i thought you already have at least one you rescued from IT labor...

If he's a minion, he sucks at it. I have to beg him for parts. You don't have to beg your minions to do your bidding do you?

Am I likely to need a 219 masterlink and/or chain breaker?
On my current kit I moved the jackshaft etc around by 1 hole to the original mounting on the motor to have it fit more snugly against my frame, but my bottom motor brackets are pretty long too...

There are no 219 master links. Panther chain (Germany) makes special 'joining links' but they're just new links with the pins pushed out. I asked the kart racers and they say that breaking the 219 chains is no big deal. I've done enough now that I'm getting pretty comfortable with it myself. The fat side plates and hard, well finished roller pins make it pretty smooth.

If you buy a kit I presize the chain for you. If you buy the chain as a loose part you need to buy a chain breaker. I can supply one along with the chain if you want. I should have 10 here tomorrow.

Once the chain is sized you won't need a master link. You will have to take the upper sprocket guard off and loosen the lower tensioner (not the belt tensioner) but that's it.

i see that http://www.electricbike.com/mid-drive-kits/ have already updated their photos for the new kit :)

I have just finish reading all the post 8) You guys talk too much  I thought after the gng "official" post was all more or less said... But i have learnt new interesting things in this one. Thank you all for the info.

LR, it is a great pity i cant use your mounting brackets on my setup as its the best plug and play solution!
If possible i will like to contact you when you have less work to see if we can find a solution for a custom mounting brackets to put the reduction inside the frame and the motor outside.

I have a question i did not undertand very good when i read it.... I have the cyclone freewhell, is this posible to upgrade to use a 219 chain to the reduction? Or the product you are offering is a different thing?

Pd: LR my english i not good enought to explain how amazed i am with your kit! I love every part of it! Every part has loads and loads of hours of thinking with knowledge and investigation ... Making the combination of them to be a perfect kit. Nearly everything can be better, but you have set the bar realy realy hight!

sorry for a noob question, but are the #219 and #25 chains fairly equal in strength and performance with each other??

I found this info looking for some sprocket... It is not your exact same question but gives you a good idea on the diferences between the chains. http://www.tsracing.com/Techtips/TSchain.html

Hello,
I opened the GNG motor in order to replace the spindle to Mike’s version, can someone advise if the GNG motor bearing are from a good brand or worth replacement?
Thank you
Rotem

I used to try to keep the chatter to a minimum so that readers like yourself could find information. After getting scolded by a moderator I stopped trying. I'll be doing my first bike build thread with my kit soon. When I do I'll lead the thread off with a consolidation of as much useful information about the kit as possible. That way wherever the thread goes I'll have info pages at the beginning.

I'm happy to work out custom brackets for you or for anyone. It is challenging in some cases to do without the bike present but we can work it out with careful measurements and photos. It would be good for me to catch up with my existing commitments first.

I make #219 sprocket adapter plates for both the GNG 4 bolt freewheel BB and the Cyclone type 5 bolt freewheel BB. In the case of the GNG adapter plate there is only one driver chainwheel. In the case of the Cyclone you can have either one or two 104 BCD chainwheels.

Thank you for your kind comments about my work. I love working out mechanical problems. I can't say that my kit is perfect but I will certainly keep working on making it as good as I possibly can.

I've been talking to large American suppliers who can machine many of my parts in batches of 100. This is getting too big for two old guys to do in a couple of garages. I'll have my hands full doing design and development and checking everything as it goes out the door.

From their website
LightningRods
This new kit uses the same motor as the GNG. It also uses the same basic configuration, with a quiet belted primary reduction in the high-RPM half of the drive. plus, a narrow and strong chain in the lower-RPM half of the drive.
Although the motor is the same, every part of this drive is very strong and uses the highest quality components, including a 25mm wide 8mm pitch (instead of a 15mm wide 5mm pitch belt), and a #219 kart chain for the secondary, which is rated for 10-HP (7,500W).

Should that read 25mm wide 5mm pitch

I just good an idea, you could easily add a metal plate right in front of your Kit for properly mounting the Controller in vertical Position next to the Motor.

Sweet! Package from ebikes.ca waiting for me at post! (my first CA and a bunch of random stuff)

Phase 1 of conversion to LR kit has begun! (phase 1 = oggle all the stuff I got and imagine what I'm going to do with it when motor shows up)

I just saw the picture of the four new units on LR's bench - beautiful! I pulled the trigger last week, and am holding my breath until mine is ready. The blacked-out look is perfect for my Surly Black-Ops. There is nothing like this unit for the money anywhere I've looked. We should send beer to LR to help speed his efforts!

I'm not sure beer will speed the process but it will certainly make the evenings more pleasant. :D

I was able to get a bunch of old parts orders cleaned up this last week. Next week I'm going to ship as many complete kits as I can. The little suckers are very time consuming for me to get all detailed, painted and assembled. I have a whole new appreciation for mass production.

Mike, can you provide an eta on when customers can expect to get the units they have pre-paid for in their hands?

batch units 1-6

batch units 7-12

..etc,

I've come to view these "when will my kit ship?" questions as a bit of a trap. It forces me to make a guess and then if the date I've been forced to provide passes I'm jumped on as if I've intentionally lied. I'll say that I have two kits nearly ready to ship, hopefully Monday. If my machinist has followed through on his promises to me I will have 6 more motors from him ready to install, also on Monday. The remainder of the first six should go out over the course of next week. Another three should go out the beginning of the following week. With any luck by that time I'll have more motors and can finish the first 12 off.

Anyone who want a raw steel, unpainted, unassembled kit that needs to have holes tapped, needs alignment and final massaging can have theirs right away. In the very near future I think I'll have the current kit price be for exactly that level of completion. I'm charging nothing for the final painting and assembly work that I do. You're talking a couple of days of free labor per kit. I'll continue to provide the fully assembled and ready to run kits but they are going to cost more. I've been so eager to make this happen that I've done too much for free.

This project reminds me of movies about start up rock bands like "That Thing You Do". They're working on their songs, getting a few breaks, climbing the charts, and then the quarreling among the band members starts. One of my more sympathetic friends here on the Forum has observed that my efforts are like "herding cats". This kit is a team effort, produced by myself, my machinist Steve, my US parts suppliers, my laser cutting and forming shop, and the hardest part- Chinese motor suppliers. I deal with being sent damaged motors, the wrong motors, and vendors who say that they have 1,000 motors in stock and can't deliver 5 after you've paid them and waited two weeks for the motors to ship. The prices in China are irresistibly good, but you will pay in time and aggravation.

i'm in software development so i know about slipping dates, i won't hold you to your dates on the mark, as you are still "developing" your production line, what itches me is that i feel like i'm looking in an movie player that's loading a large file and i just see an hourglass without any nice animation of a progress bar, so i don't know for example if i should call lyen and invest in another controller for my bmc motor (apparently that's one of his favorite motors as well), so i could re-use the torque sensor, or bite the bullet some more.

you should definitely have the option to have the "raw kit" sent, after all, some (not me, i don't even know what's "tapping holes" means) might prefer to paint their kit this way
