New Bafang Crank-Drives

If a 4-hole chainring is working well for you, you are not missing out on anything special...

Methinks some (no doubt unintended) big-wheel chauvanism happen' here! ;) If you intend running smaller wheels with the BBS then having a 5-arm crank (130mm BCD) is about the only way you can fit larger, easily available, non-custom-made chain rings.

My own experimentation suggests that, for the 250W/36V you need:
- 56T for 406/20" wheels
- 60T for 359/16" wheels.

For many who are looking for a small-wheeled bike that can actually be ridden fast (as opposed to simply acting as a scooter), keeping up with the motor speed (pedal assist or throttle) will be a major issue with the stock 46/48T rings. This seems to me to be an excellent reason for having a '5 arm' spider option!

Just sayin',

Savvas.

In the C961 menu I can see how to change from Kph to Mph, and set top speed, as well as clock time.
But I cannot see how to change the wheel diameter to suit the 20" bike.
Any tips, please?

Hi Everyone, I am a new user of BBS01 and new in this forum.

Tom L's error codes are not correct for BBS01
The error codes are generated by the display, the C961 code table can be seen here (page 16):

04 - Throttle not returning is zero state

The 350W BBS01 i bought from Greenbikekit only accepts the voltage corresponding to a 10S lipo ~33-40 Volts
I also have the 350W BBS01 from Greenbikekit and it works well for 41.6 V (max. voltage of my battery, Li-Ion Headway 36V 10Ah 26650 cells).

Here you can see my bike:

Hey that also tells me how to set the wheel size. Thanks Borsuk!!!

I have a friend with a semi disabled wife with a TerraTrike Tandem, IPS version [ http://www.terratrike.com/tandem.php ]. They love to ride but my friend is experiencing some issues with his knees and wants an electric assist.

I am thinking about mounting the BBS02 on the machine for them. It's almost 500 pounds for the tandem and two riders. My friend will pedal most of the time just wanting the assist for more strenuous riding. The passenger will assist some but not too much.

Do you think this unit is up to this kind of load? The tandem trike has lots of gears and my friend is a strong rider who will do the steering and powering - he is well versed using the gears and can watch the temp.

Most rides will be generally flat and slightly hilly (2-4% grades), but there are a few steeper grades.
What do you think?
I have a BBS02 on an Iron Horse, and was possibly going to put another on a Catrike Trail. The guy who does my builds reckons that with the amount of torque the BBs02 puts out, and the position at the end of a long boom, the twisting force could eventually make the boom snap. I am going with a vented DD hub instead.

Samd
I have to divulge that apart from building hill climbers for customers riding on road, i do not like these drives.
When offroad they are no match for the torque on tap when using a gear hub running 1.5 to 2kw. Nor should they be a match but i suspect people are seeking them for that purpose...

Hi Sam yeah it think your comments match many other peoples that the Bafang main weakness is that its not very powerful, it could be that the drive system also loses a lot of efficiency as it's a dual helical drive and not strait cut gears also.

If you read Samd, reply he says he is comparing them top 1.5 to 2kw hub and realises its not fair, Compare the 250w crank drive to a 250w hub and then see which is more fun especially off road :)

You will also need a 5 pin connector, like the one on the display (http://i.imgur.com/7DaWbi3.jpg)...Ideally we need to find a source of the 5 pin connectors. I've had no luck so far.
They look like DIN 45322 connectors available from http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Connector-DELTRON-DIN-5-Pin-60-240-Degree-Male-Line-Plug-610-0510-02139-/201051338500?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Audio_Cable_Terminations&hash=item2ecf97f704&_uhb=1 . As a further check the distance between pin centre's should be 7.0 mm. Complete DIN 45322 data at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector

Has anyone experienced an error code of 30 on a bbs02. It isn't listed. Everything still works, but the display is stuck showing the error code, just like when a speed sensor problem displays error code 21. Thanks.
Error code 30 is listed in C950 display specification:
http://www.greengobikes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/C950-LCD-display-specification.pdf

30 - communication has problem

Can anyone compare the bafang 750 watt to the bosch ?

The bosch is about 500 watts and 750 peak, but I find it very efficient, I've never felt it get warm or at least not the casing even after a 20-25% climb.

Does the bafang have a proper torque sensor yet ?

Just checking in again after 5 months, but does anyone make a 38T or similar chainring for the bafang crank drives? My girlfriend is getting tired of the stock 44T chainring on the BBS-01.

There seem to be several list members making adapters. Maybe do a thread search. Here's one making both 130bcd and 74: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=56770

Thanks borsuk. I found the same information in an earlier post by member anontrol. He determined the display unit had a problem since everything worked correctly when he substituted a second display unit he had. His display unit was a C961, the same unit I have.

I have since ordered a new display unit from www.greenbikekit.com and will deal with the defective unit if the replacement unit corrects the problem.

Has anyone had problems with the pedal crank kind of slipping when applying torque (pedalling) whilst the motor is running! I have done about 1000 miles on a 250W version paired with a road bike but I think the one way ratchet system or whatever is inside is beginning to fail! Seems a bit random at the minute as if one area/tooth/pawl or whatever is worn or weak as the pedal will drop suddenly about 2" at the point where you might be applying max. pressure, then sort of catch again. This is accompanied with a worrying 'clak-clak-clak- noise! Whole event lasts about a second each time. Not fully broken yet but could this be the start of something bad I wonder. To be honest the little gem is almost too good to be true so I am not surprised if it wears out quick.

I come across some recommendations here for Paul at em3ev.com for having good customer service. But exactly how good is his customer service? Is it worth paying 34% extra for? (em3ev - $550, BMSBattery - $409)
