New Bafang Crank-Drives

query for kepler if he's around or anyone in Oz who has bought from EM3ev.

My order from Paul will come to around $1200 AUD. Now, any goods imported that cost over $1000 is subject to GST and import duties in Australia.

Has anyone here had any experience of this in ordering gear??

Realised this and had an ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH moment.

you can not tell folks that short cage will work with a 36 tooth.

Here's the video of my bike's drivetrain.

11-36 cassette 9 speed cassette, 105 9 speed short cage derailleur. nothing janky about it and it shifts like it was meant to.

it doesn't always work - depends on the gear hanger - tends to be more chance with mountain bikes as they often have longer hangers. My wife's tourer definitely won't shift to 34t with a road 9-speed mech (works perfectly with deore mountain bike one) but my cyclocross goes to 32t with a 105 mech.
Cage length is different issue - my 1x10 hard tail MTB shifts to 40t (hope cog) with short cage (but chain length has to be just right).

Hopefully, it's like NZ Post - Customs etc: It's been pretty hit and miss as to whether i get charged. My BBS kit (no battery) got no GST charged, and ours in NZ$400 roughly or higher. I've even had masses of car parts arrive with no GST.

Basically, you'll have to pay it, or get the order sent in 2 lots, but the shipping will probably be more then???

Hi Guys,

I have the Bafang BB02 on my GT Force full suspension bike. It is fantastic.

My only constructive criticisms would be:

Provide two gears up front.
Provide a braking system for hydrolic brakes.
A better bottom bracket mechanism. With my 73MM BB I can only get one nut on.

Now, has anyone successfully installed two gears on the front? I want to install on a recumbent and I will have to ride often once the battery is dead. So the lower gears will help.

No dobt, the newer Shimano touring stuff is extremely adaptable to most anything you throw at it, but the rule can not be made for all rear setups with short cages. If you have it and don't care if it gets mangled, go for it. If your unsure and looking to buy new stuff, get something designed to or proven to work with the bigger cassettes regardless of the hanger.

Well there is always the questionablely dishonest way. Regardless what Paul actually charges you he can claim a different amount on the bill of lading. Your taxes are paid based on what "he" claims the charge is. And yes I have to say this has been offered to me by some vendors and I have done it. I'm just a bad boy  .

Bob

Real invoice is not at all relevant with a (good)vendor looking to promote trade and take care of the customer. It will probably have customs value of 29.95$ AUD. It would be a whole different story if your gov. was taking the funds and really trying to develop the workforce and industry to make the stuff at home instead of continuing to tighten up on ebikes use.

Arclarke:
Finally, does anyone recommend dropping power to the BBS01 350W ...

In summer I had opportunity to ride regular bike with 36V 350W motor. I made some videos of different assist levels and wrote a little about experience in Liberatorbike blog, take a look at this:
http://liberatorbike.blogspot.com/2014/07/bafang-8fun-bbs-36v-350w.html

I was very impressed by 350W motor performance on this bike and I’m waiting to try new Liberator with the same engine, hopefully next week.

I should add the 11-40 cassette is used with a MTB mech, and in fact I've just bought a "one-up" medium cage designed to work with 40-42t large cogs, as the downhill short cage mech was either too close to the big cog or too far from the smallest.

now THAT is a statement that is specific and can and does determine compatibility for the applications we are discussing. I built up an older fs titus with sram's new xx1 this year - the hanger length, be screw stop position, and relative position of the derailleur mount hole and drop out/axle center are clearly indicated in the specification/compatibility manual. the greater the axial/horizontal distance from the axle center the b screw stop is from recommended, the further the distance away the top derailleur pulley is from 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st speed cogs.

On the high speed side of the cog set, the "crispness of the shifting is compromised a bit. still works, but with less chain wrap, not quite as crisply.

Should also note that the sram 1x specific derailleurs movement across the cassette is different than other mechs.

Cheers,

Len

Every shipping invoice from every China supplier, I have seen, had been devalued. Not a particularly good subject for worldwide view. That being said do the AU authorities charge a tax and the shipping costs? Isn't a significant amount of that $1200 not the cost or value of the goods?

[ Isn't a significant amount of that $1200 not the cost or value of the goods? ]

Actually no. That's goods plus postage to Oz, in $AUD. Any taxes and duties applicable are on top of that.

Actually, the problem i have with this is not the tax, its the fee's, hassle and paperwork potentially involved in dealing with Customs for a one off import. :x

Will all work out in the end though and am looking forward to ordering this and getting it running. Spring weather here is great for riding, (and the wildflowers this year are fantastic) but with summer coming on i will have to be dealing with headwinds (Perth IS a windy place in summer!!) both directions on my commute. On a hot day, coming home from work up a hill into a 15 -20 knot sea-breeze is suspect i will very much appreciate the motor. :D

Hi guys,

I'm about to order the BBS02 750W 48V kit with battery from em3ev and but wanted to check that it would fit this bike as a base (before I buy the bike):

Giant Talon 27.5" 2 (pictured below)

The specs state:
Crankset FSA MegaExo, 24x32x44T
Bottom Bracket FSA MegaExo cartridge
full specs here:
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bikes/model/talon.27.5.2/14926/66836/#specifications

I'm partial to this bike as it is 30spd so it will leave me with 10 gears (11-36T) once the BBS02 is installed and it rides well. I would probably go with the 46T on the BBS02 rather than the 48T in standard kit form.
I would also try and use the hall sensor in the supplied brake levers to modify the hydraulic brakes as the motor cutoff.

The bike shop can swap out the knobbly MTB tyres for 40mm smoother commuting tyres which they already have in stock.

I'm assuming this will be compatible with the BBS02 750W kit?
thanks

It has a 68mm BB width and a good angle on the down tube. You should have no problems fitting it. You will have to customise the ebrake switches to work with the hydraulic breaks if you want to use them. There are details on a few methods in this topic.

EDIT: You'll probably need a few extra chain links too.

Every one I've fitted for customers I've fitted new chain, and sought out 6 or 7 speed donor bikes in order to take thicker chain.
Good advice Tom.

KMC make ebike chains in 9 and 10 speed: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/kmc-x10e-ept-ebike-10-speed-chain/rp-prod120625
I haven't tried them - has anyone else?

Advantage of more gears is more range - 36 tooth big sprocket, with 40/42 add-ons for 10 speed. (and btw I think 8 speed uses same chain as 6&7 speed, so is good alternative with better choice of ratios)

thanks for the heads up on the chain guys, I will look into it.

If you had a choice between the same bike with 24 spd (ie 8 speeds) 11-34T vs 30 spd (ie 10 speeds) 11-36T which would be be better suited for the BBS02 conversion?

By going for a 24 spd model in the same bike would mean a down grade in most other components as well such as fork, shifters, derailleur etc.

Get a 21 or 24 speed. 7-8 gears in the back is plenty. Or even a 3-speed igh would suffice if the gearing ratios work for you.

As you know, you'll be mainly paying for better forks and brakes. My wife's trek has about same spec of these as the model you're looking at and it's been great for trail riding. Personally I don't find Shimano 9 speed shifts as reliably as 8 speed or 10 speed - and I prefer 10 speed.

There is no import duty payable on bike parts. I've bought several items over $1000 such as you have and paid no duty!

Yes, that's exactly it. If I have to drop to 8spd or 9sp the specs drop off dramatically.

The 10spd has Rock Shox, Deore and SLX whereas the 8spd/9spd has Suntour, Tektro, Altus and Acera.

I'm much prefer the higher specced 10spd, I just wanted to make sure there were no downfalls, just upsides.
