah that helmet is a POS I just had laying around to test the concept. Thinking about it more today with a proper counter balance it will add minimal stress to the mount - it'll essentially be like a spinning top and if perfectly weighted there will be next to no stress on teh mount, or my neck for that matter. Just playing around last night with no counter balance push some huge strain on my neck.

here's another idea for your spare time, great for your backyard/ntl park jump track!
Did I leave the webcam running in my workshop ?!

That's EXACTLY what I've been working on tonight!
I'm going to try a basic version on the weekend with a piece of thin pvc pipe before going all out will pulleys though.

THIS ONE is even better

Look what I got in the post  still cant believe the great price I got this for, its brand new the ebay seller seems to have sold them all now and i am not surprised :D I also picked up the seatpost handlebar mount as well, its the time trial riders night out again tonight however I cant get out till its too late, ah well plenty of fun to come, hey Deec I hope that your missus was one of the other buyers

awesome zip mount.
Lucky bugger knoxie, im waiting just for a wee bit longer to see if mrs deec was one of the other buyers but i reckon not
i'll probably go with the basic cam and chest mount to start, but hyena has booted the bar way up, need some improv ;)

D

Yeah will try a quick blast in the morning if I remember  wont be doing many fancy mounts for a little while although the KMX is a great platform for them, chest harness is on my birthday list as well as a few other mounts and a little flight case to keep all the kit in, got to have a flight case

God dont these birthdays come around so quick its scary, thats why I am buying the gadgets now before I get too old to use em

hy and knoxie, you need to get the lcd bacpac next! no more mysteries. OR. set it up somewhere to see the view angle. r3 mode looks like 110-120 degrees to me, NOT 170 as i've read elsewhere...

Hi greg

What mode do you use for your videos as a general rule? I went on a detour to get to work this morning and shot 10 mins worth, it came out great super nice quality and very steady even mounted to the bars, will edit it up and post it later, nothing too amazing but a nice first test

Woot knoxie, glad it arrived ok. And then there were 3!
I use mode 3 - 60 fps 720p

Yeah Greg I'd love the lcd bakpac, tis on my list for down the track. For now I'm busy playing with different mounts.
And on that note:

I had some *cough* free time at work today so ventured down to engineering to use their gear.
I found some bits and pieces I could use, arguably better than a crank and pedal on the top of my helmet
Some rollers from some sort of trolley and some aluminium tube for the boom were grabbed for both my 'spew-cam' cam and hopefully my cable cam. I've jsut gotta cut a groove into the wheels for cable cam use. Either that or I'll chase up some proper pulleys. But they'd do at a pinch, and cost me nothing :p

wheels.jpg

On to my patented spew cam :p I drilled an 8mm hole in the top of my helmet for the mounting bolt on the swivel mechanism to anchor to my helmet. Under the hard fibreglass and what ever else the outer shell is made of there's a thick layer of styrofoam. I dug into that a little so the bolt didn't stick out into the inside of my helmet and in the end managed to get the bolt sitting just a few mm recessed into the foam section, so it'll never go near my head when I'm wearing the helmet. This pic doesnt show it very well but that's the countersunk hole including a hollowed out section for a big washer to distribute the force on the relatively soft styrofoam.

helmet hole.jpg

This is the end result. It has a lump of steel rod on the other end as a counter balance which I'll refine later but for now it's good to go.
It looks like it's mounted off to the back of the helmet but when the helmet is on your head it's pretty much right in the top middle. This is need to have the arm spin fairly freely otherwise it just falls backwards with gravity. As it was in my quick test it did tend to hang to the back so I'll have to play with the counter weight.

This picture shows my helmet with some of the other mounts I've been playing with too. The suction cap one on the side gives a similar angle to what Greg has been using lately but shows less of my face.

Test video from the spew cam up shortly :)
