Nice one Jay. Will you build an 18650 pack for that? Could produce some epic range if you do...maybe similar to Sigmacom's 2.7Kwhr pack for his Bomber.

For 18650 you can easily fit a 300 cell pack. That's a straight slot in brick, more if you want to do battery tetris.
At 20S that's 15P and with 2.9ah cells like the 29E that's a whopping 43ah or over 3100whr. Mind you that'll cost a pretty penny a weigh a fair bit.
I think initially just to get me rolling as quickly as possible I'll stick with lipo for this one, but for anyone one else I put together kits for it'll be strictly 18650.

My crankset arrived today - shimano zee. Pretty nice, the most expensive crankset I've had on any of my bikes bar the schlumpf. One slight downside of the raptors wider 83mm bottom bracket is there's less options for cranks and BBs which means you're usually left with choosing between high end downhill stuff. Meh, tis the price of admission



Oh yeah, and then there's this pea shooter to stick under it's bum. Big knobbies for now as I've had interest from a few people in setting these up as dedicated e-dirt bikes so I want to trial how they perform before recommending them (or not) to others. For my own use I'll switch to shinkos




Forks should arrive tomorrow with any luck and then I have something rolling come the weekend. I do have some older marzocchi bombers (all black) which would probably look cool on it, and I was originally planning to use these, but I've decided to go with the DNM USD-8s as these are what I'll offer for others so it gives people a good indication of what their bike will potentially look and ride like. They sound like a pretty decent fork and are good bang for buck too.

Good to see the raptor coming along. I'm curious about the gear ratio, 38-17? That's getting down toward granny gear. But probably not low enough to pedal up a even a slight hill if LVC.

Postal tracking shows they're out for delivery today So pics will be up tomorrow but it'll be a while before I'm ready to put them through their paces. Still not sure what I'll do for the battery yet.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm tempted to grab another but I already have quite a similar front wheel here ready to go. The even bigger bargain in their clearance is the full face carbon fibre helmets for $99!

Ah, the age old dilemma.
The motor is the type that most here are calling the cro-motor, basically large chinese scooter/e-motorcycle hub motor adapted for use on bicycles. It's not actually the cromotor 'brand' but essentially the same thing. It's my own version and I've been experimenting with different windings, you can see an earlier less powerful version in a faster winding here:

I'm also planning a fairly unique new axle mod, but it will require some significant machining time, expense and big frame mods, so don't hold your breath for that one any time soon.

Out of the box as it stands it should have the similar performance as the cro but I'm looking to make a few further modifications to make it a stronger offroad performer.

34-16 actually. so yeah I'm not going to be pedalling along at high speed, it's basically a hill climb assist set up at this point. Let's be honest, I dont think I'm fooling anyone into thinking it's only my legs propelling this behemoth
I will look into fitting a larger chain ring though and see just how big a unit can clear the raptor frame. I think a sweet set up for this frame is actually the crown motor with a 7 speed freewheel and I may well revert to that later. I'm also toying with the idea of moving the motor over in the dropout and doing away with the standard disc mount and having some custom ones made up so I can use multispeed freewheels. I know Hal did this a few years back when he was playing with similar motors but I think he abandoned the project. Not sure why, I'll have to speak to him.

They do look that way from the photo but they're actually a thread in shimano zee bottom bracket.

I realised as I went to install it last night that I dont have the hollowtech tool to tighten it up so I have ordered one of those. It'll be well into next week before it arrives but I'll still be able to have a rolling chassis to show this weekend.

I would like to thank Jay for all the help over the past few months. His service is excellent and after riding his fighter I needed to have something similar in power. He sorted out a suitable kit with a crown motor and the older raptor frame for me. I only picked it up recently but its looking Iike it will be rolling sometime next week. I picked up a brand new runout giant glory for parts as I figured it would be easier than purchasing everything separately.

I will post up some picture's once its rolling and a few more when it's ready to ride.

