Proven causes of battery cycle life reduction

Was browsing around and saw this ES member Pajda post his crappy performance on overly high current charging of various cells, most notability the Samsung and Sanyo's performed the worst for his tests.

Also interestingly he shows that more 'resting time' between charging helped increase total discharge capacity performance..

Very interesting and similar results to my tests (from previous page):

The jump in capacity of Panasonic cell was also after some resting time.

So far it looks like LG copes the best with rapid charging. Of course that is for over-spec charging, but could also be true for different charging speeds within spec.

Also it is yet another sign that traditional cycling tests mean almost nothing, as I am sure the results would be completely different on different resting times, like at least 1 hour between cycles. But tendency is clear.

  • Samsung INR18650-25R are rated at
  • Standard .5C Charge and ~ Discharge
  • Max 1.6C Charge and 8C Discharge

These 3 tests demonstrate the effect of:
#1 Discharge rate
Black vs Blue = 1C Discharge vs 2C Discharge
#2 Charge rate
Blue vs Red - 1C Charge Rate vs 1.6C (max rated) Charge Rate

(Chart corrected to account for missing initial 40 cycles for blue and red!)
