This is a shockingly cheap lathe intended for motors! Any experience with something like this? I Wonder how big a motor it could cut

I have one very simular.
Its specificly designed for truing the comutator on a 540 sized brushed motor...so way too small for most of our applications.

says it cuts to .005 accuracy.
You can fit a 80mm cylinder in it so I guess an 80mm outrunner could be made if you have a stator.

HS,
are you shopping for a small lathe to make some parts with?
if so, I will steer you to a Brand name brand dealer who does better quality controll (i know-speculative :p ) but for sure ll the accesories will work & fit to the unit & replacmet parts & service is available.

even less expensive on sale...but the catch is shipping.
the claim to .005" acuracy is a broad generlization....because I have seen very close tollerance work done on very sketchy equipment.

but for building small ellectric motors & like parts....any of these bench top lathes will perform once you understand all the tricks & set ups that acurate work requires.

i would avoid Harbor freight for such items....I love harbor freight for lots of things...but close tolerance machinery is not on that list

thanks thud.
do you think I could cut the rotor and stator tube I have pictured below on this lathe? Can this lathe do mild steel? I don't know much about lathes and only used one a couple times but if I could cut this motor I'm in.
there's a bit of a back cut for the bearing seat and a wide threading...other than that I don't know what other obstacles this design might have to it's making.

everything is mm

3/4 horsepower seems pretty weak...maybe I would have to cut really slowly?

I think it's saying it can do a a 3inch cylinder in the chuck..so 76mm.
