Looking to find tapered square crank arms, but I can't seem to find cheap ones with 4 arm spider. It seems I got to choose crank set to get reasonable prices.
I will run single speed so I don't need 3 chainrings. In fact what I would prefer was single speed with wide narrow chainring. But those seems to cost an arm and a leg. I can get Shimano crankset with 3 chainrings for less then 50 $, should I just get one of those and drop the three chainrings for one new narrow wide?

Maybe I am not searching with the correct english terms when googling or maybe what I am looking for is called by something else.

Any pointers would be good.

If I get this one, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/no/en/fsa-metropolis-triple-crankset/rp-prod136947 could I just remove the big and the little chainring? And use the 36t?

am a zon
I recently bought a 48 tooth 150mm single chainring crankset for $30 from I forget the manufacturer, but it was sourced from Niagara Cycles, which handles the less expensive components.
I agree that it's silly that single chainring cranksets cost more than 2 or 3 chainring types.
I usually purchase crank arms with spiders so I can exchange the chainring as required (cheaper in the scheme of things)
I personally use shorter cranks than 150mm and it was less expensive to buy the tooling than really short arms. (drill bits and right/left threading taps -I have a drill press and the tooling squares to maintain alignment when drilling)
proper pilot drill size for the 9/16" x 20TPI thread is 33/64"

CRC has a Shimano Acera for $35; can't get too much cheaper than that. Just remove the two rings that you don't want.

You can get short square tapered crank arms from unicycle suppliers, but not with a four arm spider attached :?

You can get dinky cranks for child BMX racers made by Sinz and others, but they're intended for single ring use. If you don't pedal, what does it matter how many rings you have? On the other hand, if you do pedal, why would you want anything besides cranks that are appropriate for your leg length?

"Narrow-wide" is a cute idea, but at the bottom of it is only a desire to sell you a $15 chainring for $50. Go for it if you like that sort of thing. I know the industry wants you to do it.

I don't have any problems with my several single-ring bikes that have obsolete and hopeless normal chainrings.

Reason for short crank lengths are short legs plus I wish to have a little more ground clearance. I did find short crankset from China. Three rings as well.
I guess I drop two of those rings and see how it works out running it as single speed. I will take your word for it Chalo and don't worry about wide narrow chainring, after all the hanger in the rear should eat some chain growth.

pictures instead of words origin8 crankarms drilled shorter.jpgmodified cranks and 56t chainring.jpg
150mm Origin8 crank arms with spider modified much shorter

Found this today..... http://www.utahtrikes.com/PROD-498.html

It says the spider is both 104 and 64bcd which gives the impression that the chain rings are bolted on and removable , so you could remove just the outer ring an put a bash ring in its place. This is the only square taper crankset with a four spider which has shory crank arms. I am not sure if you are in the USA or not, but for the price it seems to tick all the boxes.
Andrew :D
