Hey all,

Newly arrived in Austin, TX. Found a job listing for bike mechanic at an ebike shop. Thought I'd give a cry out to the Austin E-Bike community. So what's up and scheduled for events? Anything this near the holidays?

ES member Chalo is a bike mechanic in Austin, there is at least one other Austin member but there name escapes me at the moment. Austin is probably my favourite US city.

Hey, yeah I am here in WARM AUSTIN TX! yeeehaaa!

I'm down with riding with anyone in the area. Just let me get my lipo hooked up and set to 40amps so I can make a good impression! (not that the lifepo4 sucks, it's just modest).

What ebike shop? I only know of Alien Scooters and Rmartin (which seems more like an online retailer). I actually applied at Alien, never heard back from them.

I've seen about 5 ebikes over the last 4 months. Not many at all, which is really suprising given the heat and PERFECT ebiking weather, very dry. It's a culture thing. Austin cycling culture is all about being either a fitness/sport roadie, or hippie/hipster who shuns any technology. I'm near UT. I actually just got in from joy-riding around Mueller. I like that area, nice smooth flat roads, wide and open. Tailed a motorcycle for a mile and got an interesting look from a cyclist in hipsterville. Dude, the cyclists here near good lights, so many idiots out in the dark like a ninja.

PM me!

Going to Austin for New Years eve this year.

LOL. What's wrong with that? I was out last new years here, walked all the way across downtown, saw some interesting things. Austin has one of the better downtown scenes in this country...... for drinking/music/fooling around.

Absolutely, nothing wrong with drinking, music and fooling around in Austin my ebike brother! That's exactly why I am going there! So now if I need bail money I know who to cal! Yippeee!
Seriously looking forward to it as I'm going to meet my good friend there from Maryland. We usually paint the town red when we hang out.... :D :D :D :D :D :D

As I said in the other thread Wineboyrider you will have a cracking time in Austin, such a fun city to party in. The way they have dedicated 5th street and 6th street to bars and entertainment is something all cities should do in my opinion.

Probably true. I always check with the service that the girls are non-smokers, I tell them it is because I can't handle the smell of smokers breath, as I find it easier than explaining I will have been huffing propane so hard that the room is a tinderbox....

My friend and I will probably call in a propane truck for the weekend. Austin can't be far from Hank Hill's house.

As we hot air balloon pilots always say. fun begins with propane and champange. I'd rather burn 40 gallons than huff it though.

For a real buzz, try laquering the doors and trim for an entire house. What month is it again?

You told me that story on the way to the Death Race!
Austin, TX here I come ready or not!

It’s been a while since I lived there, though I liked just about everything on 6th Street:

Waterloo Records @ 6th & Lamar (I bet this is long gone), Migas (a Texas breakfast meal), Texas Chili Parlor, Kerby Lane Café, Serrano’s, BB Rover’s, Amy’s Ice Cream, Town Lake et al, sunsets at the Oasis, Shiner Bock, more Shiner Bock, 100,000 college students within a 30 mile radius and the countless advantage of dating single women, some of the best music a person will ever hear in clubs, OMG BBQ, near as I can tell the friendliest (local) people I have ever met, and more pawn shops than you can shake a stick at. Take a note on the latter, I had THE hardest time trying to stay employed in Austin: Near as I can tell, it’s a closed-shop… meaning – if you ain’t from here, bugger off, although it might have changed some since 1991.

Hook'm Horns! KF

Waterloo Records is still there and seems busy. I was checking out the google street view in that area and it's funny how one frame will be totally different than the next at 5th/Lamar as one is 2007 and the other 2009. Lots of buildings went up around that time.

Town Lake and the trail around it adds so much to the city. It's really nice to take the ebike out on it late at night when no one is around. Check out the views from the south side looking at downtown. Another cool spot to check out is the Waller Creek trail between 6th and 10th street area. Lots of cool places in Austin. The scenery on 360 is great for biking on a sunny day, love those west hills.

The list goes on:
Mt Bonnell
Barton Springs
Pease Park
Shoal Creek
Capitol
Auditorem Shores
Zilker Park

They are redeveloping the Seaholm district, adding retail, library, and residences.

6th street is a circus some weekends. It's got everything for everyone. West 6th has gotten busy with nightlife as well. East 6th is very busy, for the less mainstream types. It's funny how the city changes from the east to the west side.

Article about a new ebike store in Austin:

I was asked to test drive one of the demos for a week at Rocket Electrics, this cool new bike store on east Riverside that opened quietly just before Christmas. As a way to introduce us to Austin’s first all electric bike store, owner Nicole Zinn and general manager John Dawson invited us to spend a week on a couple of Pedego electric bikes — see how they fit into our lifestyles as cycling enthusiasts with busy lives and a commitment to leaving the car in the driveway.

Full article in the link. Rocket Electrics doesn't seem to have a web site but are on Facebook:
