My ping king charger's fan went out and I need a back up for my 36v 20ah ping pack. I know that ping recommends to charge at 5 amps, but I saw this meanwell http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Regulated-S...921?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b5febc09 power supply and was wondering if I adjusted the voltage (45-47volts I think) could I charge the ping pack with this? I am also considering using the power supply as an opportunity charger down the road and when I get my 12s lipo setup again. I was thinking of bypassing the bms and using the meanwell power supply as a way to get 7.3 amps while I am at the local coffee shop?????? 8) 8)

Have you tried oiling the fan yet? That meanwell is not a ton faster anyway.

I too am considering dumping chargers and going with a power supply because of price, modularity, and availability.

The only problem I can see with the meanwell is current. Can the signalab bms take 7 amps? Ping says no, but who really knows? We don't have the spec sheet for the signalab. You could build the current limiting board from tppacks, or get a smaller power supply.

The meanwell would actually work great for me since I'm not running a bms. At it's 56 volt high end each cell in a 16s pack will be charged to 3.5v, which according to charge curves is %95 capacity.

That's why I want to set the meanwell at 44.5 volts and charge it by bypassing the bms and then balance charge it with what's left of my ping charger?
I don't think tppacks sells the limiting boards anymore????
 :?:
@Dogman when your charging for 45 minutes at the coke machine it's 50% faster charging...

I got mine from Fetcher - it uses a single pot and adjusts very easily. I hope you're talking about attaching to the MW for current limiting, yes?

Yep.
This basically turns a meanwell into a smart charger right????
And then I could make my lipo packs 11s and charge both 12s lifepo4 and 11s lipo for a quick 8 ampish charge!
Is it in the for sale section? And do you have to build it yourself with a bom?

Good stuff. Hopefully it's cheap, easy, and available. Like my ex.

LOL! I wish wine were cheap and easy too, but it's not!

I'm going to search ebay etc. for some damn cheap and easy meanwells.

Perhaps what I was implying is that for opportunity charging, 10 amps is more like it. Not through the bms, but bypassing it. So maybe a power supply bigger than a 350 watt is what you want for a fast opportunity charge. I think if you stay under 7 amp of AC draw, you won't pop the breakers at the coke machine. Maybe a 500 watt switching power supply. That would put 3/4 of a charge in your ping in one hour.

While the 350 watt meanwell is fast, The 60 v output of a ping charger, if it really puts out 5 amps is 300 watts. Not too shabby. However, I failed to make the connection that your battery is 36v. So your ping charger is only putting out 225 watts. So in your case, a S350 meanwell would be singnificantly faster.

At the house, you'd need to use the hyperion charger to properly top up the ping, bypassing the bms, and using balance plugs you have added.

Personally, though, I find it easy enough to pack 100 mile range on my bike. But the cheaper frames do start to be a pain to ride when loaded that heavy. If I were you I'd just ride that honda to gordo, unless having a beer somewhere along the way. Meanwhile, find a good quality FS mountain bike for your permanent E bike. Or a longtail like a yuba mundo, or surly. Once you have the good frame, you can then pack on battery till you don't care about quick charging.

It's $$$, but I'm talking about a long term goal, not a solution for this week.

Yeah, it's only money..hehehe. As much money as I spent on the Death Race I could have bout 2 6s 8000mah zippy packs! Had a hell of lot of fun tho!

What do you think of this find?

Nice and compact, but I was looking for something with more punch. Can you use fechter's meanwell limiting board? It's nice and small though...

I'm using 2 of those 'stone' meanwell clones with fetcher's pcb and everything is working out fine.

Listen to dogman and bypass the BMC when using the meanwell. Then use your old set-up to balance charge every once in a while.
?

Yep. I can bypass it and then use a different connector so I don't f it up..
Nice meeting you at the death race! I had a lot of fun and hope you did too.

Thanks -
I'm also looking at this one http://www.ecrater.com/p/6126171/48v-dc-73a-3504w-regulated#
It's $50 but it's shipped from new york, and I won't have to wait for months while it comes from china.

That looks good! Shipping seems to be expensive on the clone ones from ebay anyways.....?
Dogman had bad luck with his clone....?

Where are ya'll ordering from? There are tons on ebay, but none offer a decent spec sheet. I'm trying to get a clone that goes up to 56v.

I got a 48v clome from the stoned dude. I was able to get it up to 59v after adding a zener and a resistor.
I'll see if I can find my notes on the stock voltage range. I don't remember now.