Good stuff mate, I'm happy to help hook you up. Glad you found a donor, I dont suppose it happens to have the 83mm bottom bracket or 44mm headset you need ?
If you fit a new headset to the raptor you can put the 2 bikes side by side, loosen off the stem and remove the top triple clamp then swap the whole front end straight over. That'll save you a bit of time and effort!

I did a bit more work on the assembly of mine tonight. All the little fiddley bits are quite time consuming.
My new forks arrived, they look pretty slick so that's a bonus. This is them next to the forks on the other bike I've been riding alot lately , which I've found to be quite good.
Beefy! 8) I like the lower fork guards too and in white they match perfectly with the frame.

Yeah it has the 83mm Bb luckily.
The only parts I will need to purchase are the 44mm headset and the free wheel by the looks of it. I'm just waiting for the bike to show up at the shop as i had to order it in.
I received a few funny looks when I walked into the shop with the raptor frame.

The forks look nice. I may end up purchasing a set off you later on if I'm not happy with the donor's.

Maybe it's just cause I'm still 'relatively' new to all this and past mistakes mean I always measure twice cut once. 8)

That's a good question. Arguably I know what I'm doing when it comes to the electrics but the actual bike mechanic stuff is something I'm less familiar with. I've replaced every part of a bike before and am pretty confident doing most mechanical related stuff but there's always little differences and slight variations in new gear or different brands etc. And building a bike from scratch is a different ball game to replacing parts on an existing bike. The raptor is also all new to me (and everyone at this point) so a few little assembly things took me longer the first time around. eg I fitted some wrong bolts initially and I actually put the seat post sub frame on first which I should have done last to make getting the shock mount and shock on easier. Not impossible but just more time consuming doing up nuts etc in a more confined space. I was also taking a little longer than I might otherwise have done it as I was trying to document everything as I went, taking time to explain stuff and make sure I showed everything I was doing. Overall to get it to this stage there's probably about 5 hours work and that includes the above delays and routine stuff too like fitting tyres to rims etc. I've done it late at night the last 3 nights when the family has been in bed. It's the only way I can get stuff done without the missus bothering me or the kids running off with a parts or tools I have laid out on the floor! (I had to remove the turbo on my car a while back and looked around after having my head in the engine bay for half an hour to see my 3 year old playing with the intake manifold tubing in the sand pit!)
As you pointed out even things that seem simple end up taking ages and I've come to learn when quoting to do work for people to typically triple the time you think it'll actually take (eg what you think is a 20 minute job usually ends up taking an hour)

Damn, Jane is getting serous!!!, The build is tits up.....all the way!!! Neat. Touching on what Ken brought up, I think your 34 16 or 38 17 are probably the perfect ratios in you don't want to run multiple gear ratios or clusters (cog set). My Fighter is 34 16 in direct drive and I I think a 36 16 would be perfect for all around off-road riding assisted climbing. You could go to a 40 16 if using 180mm cranks, other wise go with what you planned. It will be perfect. Just so you know, I have referred a couple of guys to contact you via PM for plugn and play options on the Raptor. I bragged about how good your neutron kit was and had some pms about it. So expect some out of the ordinary PMs.

Yeah the 36/16 setup should be pretty sweet for general offroading. I can't use any longer cranks though, 170mm will be the longest as the BB height is already borderline too low at just shy of 13". I'm thinking I' might make an adaptor bracket to raise the shock up a little and give some more clearance. Or just source a longer shock.
I'm thinking the white grips idea was probably a bad one. I was trying to colour coordinate obviously but they already look grubby just from my wheeling it around for 5 minutes! I think I'll also ditch the standard style stem and go for something as 'stocky' as possible - basically as close to a direct mount stem as possible. They don't make a DNM direct mount stem and CNCing one would be a costly and ultimately poor value exercise. It would look slick though and I could design something that integrated headlights, controls, CA mounts etc. Damn it, now I'm talking myself back into it... SamD I have a 3d printer project for you! :lol:
I'm thinking I'll also ditch the standard bars in favour of the more moto looking wingbar style I had on my fighter. Someone said to me recently that those bars were part of the trademark look of my bike, which I hadn't given a great deal of thought to, but yeah I do kinda like em
