jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

Some video at the start of turn four would be cool. I have no way of knowing precisely how fast I'll be going, as the Cycle Analyst reed sensor seems to be struggling a bit. But the rate at which I approach turn seven should be a give away.

You could try a smart phone with Racechrono
http://www.racechrono.com/tracks/?lang=en&country=Australia&track=Wanneroo+1025m+Clockwise

I have tried it on Android and Symbian based phones with both internal and external gps's and the best part is the app is free. Here is an example of what you can do without too much effort:

Hi All,
Well the bike is no slouch now that the field weakening is sorted out! I had no difficulty getting over (what felt like) 200 km/h down the back straight at Wanneroo on my few short laps during the lunch break. It did however throw a couple of reset required faults, which after some head scratching I think I have sorted out now. Seems like the throttle input settings were too close that a bit of noise caused them to overshoot the setpoints. Regen was set to 25 Nm, or roughly 14 amps. Doesn't sounds like much, but that's still 10 kW of braking force. We can play with it a bit in future, hopefully Tuesday if we get the chance.
I also have a slow leak on the rear tyre, but we might be fitting a different hoop so while it's out we'll put a 90' valve on.

Just letting you know that the MCRCWA is hosting round three of the Weld West state roadracing championship at Wanneroo Raceway tomorrow. Mike and I will be there with Voltron Evo on display, and I will head out for a couple of laps during the lunch break. I have the field weakening and regen sorted now, so the bike should top out at 240 km/h with the present 17:38 gearing. While I can get the regen working around the streets of Perth, I really need a race track to test the >170 km/h performance... Unless you live in High Wycombe

Come on up from about 10 am, should be a great day of racing too.

I read this and thought I'd ride out there and saw lots of bikes but all made that all too familiar ice sound and not a wizzing noise, had a look at the pit lane bikes and couldn't see #89, well it was about 2.00, must have missed yous oh well, hope all went well and good luck in Qld

Yeah Mark we had probably just left by then. We were pitting with the 125 GP bikes and there is only so much 'ring-ding-ding' I can handle in a 60 minute period. We were only out for a few laps and they were ahead of schedule anyway. I think I was back in the pits by 12 pm.

and that stench, don't blame you, looking forward to seeing and hearing yours sometime

Voltron Evo has left Perth! She's all crated up and is on a truck to Brisbane. It's been bucketing down rain here in Perth of late, and the crate had to sit out in the rain all day before it got collected (the following day). Everything should be alright, albeit a bit damp.

I arrive in Brisbane on Monday night and will stay with my brother and his family. Can't wait to see my niece and meet my nephew for the first time! He's already 1. Tuesday I head up to Warwick to see the folks and on Thursday morning drive down with a trailer and pick up Mike and Danny. I'll get the crate and head straight out to Willowbank that evening. Many thanks to DarylMc for sorting us out with accommodation trackside - that's just awesome, and I'm looking forward to meeting you and Warren. We've still got lots to do on the bike - apparently the firmware isn't the most recent version, and that could explain why the discharge is taking so long. I doubt we'll have the resources to address it completely, but things like the isolating DCDC converter and the data logging can be set up then. We've also got some sticky slicks to collect from TopGun.

We now have 5 entries this year! Two Varley bikes, Catavolt and Ripperton in the mix. It's WA versus NSW; Kangaroo Paw against Warratah, sandgroper versus cockroach.

The pride of the west is bearing down on us!

good luck and more importantly have fun!

Northline have failed us again - the bike won't arrive for collection until Friday morning at the Pinkenba depot. So we're going to miss much of Friday practice. frock, why can't a race come to Perth for once!

Grrr

Hope to collect it tomorrow morning - might miss out on some practice tomorrow but we should have the bike by lunchtime. I hope!

Only an hour to track from depot (non toll road route TomTom). So if your up early and bikes in depot at opening time. U could make all sessions Chris. Going by the timetable. :D

I would love an update my friend! This I imagine this machine properly dialed-in can take track lap records.

Update from today. Voltron did not get out on the track today. After a late arrival in Brisbane where was some work to do that did not get completed.

Should be completed tonight for the first race tomorrow.

It should be noted that only one bike got onto the track today of the three that arrived today. They and two more should be running tomorrow.

Hi All,
Well the bike made it to the track by 10 am, but it got held up in electrical scrutineering. The bloody capacitor discharge rule held us back again. I swear they never checked it last year... Anyway, we ended up modifying the main PCB so that the discharge (NC side of the HV relay) went through a 2k2R resistor and everything seems to be working smoothly so far. Only got cleared at 6pm. So we missed ALL practice and now we have just 2 short races tomorrow - morning and in the evening.

Shame for Potz as he's missing out on the all important track time. Ironically the bike was performing beautifully until it went over the pits, where it spent the next 10 hours being worked on. I still think it's a dumb rule. Also the rule that the bike needs to have a red flashing light was tested, as the LED wasn't bright enough or big enough, nor visible from 30 m Away. I maintain that if the bike is upright, you can assume it's on, and if it's on its side, there's trouble. Don't need to see the light for that. Rules is rules. Finally the lanyard arrived in time to be installed, only to discover it's a switch to ground type, not an open circuit type. So that was a waste of money. Ended up bodging something up with spade connectors. Another dumb rule, but rules is rules.

But hey, we're ready to roll tomorrow morning when nobody is awake. Hopefully Jon gets the frock motored machine through scrutineering tomorrow too.Not many of us yet - Varley still haven't shown up yet.

What's racing without last minutes headaches eh?

Well done guy,no live feed that I can find.

Looks like Voltron was fastest in the first race! Ripperton very close behind.

The 3 bikes all completed the 4 laps, also good news.

Good luck in the afternoon race today!

I was there for the first 4 lap race.

Voltron EVO certainly had some speed on the straights and it looks like they have a lot of potential with the bike.
Knowing the efforts that went into building the bike and getting it to Queensland Raceway it was tense moments to watch the rear wheel lifting under brakes at turn 1.

Daniel Ripperton did a fine job of making a race of it on his R1.

I was in awe of the Catavolts wheel motor silence and it was certainly great to see the 3 bikes out on the track.

There was a good number of people who popped out just to see the electric bikes.

As far as I know they have another race at 3.29pm today.
