Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

Thanks fellas, glad you liked it. Once I'm better I hope to add a few more shots to the extended best of compilation though I'm starting to run out of different and creative shots to use. I should have my dualie which will be better for offroading by then (going to retire the hard tail) and hopefully have my "hero bike" that I've been planning and working on for along time. I want to use the cable cam mount once perfected and also I want to get out with some mates to shoot some multiple bike footage and have the camera mounted on the back of their bikes looking back at me. Maybe some shots out hte back of a car too, although I want to try and keep to the offroad footage for the legalities of it. I had a short clip in that one with 2 mates on regular mtbs around the 1 minute mark but I'd like to add more. That was actually the day before I was diagnosed with the big C. The bike is still covered in mud in the garage and I probably should clean it but it's a reminder every time I walk past it of how I want to get back out. I took it for a sneaky spin up my street yesterday, blasted straight out of the driveway in 120% mode and nailed it up the street. I felt well balanced until I braked to turn around and got the wobbles and dizzy mid turn. Seemed my morphine filled brain wasn't up for the sudden turns and change in inertial force

I know I ask this on almost every vid you make... but... who's the music by?
This one is called reach for the sky by social distortion. I think this is the 3rd track of theirs I've used in my videos now.
A: I like them and B: they don't seem to be copyright nazis on their songs used in youtube vids.

Ice, thanks buddy. Hows the wrist going ?

hey mate I wanted to ask what kind of spokes your using in the hs/where you got em from? Cuase my lbs is having a hard time finding any spokes that'll fit.

awesome. stellar vid, Hy. i noticed, oh about 1:27ish how you got the whirly gig around just in time before slapping a bush... can believe you wore that on the trails... perhaps next time you can rig up a pole mount so we can see not only you riding but the whirly gig mount in action?

might be fun to see a clip from the bumpy flat tire ride.

nice work. i meant to do a highlight reel on my vaca but couldn't get to it. soon i hope. did tons of timelapses. can you do some of your sky sometime? world class sky down there... :p

best to the family,

g

sn0wchyld, mine came direct from crystalyte, so far so good although I only put 200m on teh wheel before the phase and hall wires got chewed up
I spend hours fixing it and took it for a quick test spin today but can't draw any conclusions yet.
The motors are drilled for 12ga spokes so you either need to use non-eyeletted rims or use thinner spokes with washers (or possibly redrill the hub, which is a slightly drastic option but it's what voicecoils/glow worm just did on one I believe.

Gotta take the camera to where the action is 8)

Yeah this one was intended to be more a fast paced action compilation rather than a year in review. Maybe later for the other stuff.

I tried to do one of the golden setting sun over the bush behind my place which looked impressive at the time but it didn't turn out because the camera auto adjusted the exposure as it got dark and just blew the sky out and made it look wrong. I'll do some more when I get time but want them to feature the bike too so I'll have to find somewhere I can set up for a while to do the timelapse bit then blast by. Which won't be for a while until I get better.

I did go for a little ride today and was less wobbly which is a good sign, though only on the road. I'm certainly not up to tackling rough and bumpy trails. Good progress though, especially only 3 days post chemo considering how sick I was last time. They've got me boosted up on more drugs this time around to try and avoid another lengthy hospital stay so hopefully this is a recurring theme and I can spend less time riding the porcelin bus and more time playing in the workshop :)

Update on that soon, made some good progress today on my new general purpose / commuter bike :)
The down side is I with my blunted senses I managed to put a drill through my finger tip, which hurt like buggery and bled everywhere. Ah well, I don't think I've pulled of any build in any state of mind without losing atleast a little skin :p

I know what you mean about drilling your finger  Was I surprised when it happened  I can't compare it to buggery though :) Take care of that wound. Great to hear you are riding again

haha 'hurt like buggery' is a commonly used Aussie slang term, it probably shouldn't be interpreted literally...

