Not all air horns are created equal! I learned this in a not so good way now that the weather is turned cooler, I had run out of compressed air on my marine horn and bought a party horn from Kmart since that is what was nearby at the time, and it worked fine, in the warmer weather.

Now I go out when it's 29F and fortunately I didn't need the horn for an emergency, but I was a little ticked at a guy who didn't move over but a few inches as he passed me!

So I slammed the air horn and what I heard sounded more like a squeak toy!

Now I got my marine horn out again, and not only is it considerably louder, the gas in it's canister isn't affected by the cold, just as loud as ever!

Here is the Marine horn I use, should be available at any sporting goods store:

And here is the cheesy party horn I got at K-Mart:

Anyone tried out their Air Zounds horn in the cooler weather?

i had one of those cheap horns in the cold, they work if the blast nozzle is pointed opposite of the wind.but then you just blow yerself :? .

I wonder if they make a DC-DC convertor that can handle a big rig horn.. those run off 12v, yeah? ;)

Hehe I have seen a video of someone with that very set-up on falconev! I'd be afraid that they would be looking for the big truck and not see me still. :?

You know, with the big marine one, it didn't matter, pointing into the wind had no effect. Just don't bump it while you're in the garage by accident!

Blasts your ears out!

If someone complains about my light again I'll just give them a blast of my horn!

I had something like that happen with CrazyBike2 when i had the car horn on it; I honked at someone that was being dangerous to both me and themselves, and we were all that was on that part of the road. I could see them looking around (past me) for the source of the horn, and I had to honk again while they were looking to get the idea across, before they finally started driving a little saner.

Modern semi's are 12v. I have 4 batts in parallel. My air horn is angled down 45 degrees to bounce off the ground.

edit- when I blow it, they can't tell where the sound is coming from. I usually see their heads turn 360 like the exorcist. some people react instinctively, they pull away from my lane and almost go in the ditch.

You can buy a small 12V air-horn, doesn't have to be big-rig size. A friend of mine had one a few years ago on his motorcycle for the same reasons. He almost got hit a few times by texting teens. Its loudness was very impressive for such a small size.

I had an idea for a practical joke:

On the show I-Carly (my kids watch it) someone taped down the button (or trigger--I don't exactly remember) of an air horn, placed it in an elevator, and sent it to a different floor. The people on that other floor obviously got quite a surprise.

So it led me to this thought:

How about an air horn that uses a trigger (if they are available), and you place a rubber band on the trigger to hold it down (thus, making the noise). HOWEVER, place an ice cube, wrapped in a paper towel) under the trigger so that the rubber band cannot force the trigger down.

Place the air horn behind a plant in your friend's office.

When the ice cube melts and slips, the rubber band forces the trigger to pull, and all heck breaks loose.

Eh?
