A friend just bought a Pedillac pedicab. It has a Yongkang 500w hub motor with 48 volt SLA batteries. I rode it the other day and was shocked at the noise the motor makes. I have a Crystalyte 408 that is very quiet. Is this noise normal for a Yongkang motor or does my friend have a problem.

Thanks Dan, it is not a grinding noise. I have heard the term "cogging" used before. You can feel a vibration as well as the noise. I live in the boondocks of Idaho and I there aren't any other electric bikes around for me to compare as far as motor noise is concerned. Maybe most motors make some noise.

Most motors do make more noise than a 408. Often there is a grunting sort of sound under heavy load. A pedicab is likely always under heavy load. And it could be a chain or gear drive that would be as loud as a hammer drill.

Yep, grunting might be a good word. It is a brushless, direct drive, hub motor. Does anyone have any experience with Yongkang motors of this type.

Posting pics might help; often motors from one company are identical to those of another, and easily recognizable.

Some noise from motor systems is not from the motor itself, but from the controller's output being filtered by the motor, and a different controller design may make the motor sound much different.