Frustration tonight in the workshop as I tried to get one of the new crystalyte 12 fet controllers to program. It originally came with the CA DP wires wrongly connected to a few of the USB programming points for the crystalyte APM or what ever they call it, but with it wired as it was neither the CA or USB plugs worked so it was useless. I've rewired the CA DP plug properly, beefed up the traces on the board added wiring for the 3 speed switch (which should have been there to start with but again crystalyte stuffed it up and added something else random instead) I can't seem to get it to program though, the software just doesn't recognise it. Bummer. If anyone has programmed one of these new 12 fet sensored crystalyte controllers let me know.

It still works but not being able to program the 3 speed switch and phase current shits me. I could solder the shunt and use the SL pad for atleast 2 speed modes but it's not ideal. Hopefully there's a solution otherwise I'll have to switch back to a modded lyen controller.

Anyway back to the bike.

This is the new battery pack I just build today, 18S2P zippy pack that JUST fits inside 100x65mm PVC down pipe.

I made 2 MDF end caps (unfortunately after searching high and low they don't sell PVC ones to suit) and wired all the balance taps to a single military connector.

Charging will be in parallel as I've always done and always had good results. With the main series connector to the controller unplugged the other side of the military connector will could put all 3 lots of balance taps into parallel for balancing - either either an external balancer / charger or with a 6 DC/DC converters set to 4.2v. I'm not sure if I'll go this way yet but I could charge at 6 amps though those pins. The red smudge is blood from where I drilled my finger  I'll probably paint that white to match the bike / box when I get around to it. I'll either put a kill switch or precharge resistor push button next to the military conector

And this is it on the new bike I'm building up as my replacement commuter and general purpose bike. The rear suspension only gives about 1-2" of travel with the stock cheap shock after tweeking but riding out of the driveway it's immediately apparent that it's softer than my hard tail. The front forks are basic 60mm travel steel units which will go straight on ebay for $10 (although I'm tempted to keep them and make a 2WD  ) The front tektro disc brakes aren't actually the worst I've ever felt but they'll get upgraded to 8" hydros. The matching mechanical brakes on the back are good enough to lock up the wheel which is all I need. I'm not going to go too mad on the forks, basic 100mm travel rock shox or similar will do. I found some cheap marzocchi DJ3s but I don't really want the added heft of 20mm bolt through front axles on this bike, my dedicated offroad bike will get the bomber triple clamps and beefier wheel set.

It'll paint the brackets and tidy up the wiring later once I sort out the controller. I was going to try and fit the battery inside the triangle but it was too much of a squeeze and with the rear suspension and looked a bit untidy. I figure once the brackets and convered up a bit it'll stick out less than a bulky enclosed triangle section.

Oh and Jay I caught this guys channel on youtube over the last couple of days, pretty amazing videos and right at the end you can link to the making of section where they show you how its all done, great fun to go through all of them as I did, this one is one of personal faves!! so if you get time you can pimp some of your old footage up or work on that sequel you were going to do with added special effects. :D

Oh man, working on e-bikes at 1.45am, posting compilations, creating e-bike alter egos, creating a e-bike tech. co....You're a hero Hyena, you're like.... Captain Hyenaman! Take it easy, bro.

Yeah knoxie I've been a big fan of Freddie Wongs videos for ages. He puts out the odd dodgy one but most are pretty cool. Now that he's getting much more recognition he's getting some serious actors and stunt men and stuff like that in his clips which only makes them better. I'll never have the time to sit down and do all the VFX stuff he and his team to but I like watching the behind the scenes stuff to look at their camera rigs and what not.

When I make my ghost rider short film I'm tossing up whether to end it with the ghost rider chasing a guy down and killing him with a simple gun shot (ie freddiew style) or more of a supernatural "force choke" type thing. Decisions decisions.

Hobbit, thanks mate. Why does everyone thing I'm Ebike Sarah ?? Bloody Aussie Jester!
I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude

Now, if we're honest Jay you are dainty but naughty petite & pruuurty and VERY lady like so it wouldn't
have been too big a stretch of the imagination

KiM

p.s nice editing mate, i dont have the patience myself.

