Hello!

I am Patrik and live in Sweden. I am about to build my first eboard and I think I have all the componets I will need. I have already ordered my 90mm flywheels and now its time for my electronics. If you could please take a look and give me some input according to your knowledge I would be greatfull!

ESC: turnigy trackstar 200a http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__44999__Turnigy_TrackStar_1_5th_Scale_Sensorless_200amp_8s_Opto_Car_ESC_EU_Warehouse_.html

Motor: Turnigy sk3 245kv: http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18128__Turnigy_Aerodrive_SK3_6364_245kv_Brushless_Outrunner_Motor.html?strSearch=245kv

Lipos: 8s 8000mah (4s in series)

Drivekit: Aliendrive single motor http://www.aliendrivesystems.com/store/p98/_Single_Motor-6374_and_80mm-90mm_wheels.html

What I am really insecure about is the gear ratio. I have no idea what I should get. I live in a city where it is completly flat so I dont need alot of tourque, I prefere good topspeed. But then I have never ridden an electric board so I dont know how much is to much, but I want a board I can grow into. I dont want a ratio that will stress my esc and motor to the point that they will burn out..

I am 80kg naked :oops:
Please give me your input on my components and especially on the gear ratio. Thanks a lot!

Hey Patrik! Welcome to ES.

Your selections look pretty good. I'll give you my suggested edits.

ESC - i would go with VESC instead of the trackstar. About the same price and infinitely more adjustable (and built specifically for e-boards). If that isn't possible, i'd instead steer you towards a known ESC like the Mamba Monster XL2 which does 8s. I have one and it's OK, but to be fair i did not finish tweaking/adjusting settings before i got VESC and shelved it.

Motor looks good! For the flats i like a lower kv motor usually the 192 or 190 might be ones to consider for your weight (i'm about 120-125kg to compare).

Lipos - which? I'd want to make sure their C rating is sufficient. I'd try for about 100A continuous. So 8000mAh packs - roughly 15-25c with burst higher should work and give you plenty of headroom for battery life.

Drive kit / motor mount. I've tried all 3 - the ADS mounts, DIYes mounts, and Enertion mounts. My suggestion would be either the DIYes or Enertion. Pros and Cons are pretty straight forward - DIYes v1 mounts are super adjustable to a fault (can be fiddly and require a bit of time to get "just right"), but allow you to mount at any angle to clear drop deck or drop through etc. Enertion are beautiful, carbon fiber, less adjustable, but rock solid and easy to mount with no loose parts besides grub screws. The ADS i had which don't look to have changes, are just OK. They work but easily rotate and bash up the mount or your motor. You can fix it w/ glue, or loctite on the axle, or shrink wrap on the truck to better grab... No grub screws to prevent rotation iirc and my biggest frustration was catching the motor mount while moving on an uneven surface (luckily pretty slow for my flying get off i was able to avoid tumble).

Gear ratio - i like 14/15 motor gear, and 36 wheel gear. Good mix of low end torque and plenty of top speed on 8s!
14/36:
Code:
Diameter Motor KV Battery S/V M pully Hub pulley

90		245		8		14		36

Speed= KPH	51.729888
Speed= MPH	31.16258313
actual speed	26.17656983

15/36 would give you 28mph top speed - i'd gear for the lower 26mph.

Similar setup using the 190kv motor:
Code:
Diameter Motor KV Battery S/V M pully Hub pulley

90		190		8		15		36

Speed= KPH	42.98256
Speed= MPH	25.89310843
actual speed	21.75021108

What are you doing about charging? It's usually forgotten and overlooked, but important.

HTH - GL!

Thank you for your quick response sl33py!

About the ESC. Since i live in sweden I like to órder everything from one place to keep shipping cost down. So if there isnt a major problem with the trackstar I would rather go the easy way. That is also why I have choosen Alien drive systems, shipping cost. I have Paris trucks that i will be mounting to and as you said I have also wondered if it will fitt properly or just sliding around causing trouble. But if they are OK with some strong glue I think i will go for them. Worst case senario I could take them to a welder? They are good in terms of price and very low shipping compared to diy..

