recommendations for 35km/hr+ ebike kits shipped to Australia

Hey All,

This is my first post here, hope its in the right section..

I have a number of friends with goldenmotor hubmotor kits and am looking at getting an ebike kit myself, after browsing these forums it seems that the "9 Century" kit might be better quality and perhaps cheaper too?

I'm open to importing the gear to australia or buying it locally (if its the same price).. shipping seems quite pricey so im not sure the best way to go.

I'd also like lipo4 batteries and a switch to make it street legal would be awesome

My questions summarised:
1) is it better to buy locally or ship from overseas?
2) who is a good group to buy from? (website?)
3) goldenmotor vs 9century - which is better? are they both good enough? other manufacturers instead?
4) How do I make a 'street legal' switch? do most kits have this function?
5) the cheaper the better, but I may pay a bit more for quality..

Check Hyena industries. Not sure what he's got at the moment, but he has had motors for sale in AU in the past. He's a great guy, so send him your money. And don't miss his videos on you tube. Best there is, for cool pov camera mounts.

Looks like he has both 9c and golden kits. I recomend the 1200 watt 9c kit. Unless you live in a place they really enforce that 200w rule.

One option, though a bit more hassle than a switch, is having two controllers on the bike. ride 200w in town, and with a higher volt controller and battery, 1200 watts on trails.

thanks for the links and the suggestion, ive emailed that hyena guy but it seems a bit hard to get a hold of him... perhaps its better to order the 9 century kits direct from asia somewhere? suggestions?

Hyena also has (or had?) controllers that have a "link" that when connected (can be switched) limit the controller to 200W, and when disconnected are around 1300W @48V

Hyena gets some really good hub motors in- the new Crystalyte high speed and high torque motors were his latest import. I think he still has some HT ones left. Those HT motors will need quite a few volts to get 35km/h+- I'm sure someone can chime in but I'd be guessing 48+V?

The HS motor is a faster winding so would get the speed at 48V.

Also consider a geared motor- they're the ones with the freewheel (so less rolling resistance than direct drive like 9C and Crystalyte). Cellman sells them direct from Chinaland and they are pretty competitive on price (I've just bought one of them). He sells one which will do around 40km/h+ at 36V... I think the geared hub laced into a rim with throttle and controller was around $440 shipped by airmail so pretty good for what we can get here.

If you want to really push for speed later and lots of volts then a direct drive is probably the way to go, just finding the right one here in Oz can be tricky and they're exxy to ship due to their weight.

As far as a switch goes for legality- meh. The traffic cops won't know what to do with an electric bike anyway! I rode my (gasp) petrol powered pushie for a year between Bassendean and Midland at up to 60km/h and never got so much as a sideways look!

Ok, it obviously depends on what city / state you're in. I have had more than the occasional sideways look riding my standard 250W Aprilia and the other day some guy got busted here riding a petrol powered pushie (~50cc oiler) for not having the appropriate license Don't know if he got busted for no rego though.

Having the "legal mode" on a switch just may be handy (and that's how I intend to run)

you are very very correct. depends on which country. if they , the police intend to catch. SEe one ebike will catch one ebike. there was one time i run away from Police car. in my area there is alot of turn. The 2nd time, the police will stand by there 2am exactly there waiting for the bait to come up. sadly my country has already enforce this ebike laws, really very crazy laws. we all have no say. And this is very true. " Confiscated the ebike " , and the summon is now double. One uncle who sells fruits on his ebike was caught... finally he has to give up his ebike. another guy is a man who is handicapped use a throttle, also got his summon singapore dollars200.00 If they Wish, = it is very true, they can be very nasty.

not say NOt approve ebike can't be used on road. there are ways to run. Study the road suitations + pray peace ride two way.

im strongly considering getting a kit also and if i get one it will be the hydron IV, from hyena. ive been researching ebikes for a few weeks now online.

ive emailed him a few times from the email link on his page, not even saying i would buy a bike, just asking about them and he emailed me back every time the same day or next.

I've heard rumors 9 century kits are the shizzle. I can't find anyone selling them though :lol:

Shipping is unavoidable and you have to pay it regardless, you just have to factor it into the price. It's like stuff that sells for $1 on ebay with $100 shipping. If the same item costs you $200 here in the shops (or isn't available at all as is the case of these ebike kits) then you can't really complain.

As I said to drifta (or was it someone else I spoke to recently...) the motors are all much of a muchness at moderate power levels, the real power comes from the batteries and controllers that you power them with

Hey, cheers for all of that info, im looking at the 1000w kit rather than the 500w kit and i noticed on their website they have the limno2 and the lipo4 batteries... perhaps this has changed since you ordered from them? so at the end of the day is limno2 also not a bad choice? i mean 1000 cycles is still pretty impressive, and if its half the weight then it seems like a pretty good deal.


And yes Hyena has been very helpful and has replied to all of my private messages - good guy!.. im just in the process of exploring all the options before i make a decision as to who to purchase from... so far these are the options ive uncovered;

ali xpress kit or ebay kit plus ping battery (good price but untested results) ~$750 with shipping
chonismotor complete kit (good price, some people are pretty happy with them) a little more expensive than above, but similar
goldenmotor complete kit (more expensive, mixed opinions on goldenmotor quality) around the $1000 mark
hyena kit (more expensive, many people happy with them but only the 36v batteries are available) around the $1000 mark

For me the most likely option is going hadron mk IV kit. 72v, i just have to choose 10, 15 or 20 amps.. the price is quite different between all 3, i was quoted roughly $2000, $2500, $2900 respectivly (actually he said +500 +900, but the base kit is around $2000 i think)

From what I understand the amps will increase the acceleration, range and torque, but also the higher the amps the heavier the battery is.

I think I need to wait till I get my tax back before I can afford it also... Unless I get a loan which I dont really want to do.. but I really want this bike kind of now.. hehe

at the moment the cohnis motor kit is looking pretty good.. under $1000 for the kit with the 48v 20a lipo4 battery.. although i think thats about 12kgs.. the 15ah battery is like 8kgs, so im trying to decide on the battery size at the moment.. weight is important, not sure how much ill notice

15ah - 9.3kgs 43minutes
20ah - 12.9kgs 55minutes

so we are talking 4kgs difference and around $100 diff in price between the too with shipping


So far there support has been great.. much more responsive than goldenmotor! Golden motor never even replied to my email i sent weeks ago

im sure you will be happy with that kit from Hyena - its a bit out of my price range at this stage though!

Conhis motor is goldenmotor basically. The motors are good, the controllers are reasonable - I'd recommend the ecrazyman 48V600W unit if you like to fiddle with stuff (ie. higher current, regen etc). The batteries appear to be lithium cobalt, not sure if they are any better than the awful pouch ones he used to sell (Vpower style, with ITL pouches).

well originally i was set on the steath bomber, but thats au$9000. So $2000-$2500 suits me better, after i get my tax back.