How about a grenade launcher that shoots a lipo pack at him, which bursts into flames engulfing him until he vanishes like a vampire in dawn's sunlight?

Ha ha nice one Amber, I have played about with Adobe After Effects a little bit, its a great deal of fun but a little daunting for the newb video editor, I havent seen a pimped ebike video yet and reckon Jay could do it  so could I though, need to sit down and think of something, there are quite a few folks posting really good stuff online now with TV quality special effects being done out of a bedroom on laptops, pretty neat stuff, I edited my first video on a PC in 1995! crikey how things have changed.

Go with a gunshot Jay, easy to do and looks great, use a carrot as the gun though or something like that or your fingers as you have already done in your other videos, I love the gun stuff but always like the odd ball weapon approach like using cardboard guns and then adding smoke and flares to them, one thing some of these guys dont seem to do on their video is add in the bullet shells coming out of the side of the gun, easy to do?

Anyways its testament to your videos that they dont need special effects really as they are so freaking great already :) have a good week buddy :)

I thought they *had* added the shells ejecting in the above video, but I guess it is just debris falling on the right side of the screen about the middle of the vid.

I've pondered occasionally going back and making vids using some of the props and things I've made, like my GaussGun:

^^ gotta love you still wear a bum bag (think you yanks call em 'fanny packs?') with
all the camo gear AW What was the gun made for exactly? a prop for whom and what?
Ah, well, I had nothing else to use to carry my other stuff like keys and wallet and whatnot, as the pockets in the jacket and pants weren't secure enough (too loose) and I didnt' trust everyone that would be at that event.

The prop was just for me to use for the costume, just because I could. :) I'd built lots of little "ugly guns" out of various junk before, but never anything huge, so I took the opportunity. Danged heavy, though.

haha that'd be a different outcome :p
Actually I just found a 6S lipo pack in my wardrobe that had a DOA cell in in a while back. I used it while making a video for something in my office a few months ago and must have thrown it in the wardrobe one day while having a quick clean up.
I just tested it in the workshop and found it's gone from having a single DOA cell to every cell being >0.5v. Damn, time to dispose of that sick puppy.

Ack, AJ back with those dreaded photoshops. Completely by coicidence I came across this screen shot today that I sent him last year. hehe, swings and round abouts my friend

In build related news I was a bit crook today but pottered around in the workshop for a little while. Giving up on not being able to program the new crystalyte controllers for now I dug out the controller from my old norco dirt jumper (shunt not calibrated so not sure how much juice but probably about 80 amps) and took the new steed with the HS35 and 18S pack for a quick run. The "taller" winding means it hasn't quite got the sting down low of the 9x7 I'm used to running but it still pulled well and the extra top speed will be good when I dont have morphine in my veins to cloud my judgement and have enough road to open it up :p
Back to the workshop and the stock phase wires were quite hot. They'll get upgraded to 10ga just outside the axle and I've run some 8 gauge for the main power from the 45a andersons back to the controller. The andersons will be the weak link here but using the power responsibly in bursts as I've always done should see my steering fairly clear of trouble - I currently run 5kw bursts and the planned 7-8kw peaks with the new set up should be fine too.

Trap for young players though, I managed to melt and kill my main kill switch. I was grinding off the excessive bolt length I didn't need and the heat quickly melted the plastic and pulled the post out. Ah well, bummer, looks like I have an expensive spare key now.

"With great power comes great responsibility" - that's amazing restraint while on the morphine!
If it was anything like alcohol, you'd be like that guy who took his esky for a cruise in the middle of Noosa after emptying it of the amber =D

(don't mind the poms who call it a cooler box, they're probably busy eating crisps instead of chips and sweets instead of lollies ;)

No updates coz I've had a bit of a bad week but in the interest of posting cool videos I give you Ken Block's latest :)
Count how many go-pros you can see :p