Lipos should be good and I already got a charger since my rc-days. But I have wondered how I solve the charging without having to remove the batteries from the enclosure every time. Any tips on that? http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__38301__ZIPPY_Flightmax_8000mAh_4S1P_30C_EU_Warehouse_.html

Your input on gearing was very helpful! Above 25mph is what Im looking for so 14/36 will be great!

You ride naked :? lol jk jokes :mrgreen:

That Trackstar seems to be an esc that will eventually burn out. Sl33py kind of answered all your questions :)
When I ride my board for the first time to check top speed I will :wink:

What esc is reliable than? The mamba? It will cost me 204$ with shipping from http://www.castlecreations.com/products/mamba_xl2.html

You know where to buy it elsewhere cheaper?

VESC, TorqueBoards 12S ESC, EzRun ESCs, HK 150A ESCs or similar car escs that are between 120A-150A.

If you don't mind learning how to program VESC is nice.
But it it negative that the trackstar is 200a? Wouldn't that make it more durable than say a 120a? I just want to understand why the trackstar is a bad choice compared to a HK 150a for example.

Vesc is the one enertion are selling right? First of all they are not in stock for a while and then I want something simple to setup.

There are multiple people who sell the VESC on the forum. Check the for sale NEW.

As for the 200A, I haven't personally tried it but I noticed many people ended up burning it out not only the 200A ESC is quite huge. I believe, the quality of the ESC is just lacking which is why it burns out eventually.

Agreed. I would recommend in the following order:

VESC (Jamesonotc, Chaka, Enertion, etc all sell them)
Torque's DIYes 12s ESC
XERUN/FVT *6s max*
Mamba XL2 *8s max*

I'd recommend a 12s setup since you can later change batteries for more power.

Personally I have had two of the trackstar 200a ESC's. One burnt out and one is still in use but every time I turn it on I have to do a throttle calibration. If your choosing between this one and the mamba xl2, I would go with the XL2. The brakes are not the best, though. For the same price or less I would agree with @sl33py on his reccomendations.

I *strongly* recommend you get something other than that 200A HK ESC. It's expensive for what you get and not known to be reliable. Remember that everything else aside, we are using RC car ESC's that are meant for a couple pound car, to haul our 150-250lb butts around! Components that work for the car will fail regardless of how many Amps it's marketed as handling.

VESC takes a bit of fiddling but once dialed in it works amazing! Has regen braking, can be configured to do sensored motors, and can set limits on RPMs if you want a speed limit from the ESC. Bit of a learning curve, but you have a whole community of folks who can help. If you get it from an individual here they might be willing to mark it as "gift" and set the value at a super low amount ($10?) instead of $120, which will save you on customs duties/taxes.

A plug and play alternative is Torque's 12s ESC. If you are trying to get all your items from one person, i would get the ESC and Motor mount kit from him as a bundle. You can even get your motors from him as he has some great longer shaft 50mm motors which can run sensored as well. 15mm belt width options if you are going to only run one motor too!

Again - the ESC isn't a good place to save $. Kinda important if you like your skin.

Or you could order a motor mount and vesc from Enertion because they have free shipping when you buy a motor mount.

Maybe I made a misstake but I ordered everything from hobbyking including the 200a esc a few days ago. If it works that's great, if it dies I will be sad.. Since I already have trucks and just bought flywheels for 100$, Aliendrive seems to be my best option. I'm really freaked out about the esc but since it's on it's way I have to do the best of it. A mamba xl2 would be to expensive with shipping and I'm not sure I get how the vesc works but I will do some reading to get my head around it. I feel like this hobby could be real bad for my wallet but I'm sure it's fun like hell!
